      • <i>Prunella vulgaris</i> Suppresses HG-Induced Vascular Inflammation via Nrf2/HO-1/eNOS Activation

        <P>Vascular inflammation is an important factor which can promote diabetic complications. In this study, the inhibitory effects of aqueous extract from <I>Prunella vulgaris</I> (APV) on high glucose (HG)-induced expression of cell adhesion molecules in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) are reported. APV decreased HG-induced expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and E-selectin. APV also dose-dependently inhibited HG-induced adhesion of HL-60 monocytic cells. APV suppressed p65 NF-κB activation in HG-treated cells. APV significantly inhibited the formation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). HG-stimulated HUVEC secreted gelatinases, however, APV inhibited it. APV induced Akt phosphorylation as well as activation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), eNOS, and nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), which may protect vascular inflammation caused by HG. In conclusion, APV exerts anti-inflammatory effect via inhibition of ROS/NF-κB pathway by inducing HO-1 and eNOS expression mediated by Nrf2, thereby suggesting that <I>Prunella vulgaris</I> may be a possible therapeutic approach to the inhibition of diabetic vascular diseases.</P>

      • Vascular Protective Role of Samul-Tang in HUVECs: Involvement of Nrf2/HO-1 and NO

        <P>Samul-Tang (Si-Wu-Tang, SMT), composed of four medicinal herbs, is a well-known herbal formula treating hematological disorder or gynecologic disease. However, vascular protective effects of SMT and its molecular mechanisms on the vascular endothelium, known as the central spot of vascular inflammatory process, are not reported. The aim of this study was to investigate vascular protective effects of SMT water extract in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Water extract of SMT was prepared and identified by HPLC-PDA analysis. Expression of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and translocation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-<I>κ</I>B) and nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) were determined by western blot. Nuclear localization of NF-<I>κ</I>B and Nrf2 was visualized by immunofluorescence and DNA binding activity of NF-<I>κ</I>B was measured. ROS production, HL-60 monocyte adhesion, and intracellular nitric oxide (NO) were also measured using a fluorescent indicator. SMT suppressed NF-<I>κ</I>B translocation and activation as well as expression of CAMs, monocyte adhesion, and ROS production induced by TNF-<I>α</I> in HUVECs. SMT treated HUVECs showed upregulation of HO-1 and NO which are responsible for vascular protective action. Our study suggests that SMT, a traditionally used herbal formula, protects the vascular endothelium from inflammation and might be used as a promising vascular protective drug.</P>

        광가입자 선로망 구성을 위한 설계모형 조사연구

        Due to the trend of evolution toward a broadband communication network with fiber-optics, the design and operation of fiber-optic network have been received a great deal of research attention recently. Furthermore, even a single fiber link failure in the network may result in severe service loss. Thus, the network survivability becomes an importantissue in planning and designing the network. This survey is on modelling of various fiber-optic subscriber loop network(FSLN) design problems, which are essential ones for providing broadband communication services and B-ISDN services, Models are classified and investigated as either conventional decomposition-iteration approach or integrated design method. To build survivable networks, SHR models are also suggested by ring control schemes. The result of this study will be effectively applied to build a design model for FSLN in the practical applications.

