In Classified Vector Quantization(CVQ) for image coding, the block classification pondering the block characteristics will be the most important procedure if we consider system performance. But it does not take effect because classification of conventional CVQ followed act on a heuristic and statistics method. In order to solve the problem of conventional methods, i.e, for block classification effectively we propose a fuzzy inferencing algorithm to improve its performance. To do this, fuzzy rules must be generated in the first. Our rules are based on energy distribution in transform domain with respect to spatial variation. Ultimately fuzzy inferencing of this paper apply these fuzzy rules for efficient block classification on a input image. As a result of efficient classification, our proposed method shows that blocking effect is decreased and PSNR(peak to peak signal to noise ratio) is increased by about 1 ∼ 2 dB for 0.2 ∼ 0.6 bpp range, when the performance is compared with Aizawa's scheme^[9].

Small Bowel Obstruction Caused by an Aberrant Congenital Band in a Child

        Min Ha Kwak,김애숙,Ji Hae Kang,최성민,김두권,이동석,하동엽,김성우 대한소아소화기영양학회 2012 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.15 No.3

Small bowel obstruction due to congenital band is not only rare in children, but also difficult to diagnose, because common symptoms such as vomiting and abdominal pain are observed in patients. In order to prevent a fatal result, an anomalous congenital band should be considered in the discriminative diagnosis of intestinal obstruction in children who have no previous experience of operation or intraperitoneal inflammation. This report presents a 4-year-old boy who was admitted with abdominal pain and nonbilious vomiting for a day. The initial suspicion was for acute gastroenteritis. However, after further investigation and performance of surgery, the intestinal obstruction associated with a congenital band was confirmed. No recurrence was observed during the 8-month follow-up period. Thus early confirmation based on radiologic study is a crucial factor for the diagnosis of small bowel obstruction caused by a congenital band.

      • Exogenous and Endogeneous Disialosyl Ganglioside GD1b Induces Apoptosis of MCF-7 Human Breast Cancer Cells

        Ha, Sun-Hyung,Lee, Ji-Min,Kwon, Kyung-Min,Kwak, Choong-Hwan,Abekura, Fukushi,Park, Jun-Young,Cho, Seung-Hak,Lee, Kichoon,Chang, Young-Chae,Lee, Young-Choon,Choi, Hee-Jung,Chung, Tae-Wook,Ha, Ki-Tae,Ch MDPI 2016 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCES Vol.17 No.5

<P>Gangliosides have been known to play a role in the regulation of apoptosis in cancer cells. This study has employed disialyl-ganglioside GD1b to apoptosis in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells using exogenous treatment of the cells with GD1b and endogenous expression of GD1b in MCF-7 cells. First, apoptosis in MCF-7 cells was observed after treatment of GD1b. Treatment of MCF-7 cells with GD1b reduced cell growth rates in a dose and time dependent manner during GD1b treatment, as determined by XTT assay. Among the various gangliosides, GD1b specifically induced apoptosis of the MCF-7 cells. Flow cytometry and immunofluorescence assays showed that GD1b specifically induces apoptosis in the MCF-7 cells with Annexin V binding for apoptotic actions in early stage and propidium iodide (PI) staining the nucleus of the MCF-7 cells. Treatment of MCF-7 cells with GD1b activated apoptotic molecules such as processed forms of caspase-8, -7 and PARP (Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase), without any change in the expression of mitochondria-mediated apoptosis molecules such as Bax and Bcl-2. Second, to investigate the effect of endogenously produced GD1b on the regulation of cell function, UDP-gal: β1,3-galactosyltransferase-2 (GD1b synthase, Gal-T2) gene has been transfected into the MCF-7 cells. Using the GD1b synthase-transfectants, apoptosis-related signal proteins linked to phenotype changes were examined. Similar to the exogenous GD1b treatment, the cell growth of the GD1b synthase gene-transfectants was significantly suppressed compared with the vector-transfectant cell lines and transfection activated the apoptotic molecules such as processed forms of caspase-8, -7 and PARP, but not the levels of expression of Bax and Bcl-2. GD1b-induced apoptosis was blocked by caspase inhibitor, Z-VAD. Therefore, taken together, it was concluded that GD1b could play an important role in the regulation of breast cancer apoptosis.</P>

Comparison study between single enzyme and multienzyme complex in distiller’s dred grains with soluble supplemented diet in broiler chicken

        Min-Jin Kwak,Dong-Jin Ha,Min Young Park,어주영,Kwang-Youn Whang,Young Hoon Kim 한국축산학회 2024 한국축산학회지 Vol.66 No.2

Upregulation of the nutritional value of feed is the major target of various studies in the livestock industry, and dietary enzyme supplementation could aid in digesting the nondegrading nutrients of grains in feed ingredients. Dried distillers’ grains with solubles (DDGS) is a byproduct of the fermentation process in the beverage industry and can be used as a large supply source of fiber in feed. Therefore, we conducted an experiment with male broiler chickens to investigate the effect of various types of enzymes on DDGS and compare the efficacy of single enzyme and multienzyme complexes on growth performance and gut environments in broiler chickens. We used 420 1-day-old broiler chickens (Ross 308), and they were allotted into 4 dietary treatments with seven replications (CON, corn-soybean meal [SBM] diet; NC, DDGS supplemented diet; SE, 0.05 % of mannanase supplemented DDGS-based diet; MC, 0.10% of multienzyme complex (mannanase and xylanase, glucanase) supplemented DDGS-based diet. The dietary exogenous enzyme in the DDGS-supplemented diet could improve growth performance as much as the growth of the control group, and digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and gross energy were significantly increased by enzyme addition in groups of chicks fed DDGS-supplementation diet. Moreover, the populations of pathogenic bacteria, coliforms, and Bacteroidetes were significantly decreased by enzyme supplementation, which might lead to improved gut mucus-secreting cells and inflammatory cytokines in the jejunum. Collectively, dietary single enzyme and multienzyme complexes could improve gut environments, including intestinal immune responses and gut microbial population, and lead to improvement of growth performance in broiler chickens.

