Numerous evidences support the pathogenesis that M. pneumonias pneumonia is associated with cell-mediat-ed immune reaction. We report 2 cases of severe M. pneumoniae pneumonia in previously healthy sisters, who were both admitted during an epidemic of M. pneumoniae pneumonia. The elder sister, who was 16 years old, was admitted with M. pneumoniae pneumonia. She showed no response to treatment with clarithroycin and levo-floxacin, and eventually progressed to severe ARDS, requiring mechanical ventilation. After treatment with hydrocortisone (200 mg/day), there were rapid improvements in clinical manifestations and chest radiographic findings. The younger sister, who was 14 years old, was admitted 10 days later, Presenting with fever but no pneumonic lesions on chest radiograph. Just like her sister, the infection showed no response to clarithromycin. Fever persisted and pneumonic consolidation with mild pleural effusion was noticed in the left lower lobe on the 5th hospital-day. After treatment with oral prednisolone (1 mg/kg), she showed rapid defervescence and on the 8th hospital day, no pneumonic lesions were detectable on chest radiograph. Given the fact that the pathogenesis of pneumonia and extrapulmonary manifestations in M. pneumoniae infection is immune-mediated, an immuno-suppressive therapy would be validated for selected patients with M. pneumoniae infections.

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a systemic capillary vasculopathy. Patients present with proximal muscle weakness, raised muscle enzymes, and pathognomic skin rashes such as heliotrope rash, Gottron’s papules. Main complications are calcinosis, lipodystrophy, osteoporosis. Complement-mediated damage of vessels is a major mechanism. Magnetic resonance imaging is currently widely used to diagnosis of JDM. The goals of treatment are to control inflammatory myositis and prevent disease complication. Early, aggressive treatment of JDM associated with a better prognosis. High-dose corticosteroids in combination with methotrexate is the mainstay of treatment. The course of JDM is variable. (J Rheum Dis 2022;29:14-21)

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a novel multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) has been reported worldwide since the first cases were reported in Europe in April 2020. MIS-C is temporally associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection and shows Kawasaki disease (KD)-like features. The epidemiological and clinical characteristics in COVID-19, KD, and MIS-C differ, but severe cases of each disease share similar clinical and laboratory findings such as a protracted clinical course, multiorgan involvement, and similar activated biomarkers. These findings suggest that a common control system of the host may act against severe disease insult. To solve the enigmas, we proposed the protein-homeostasis-system hypothesis in that every disease involves etiological substances and the host’s immune system controls them by their size and biochemical properties. Also, it is proposed that the etiological agents of KD and MIS-C might be certain strains in the microbiota of human species and etiological substances in severe COVID-19, KD, and MIS-C originate from pathogen-infected cells. Since disease severity depends on the amounts of inflammation-inducing substances and corresponding immune activation in the early stage of the disease, an early proper dose of corticosteroids and/or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) may help reduce morbidity and possibly mortality among patients with these diseases. Corticosteroids are low cost and an analogue of host-origin cortisol among immune modulators. This study’s findings will help clinicians treating severe COVID-19, KD, and MIS-C, especially in developing countries, where IVIG and biologics supplies are insufficient.

2006년 6월 4일 14시경 전라북도 군산시 금광동(35˚ 58' 49.30" N, 126˚ 42' 21.19" E)에서 Malayan (=Malaysian) Night Heron (Gorsachius melanolophus) 1개체를 첫 관찰하였다. 이번 관찰은 한국에서의 최초 기록이다. At 14:00, June 4, 2006, one individual of Malayan Night Heron (Gorsachius melanolophus) was observed at Geumgwang-dong, Gunsan-si, Jeollabuk-do, Korea (35˚ 58' 49.30" N, 126˚ 42' 21.19" E). This observation was the first record in Korea.

<P>Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) was carried out over nanocrystalline ferrihydrite-based (Fe9O2(OH)(23)) catalysts activated by different reducing agents: syngas (H-2+CO), CO, and H-2. The syngas activation successfully changed the ferrihydrite-based catalysts into an active and stable catalytic structure with chi-carbide (Fe2.5C) and epsilon'-carbide (Fe2.2C). The crystal structure of the catalysts obtained by syngas activation was similar to the structure obtained by CO activation; this similarity was probably due to the peculiar reduction behavior of the ferrihydrite-based catalysts, which exhibit much greater reducibility in CO atmosphere than in H-2 atmosphere. The performance of the catalysts activated by syngas was much higher than the performance of the catalysts activated by H-2 and was comparable to the performance of the catalysts activated by CO. This strongly demonstrates that the ferrihydrite-based catalysts are advantageous for industrial FTS processes because syngas can be commonly used for both activation pre-treatment and subsequent reaction.</P>

Among possible NDT techniques, microwave method is proven to be effective in fast and non-contact inspection of concrete structures and inclusions inside concrete. It is also found that the microwave method has a potential in detecting debonding between fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plate and concrete. In this paper, the research work needed for the development of a reliable microwave method are studied in actual measurements of concrete specimens reinforced with FRP. Concrete specimens are made with FRP and artificial delamination inside. A microwave measurement system with horn antenna with high center frequency and broad frequency bandwidth are used to image inside concrete specimens for the detection of debonding between concrete and FRP and measurement results are analyzed.