        나프타분해플랜트의 부탄추출공정에서 부탄증기의 연속누출에 의한 화재사고의 영향평가

        나프타분해플랜트의 부탄추출공정에서 부탄증기의 연속 누출에 의한 제트화재와 플래쉬화재의 사고결과에 대한 영향을 평가하고 사고결과에 미치는 공정변수들의 영향을 해석하였다. 877 kPa과 346.75K의 공정조건에서 부탄증기가 87.8 kg/s의 속도로 8m의 높이에서 연속누출되는 경우에 표준조건으로 설정한 대기 및 환경조건에서 사고결과를 해석한 결과, 제트화재에서는 화염의 형태와 크기를 예측할 수 있었으며 누출지점으로부터 200m에서 API모델로 산출한 목사열은 약 5kW/m^2이었고 플래쉬화재가 일어날 수 있는 연소범위는 11.2~120.2m이었다. 그리고 사고결과에 미치는 조업압력의 영향은 조업온도보다 크며 압력이 증가할수록 사고결과 값이 증가하였다. 이때 플래쉬화재에서 X_UFL에 미치는 공정압력의 영향은 X_LFL에서보다 약 1/10이하를 나타내었다. The consequence analysis for jet and flash fire accidents by the continuous release of butane vapor was performed and effects of process variables on consequences were analyzed in standard conditions. For the continuous release(87.8 kg/s) of butane vapor at 8 m elevated height in the debutanizing process of the naphtha cracking plant operating at 877 kPa, 346.75 K, we found that for the jet fire accident, shape and size of the flame could be predicted and thermal radiation estimated by API model at 200 m distance from release point was 1.5 kW/m^2, and that for the flash fire accident, effect range was 11.2~120.2m. Also, simulation results showed that effects of operating pressures on consequences were large than those of operating temperatures and results of accidents were increased with increasing operating pressures. At this time, effects of operating pressures on X_UFL. were smaller

      • 미세정맥개입이식에 대한 실험적 연구

        Microvenous grafts less than 1mm in dimameter are now used routinely to replace the arterial defects in replantation surgery an electively to gain pedicle length during free tissue transfers. It is often difficult during operations to determine the correct length of veinn graft required. Excessive graft tension narrows the lumen while tortuosity allows kinking, both of which are thought to decrease patency. This study was undertaken as follows, to examine the physiological and hitological properties of 60 rabbits‘ femoral vessels and the interposed vein grafts. 1. Femoral vessels were divided a distance 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0cm respectively, and the contracted length of vessels excised and the distance between the retracted vessel ends were measured. 2. Various lengths of femoral vein grafts were used to 1cm defects in the ipsilateral femoral artery in attempt to determine the correct length of vein graft and to estimate its patency rate. 3. Histological examinations and scanning electrion microscopic studies of the interpositional vein grafts were combined to see their morphological changes. Results obtained were as follows. 1. Harvested venous segments were found to contracted more than arteial segments, shortening by about 35-50% of their in vivo length, but excised arterial segments contracted by approximately 35% of their vivo length. 2. The retraction of divided venous and arterial ends is approximately the same. 3. When a 2.0cm vein graft was used to bridge the 1.0cm arterial defect, patency improved to 100%. Long redundant grafts were initially tortuous and dilated, but lost their redundancy and dilatation when studied 4 weeks later. 4. Histologically, arterialized vein grafts thickened by accumulation of fibrous tissue in the medial layer and intimal proliferation. 5. Scanning eletron microscopic studies showed endothelial changes in vien grafts arterialization; The vien graft endothelium was arranged in longitudinal folds resembling those seen in normal arteries. Conclusively, when a 1.0cm arterial gap was bridged with the 2.0cm interpositional vein graft, patency improved to 100%. As the length of the arterial defect increased more than 3.0cm in length, the ideal interpositional microvenous grafts should be approximately 35% longer than the arterial defect to permit optimal balance between linear and radial deforming forces.

