Background and Purposes: Over the past three decades, numerous studies performed in Korea have reported that job stress is a determinant risk factor for chronic diseases and work disability. Every society has its own culture and occupational climate particular to their organizations, and hence experiences different occupational stress. An occupational stress measurement tool therefore needs to be developed to estimate it objectively. The purpose of this study is to develop and standardize the Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS) which is considered to be unique and specific occupational stressors in Korean employees. Subjects and Methods: Data were obtained from the National Study for Development and Standardization of Occupational Stress (NSDSOS Project: 2002-2004). A total of 12,631 employees from a nationwide sample proportional to the Korean Standard Industrial Classification and the Korean Standard Occupational Classification were administered. The KOSS was developed for 2 years (2002-2004). In the first year, we collected 255 items from the most popular job stress measurement tools such as JCQ, ERI, NIOSH and OSI, and 44 items derived from the a qualitative study (depth interview). Forty-three items of KOSS, in the second year, were retained for use in the final version of the KOSS by using Delphi and factor analysis. Items were scored using conventional 1-2-3-4 Likert scores for the response categories. Results: We developed eight subscales by using factor analysis and validation process: physical environment (3 items), job demand (8 items), insufficient job control (5 items), interpersonal conflict (4 items), job insecurity (6 items), organizational system (7 items), lack of reward (6 items), and occupational climate (4 items). Together they explained 50.0% of total variance. Internal consistency alpha scores were ranged from 0.51 to 0.82. Twenty-four items of the short form of the KOSS (KOSS-SF) were also developed to estimate job stress in the work setting. Because the levels of the subscales of occupational stress were gender dependent, gender-specific standard norms for both the 43-item full version and the 24-item short form using a quartile for the subscales of KOSS were presented. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that KOSS might be an appropriate measurement scale to estimate occupational stress of Korean employees. Further and more detailed study needs to be conducted to improve the validity of this scale.

Vol.11 No.1

The purpose of the research is to investigate the effects of a portfolio system on students' socio-psychological classroom environments in elementary science class. Two schools were selected from a metropolitan area, a city, and one school from a rural area in central Korea. Two fifth-grade classes were sampled from each school selected, and one class is assigned to experimental group and the other to control group, respectively. The total number of participants of the study is 399. Portfolio system was administered to experimental group, and conventional teaching to control group for two and half month. WIHIC, an inventory to measure socio-psychological classroom environment, was administered as a pre-and post-test. Experimental group gained statistically higher scores on WIHIC after administering portfolio system. They showed more positive perceptions on sub-areas of WIHIC such as teacher support, task orientation, and equity. There is interaction between region and group: the effects of the portfolio system is highest in rural area, lowest in metropolitan area, and the city in between. Portfolio system have positive effects on students' socio-psychological classroom environments. Enhanced socio-psychological classroom environments is expected to contribute to positive self-concept, higher science achievements, and self-directed learning.

Experiences of Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment for the North Korean Refugees

Kim, Beong Ki,Kim, Hee Jin,Kim, Ho Jin,Cha, Jae Hyung,Lee, Jin Beom,Jeon, Jeonghe,Kim, Chi Young,Kim, Young,Kim, Je Hyeong,Shin, Chol,Lee, Seung Heon The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory 2019 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.82 No.4

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is increasing in immigrants. We aimed to investigate the current status of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment for North Korean Refugees (NKR) compared to South Koreans Contacts (SKC). Methods: TB close contacts in a closed facility of SKC and NKR who underwent LTBI screening in a settlement support center for NKR were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Among tuberculin skin test (TST) ${\geq}10mm$ (n=298) reactors, the males accounted for 72.2% in SKC (n=126) and 19.5% in NKR (n=172) (p<0.01). The mean age was higher in South Korea ($42.8{\pm}9.9years$ vs. $35.4{\pm}10.0years$, p<0.01). Additionally, the mean TST size was significantly bigger in NKR ($17.39{\pm}3.9mm$ vs. $16.57{\pm}4.2mm$, p=0.03). The LTBI treatments were initiated for all screened NKR, and LTBI completion rate was only 68.0%. However, in NKR, LTBI treatment completion rate was significantly increased by shorter 4R regimen (odds ratio [OR], 9.296; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.159-20.774; p<0.01) and male (OR, 3.447; 95% CI, 1.191-9.974; p=0.02). Conclusion: LTBI treatment compliance must be improved in NKR with a shorter regimen. In addition, a larger study regarding a focus on LTBI with easy access to related data for NKR should be conducted.

Inhibitory effects of Saururi chinensis extracts on melanin biosynthesis in B16F10 melanoma cells.