      • GM-CSF가 골수줄기세포의 이동에 미치는 영향

한동하 ( Dong Ha Han ),곽민근 ( Min Geun Kwak ),최병현 ( Byung Hyune Choi ),하윤 ( Yoon Ha ),박현선 ( Hyun Seon Park ),민병현 ( Byoung Hyun Min ),우제홍 ( Ze Hong Woo ),박소라 ( So Ra Park ) 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2005 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.2 No.3

The granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is known to play an important role in the hematopoiesis of bone marrow-derived cells and the modulation of their functions as well as the maintenance of homeostasis and overall immune competence. In this study, we investigated the effects of GM-CSF on the activation of bone marrow stem cells in rats. GM-CSF was treated to SD rats via intraperitoneal injection everyday at 10 mg/ml for 5 consecutive days. After 6 days, the bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) mononuclear cells (MNCs) were collected to analyze the colony forming units-fibroblasts (CFU-F), colony forming units-granulocyte macrophage (CFU-GM), and burst-forming units-erythroid (BFU-E). In result, the numbers of MNCs and the CFU-GM and BFU-E counts in BM were all decreased, while those of PB increased. These results suggest that GM-CSF induced the proliferation and mobilization of MNCs and hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) to PB. The CFU-F counts showed no significant increase both in BM and PB suggesting that GM-CSF showed no significant effects on the proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells. In contrast, the increase in the alkaline phosphatase expression of CFU-F colonies in BM indicates that GM-CSF might induce the differentiation of MSCs at least to some extent. In conclusion, GM-CSF not only plays important roles in proliferation and differentiation of stem cells in BM but also promotes migration of HSCs into PB.

Gastrointestinal and Nongastrointestinal Complications of Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and Colonoscopy in the Real World: A Nationwide Standard Cohort Using the Common Data Model Database

( Ha Il Kim ),( Jin Young Yoon ),( Min Seob Kwak ),( Jae Myung Cha ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회(구 대한소화관운동학회) 2021 Gut and Liver Vol.15 No.4

Background/Aims: The global trend of an expanding aged population has increased concerns about complications correlated with gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy in elderly patients; however, there have been few reports published on this issue. Methods: In this retrospective, observational cohort study performed between 2012 and 2017, serious complications of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, and colonoscopic polypectomy were compared between patients according to age (≥65 years vs 18-64 years). We used the Health Insurance Review and Assessment-National Patient Samples database, previously converted to the standardized Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership-Common Data Model. Serious complications within 30 days of the procedure included both GI complications (bleeding and perforation) and non-GI complications (cerebrovascular accident [CVA], acute myocardial infarction [AMI], congestive heart failure [CHF], and death). Results: A total of 387,647 patients who underwent EGD, 241,094 who underwent colonoscopy, and 89,059 who underwent colonoscopic polypectomy were assessed as part of this investigation. During the study period, endoscopic procedures in the older group steadily increased in number in all endoscopy groups (all p<0.001). Further, pooled complication rates of bleeding, CVA, AMI, CHF, and death were approximately three times higher among older patients who underwent EGD or colonoscopy. Moreover, pooled complication rates of CVA, AMI, CHF, and death were approximately 2.2 to 5.0 times higher among older patients who underwent colonoscopic polypectomy. Conclusions: Elderly patients experienced approximately three times more GI and non-GI complications after EGD or colonoscopy than young patients. Physicians should pay attention to the potential risks of GI endoscopy in elderly patients. (Gut Liver 2021;15:569-578)

Momordica charantia extract supplementation tend to affect improvements in body composition and metabolic parameters on tennis players: A pilot study

Kwak, Jae-Jun,Yook, Jang Soo,Ha, Min-Seong The Korean Society of Applied Science and Technolo 2019 한국응용과학기술학회지 Vol.36 No.4

Dietary supplements derived from natural sources are an essential factor in optimizing athletic performance. It has been proposed that the extract of Momordica charantia (M. charantia) that is known as a bitter melon can be potentially used as a novel supplement for health promotion. This pilot study aimed to examine the effects of the M. charantia extract when administered in the form of a sports drink, and we evaluated changes in body composition and metabolic factors in tennis players after 4-week consumption of the extract. Eight male college tennis players were instructed to consume an M. charantia extract 6 times per day (3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon, and the total daily intake was 600 ml). Collected data were analyzed using paired t-tests to examine the changes over time after consumption of the M. charantia extract. The results revealed a significant increase in the trunk muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, and daily calorie intake (p < 0.05). Levels of protein, minerals, and total body water showed an increased tendency (not statistically significant), whereas intracellular water and extracellular water showed a decreased trend. Furthermore, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle mass, and muscle mass showed an increased tendency. In conclusion, consumption of the M. charantia extract caused an increase in parameters related to protein, muscle mass, and metabolism. It seems that follow-up studies related to fatigue, inflammation, and stress hormones related to the M. charantia extract consumption would be needed.