      • 栽培中 Tomato 果實의 窒酸鹽 및 亞窒酸鹽과 Ascorbic acid의 含量變化

        This experiment was carried cut to investigate the relationship between nitrite and ascorbic acid contents in two kinds of tomato fruits namely, Bokwang, Suekwang, which were different distinguished in growth periods during culture. The results obtained were as follows. The nitrate content in two kinds of tomato fruits was relatively higher in Bokwang than Suekwang. It indicated high content as 5.8-12.5 ppm in flesh and 0.3-2.5 ppm in gelatinous pulp. In the beginning of growth period, nitrate content in flesh was 50-62.5ppm, and in the latter period was 21.3-38.4ppm. In the case of gelatinous pulp, it was decreased from 14.0-16.2ppm in the beginnig period to 9.3-10.7ppm in the latter period. In the case of nitite, there was no difference between two varieties. Nitrite content during growth increased from 0.15ppm to 0.21ppm in flesh and from 0.06ppm to 0.1ppm in gelatinous pulp. There was no difference between two varieties during growth in total ascorbic acid content and its concentration was 24.2-27.5mg in gelatinous pulp and was 13.8-18.6mg in flesh. The difference between two parts was about 10mg. In the changes of nitrate and nitrite content in tomato fruits, nitrate was decreased, whereas nitrite content was increased. In the changes of nitrate and ascorbic acid content in tomato fruits, nitrate content was decreased but that of ascorbic acid was increased slightly. In the changes of nitrite and ascorbic acid content in tomato fruits, nitrite content was increased and that of ascorbic acid was slightly increased too.

        국산 DAF 펌프의 기포특성

        The paper introduces a domestic pump designed for dissolved air flotation (DAF). In the paper, the difference in performance between the domestic DAF pump and conventional pressure saturator is explained using the characteristics of air bubble released. The size distribution of air bubbles released from DAF pump is measured by image analyzer and particle size analyzer. And the mean diameter of bubbles is 43μm. The results are similar to that of pressure saturator. The air volume concentration in the water of domestic DAF pump and pressure saturator are 40 and 70% of theoretical amounts. In DAF system used domestic DAF pump, the removal efficiency of turbidity is 70%.

        전과자들의 사회적 차별에 관한 경험연구

        본 연구에서는 출소경험을 가진 교도소 수용자들을 대상으로 가장 최근에 했던 출소시의 경험과, 출소자가 사회에 나가서 경험하는 다양한 차별적 상황들을 찾아내고자 하였고, 출소경험을 가진 자들의 전반적인 인식을 측정하는데 초점을 두고 조사가 진행되었다. 그 결과를 요약해 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 출소직후 경험하는 상황에 대한 파악을 위해 출소 후 처음 만나는 사람이 누구인지, 그리고 그 사람의 반응이 어떠했는지, 그리고 출소 후 가장 힘든 기간이 얼마동안인지, 또 출소 후 어떤 문제가 가장 어려운 문제라고 생각하는 지 등을 질문 하였다. 둘째, 출소 당시 가졌던 직업의 종류와 취업경로, 고용형태, 취업기간 등에 대한 질문을 통해 범죄자들의 구직과정과 취업형태를 파악해 보고자 하였다. 셋째, 전과사실의 인지여부와 그로 인한 동료관계의 변화에 관한 질문에서는 60%가까운 비율의 응답자가 취업시 전과사실이 노출되지 않았다고 응답하였다. 결론적으로 보면 수용자들의 과거 출소당시의 경험을 통해 전과자가 경험하는 사회적 차별의 실태를 파악하고자 했으나 응답결과를 통해서는 차별의 실체가 확연히 드러나지 않았고 다만 차별의 실체가 들어나지 않는 이유정도가 파악되었다고 볼 수 있다. This study aimed to investigate into the most recent experiences when released among prison inmates who had been released from prison to characterize several discriminative situations encountered when they return to the society, focusing on determining their overall recognition. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, to identify the situations they experience shortly after released from prison, the following questions were given to them:whom did meet with them for the first time after released?; how did the persons meeting with them react to them?; how long had they have the most rough time since they were released from prison?; and what did they think the most severe challenge was after released was given to them? Second, to characterize the job-hunting course and employment types of ex-convicts, the kinds of occupations, the types of employment and employment period they experienced shortly after releasing from prison were asked. Finally, for the questions about whether their previous convictions were recognized and the resulting changes in relationship with their colleagues, almost 60% of respondents stated that their criminal records were not exposed. In conclusion, the author attempted to clarify the actual situations of social discrimination ex-convicts suffer from on the basis of their past experiences at the time of releasing from prison, however the results of their responses themselves were not enough to clarify the essence of discrimination. Nevertheless, it is deemed that why such the essence of discrimination has not been clarified was ascertained.
