Backgrounds and Objectives: Vascular dementia is a group of dementing disoders arising from various stroke syndrome. Among these. subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD) is regarded as a relatively distinct clinical entity. However, MRI patterns of SIVD are not homogenous. In some patients, lacunes are dominant, and in others, subcortical white matter changes are. This study was designed to compare risk factor profiles between SIVD with and without multiple lacunes. Methods: We divided 47 subjects (22 males, mean age. 68 years) recruited from VADAPET (Multicenter Trial For Evaluation Of The Changes In the PET Images Of Subcortical Vascular Dementia Patient) study into two groups one with more than 5 lacunes in deep gray matter (lacune group) and the other with 5 or less(non-lacune group) Clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of two groups were compared. Results: Nineteen of 47 patients (40%) belonged to the lacune group. The lacune and non-lacune groups d d not differ in the following variables: age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia heart disease, history of stroke or TIA, history of trauma or major surgery, family history of hypertension stroke, or dementia, age at diagnosis of dementia, body mass index, white blood cell count, ESR, CRP, fibrinogen, hemoglobin A1C, total cholesterol. LDL cholesterol creatinine, proteinuria, glucosuria, and microhematuria. However, male sex, smoking alcohol. hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol were possibly associated more with lacune group SIVD than with non-lacune group (p<0 1) Multivariate analyses revealed that smoking, hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol were independent predictors of SIVD with multiple lacunes Conclusion: Our study suggests that SIVD with multiple lacunes may be significantly different in smoking habits hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol from SIVD without multiple lacunes.

This paper presents a result of application of input shaping to a micro-stage with a displacement amplification mechanism. The stage considered in this study is subjected to severe residual vibration in its lever mechanism to amplify displacement. The system dynamics exhibit some nonlinear nature due to the hysteresis of the PZT actuator. Input shaping method is successfully applied to the system so as to eliminate residual vibration from the system. The experimental study also shows that staircase input is useful to avoid the performance degrade by the nonlinear characteristics.

Input shaping is widely accepted to be a useful tool for removing residual vibration in cranes. The UMZV(unity magnitude zero vibration) input shaper is often employed for cranes driven by on-off type motors. However, the UMZV input shaper makes the cranes move slightly further than expected from the original command while it can remove the residual vibration out of the cranes. This paper deals with a method of input shaping scheme which can compensate the position inaccuracy as well as remove the residual vibration of cranes. The proposed method is illustrated through a numerical simulation.

A base structure which mounts positioning stages is often subjected to vibration due to the reaction force against the stage motions. This paper deals with an input shaping method for positioning stage in consideration of vibration base structures along with the stage vibration. A dynamic model is established to investigate the vibration of positioning stage and base structure. Two input shapers, a conventional input shaper and a new input shaper, are applied to eliminate both the residual vibrations in base structure as well as positioning stage. Simulations show that the input shaping methods effectively remove the residual vibrations.

<P>Inorganic‐based flexible light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) using single‐crystalline GaN/ZnO coaxial nanorod heterostructures grown directly on large graphene films are reported on page 4614 by Gyu‐Chul Yi and co‐workers. The LEDs demon‐strate reliable operation in a flexible form, with no significant degradation in their electroluminescent or electrical characteristics. This approach provides a general and rational route to develop many different inorganic optoelectronics in flexible or stretchable forms. </P>
Primary Spinal Dumbbell-Shaped Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma Located Intradurally and Extradurally

Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas are rare malignant tumors of the bone and soft tissue. Spinal mesenchymal chondrosarcomas are even rarer and, to the best of our knowledge those that are concomitantly located in the intradural and extradural regions, have never been reported. We report a case of a 25-year-old man with back pain and bilateral progressive weakness of the lower extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a markedly enhanced dumbbell-shaped mass at the T7 level. The lesion was intradurally located at the left side of the spinal cord, and extended extradurally to the extraforminal space through the T7-8 intervertebral foramen. The tumor was completely excised through a posterior approach. Microscopic examination and immunohistochemical studies confirmed mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. Postoperative radiation therapy and chemotherapy were also performed to prevent local recurrence and metastasis. The patient has been symptom-free for two years after surgery. Herein, we reviewed and discussed the clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of primary intraspinal mesenchymal chondrosarcomas in the literature.

Objective:This study was conducted in order to demonstrate the initial experience of the Solitaire AB stent in mechanical intracranial thrombectomy. Methods:We conducted a retrospective review of 40 consecutive patients who underwent intra-arterial Solitaire AB stent thrombectomy for treatment of acute ischemic strokes between October 2010 and November 2011. Demographic, clinical, and radiological presentations and outcomes were studied. Results:Twenty six men and 14 women with a mean initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score of 14.1 (range, 8-26) and a mean age of 65.4 (range, 32-89) years were included in this study. Occlusion sites were as follows: internal carotid artery (n = 11), middle cerebral artery M1 (n = 22), M2 (n = 5), and basilar artery (n = 2). Successful revascularization was achieved in 36 (90%) patients. The mean NIHSS score was 11.6 (range, 1-23) at 24 hours after the procedure, and 42.5% of patients showed a modified Rankin scale score of ≤ 2 at 90 days. New occlusion by migrated emboli was observed in one (2.5%) case. Post-procedural intracerebral hemorrhage occurred in only one case (2.5%), with an all-cause mortality of two (5%). Conclusion:The Solitaire AB device is a relatively safe and effective tool for use in performance of mechanical thrombectomy in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