        Lee, Do Hyun,Kim, Dong Ha,Oh, In Young,Kim, So Young,Lim, Yun Young,Kim, Hyeong Mi,Kim, Young Heui,Choi, Yoo Mi,Kim, Sung Eun,Kim, Beom Joon,Kim, Myeung Nam Pharmaceutical Society of Japan 2013 Biological & pharmaceutical bulletin Vol.36 No.5

<P>Saururus chinensis has been used in folk medicine in Korea for the treatment of edema, jaundice, gonorrhea, and several inflammatory diseases. Saururi chinensis extracts (SCE) have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, as well as anti-asthmatic, antihypertensive, anti-angiogenic, and therapeutic activities for atopic dermatitis. However, the inhibitory activity of SCE on the melanogenesis signaling pathway is not completely understood. This study examined the effects of SCE on the melanogenesis signaling pathway activated by α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). We found that SCE inhibited melanin production in a dose-dependent manner without causing cytotoxicity in B16F10 cells. Interestingly, SCE decreased α-MSH-induced tyrosinase activity in B16F10 cells but did not inhibit tyrosinase activity under cell-free conditions. The results of this study indicate that SCE may reduce pigmentation by way of an indirect, nonenzymatic mechanism. We also found that SCE decreased α-MSH-induced microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase expression and induced the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). These results suggest that the depigmenting effect of SCE may result from downregulation of MITF and tyrosinase expression due to increased ERK activity. Thus, our results provide evidence that SCE might be useful as a potential skin-whitening agent.</P>

Profiling of vitreous proteomes from proliferative diabetic retinopathy and nondiabetic patients

        Kim, Taeoh,Kim, Sang Jin,Kim, Kyunggon,Kang, Un-Beom,Lee, Cheolju,Park, Kyong Soo,Yu, Hyeong Gon,Kim, Youngsoo WILEY-VCH 2007 Proteomics Vol. No.

<P>Diabetes can lead to serious microvascular complications like proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), which is the leading cause of blindness in adults. The proteomic changes that occur during PDR cannot be measured in the human retina for ethical reasons, but could be reflected by proteomic changes in vitreous humor. Thus, we considered that comparisons between the proteome profiles of the vitreous humors of PDR and nondiabetic controls could lead to the discovery of novel pathogenic proteins and clinical biomarkers. In this study, the authors used several proteomic methods to comprehensively examine vitreous humor proteomes of PDR patients and nondiabetic controls. These methods included immunoaffinity subtraction (IS)/2-DE/MALDI-MS, nano-LC-MALDI-MS/MS, and nano-LC-ESI-MS/MS. The identified proteins were subjected to the Trans-Proteomic Pipeline validation process. Resultantly, 531 proteins were identified, i.e., 415 and 346 proteins were identified in PDR and nondiabetic control vitreous humor samples, respectively, and of these 531 proteins, 240 were identified for the first time in this study. The PDR vitreous proteome was also found to contain many proteins possibly involved in the pathogenesis of PDR. The proteins described provide the most comprehensive proteome listing in the vitreous humor samples of PDR and nondiabetic control patients.</P>

The Safety Evaluation of a Potent Angiogenic Activator, Synthetic Peptide (SFKLRY-NH2) for the Skin Application

        Kim, Dong-Ha,Lim, Yun-Young,Kim, Hyeong-Mi,Kim, So-Young,Kim, Beom-Joon,Park, Sung-Gil,Lee, Tae-Hoon,Cho, Soo-Muk Korean Society of ToxicologyKorea Environmental Mu 2012 Toxicological Research Vol.28 No.1

A novel synthetic hexapeptide (SFKLRY-$NH_2$) that displays angiogenic activity has been identified by positional scanning of a synthetic peptide combinatorial library (PS-SPCL). This study was carried out to investigate the irritation of the SFKLRY-$NH_2$ on the skin. The tests were performed on the basis of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) guidelines. In results, cell toxicity is not appeared for SFKLRY-$NH_2$ in HaCaT cells and B16F10 cells. SFKLRY-$NH_2$ induced no skin irritation at low concentration ($10{\mu}m$), mild irritation at high concentration (10mM). We consider that this result is helpful for saying about the safety of SFKLRY-$NH_2$ in clinical use.

        Kim, Yun Sung,Kim, Hyeong Min,Chang, Cheol,Hwang, In Cheon,Oh, Hyuncheol,Ahn, Jong Seog,Kim, Ki Deok,Hwang, Byung Kook,Kim, Beom Seok John Wiley Sons, Ltd. 2007 Pest management science Vol.63 No.12

<P>BACKGROUND: Microbial secondary metabolites are a rich source of antifungal agents and have merit as alternatives to synthetic fungicides. To develop disease control agents against powdery mildew, the lipopeptide antibiotic neopeptins were identified from the culture broth of a Streptomyces sp., and in vivo control efficacy of the compounds was evaluated on cucumber plants under glasshouse conditions.</P><P>RESULTS: The Streptomyces sp. KNF2047 antagonistic against powdery mildew development in cucumber plants was isolated from a soil sample. Antifungal compounds were purified from the culture broth and identified as neopeptin A and B. In vitro microtitre assays revealed the inhibitory activities of the compounds in the range 128–512 µg mL−1 against the mycelial growth of Alternaria mali, Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium cucumerinum, Colletotrichum lagenarium, Didimella bryoniae and Magnaporthe grisea. Although neither compound showed remarkable in vitro antifungal activity against other plant pathogenic fungi, a mixture of neopeptins (484 mg of neopeptin A and 290 mg of neopeptin B per gram of partially purified powder) showed potent protective and curative activity against cucumber powdery mildew in vivo. The disease control activity of the neopeptins at a concentration of 2.4 mg L−1 was 92.1%, which was similar to that of the commercial fungicide fenarimol (89.3% at 63 mg L−1) and that of the commercial biocontrol agent Actinovate (67.4% at 2 × 107 cfu L−1).</P><P>CONCLUSION: Neopeptin mixtures isolated from Streptomyces sp. KNF2047 showed potent disease control activity against powdery mildew development on cucumber plants. Copyright © 2007 Society of Chemical Industry</P>
