Objective: Occupational medicine specialists in the Busan, Ulsan and Kyung-Nam areas established an area-based occupational disease surveillance system and used this system to collected case information for the purpose of preventing occupational diseases Methods: l l hospital participated in this system. The authors selected five main diseases, which were hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WRMSD), occupational asthma, occupational skin disease and occupational and occupational lung cancer and established their case definitions. All cases were reported on the web, and real time analysis was conducted. Results: Between April 2001 and April 2003, 192 cases of HAVS, 118 cases of WRMSD, 33 cases of occupational asthma, 17 cases of occupational skin disease and 17 cases of occupational lung cancer (for a total of 377 cases of these five main diseases) were reported. most of the HAVS cases came from shipbuilding, and 172 of them (92.7%) were associated with grinding. Of the four main types of WRMSD, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) was the most prevalent with 46 cases and shipbuilding was also the main industry involved (83.9%). The ergonomic risk factors involved mainly associated with the hand. In 19 (57.6%) and 4 (12.1%) cases of occupational asthma, the agents involved. The causative agents of occupational lung cancer included Cr, welding fume, PAH, Ni, etc. 10(58.8%) of the cases were diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma and 5(29.4%) as adenoma. Conclusion: This result showed that an area-based occupational disease surveillance system might provide an effective method of evaluating the prevalence of such diseases, however the Busan, Ulsan and Kyung-Nam provinces are too large to be treated as individual areas. Therefore, the authors suggest that each province should establish its own surveillance system.

<P>Cancer stem–like cells (CSLCs) contribute to the initiation and recurrence of tumors and to their resistance to conventional therapies. In this study, small interfering RNA (siRNA)-based screening of ∼4800 druggable genes in 3-dimensional CSLC cultures in comparison to 2-dimensional bulk cultures of U87 glioma cells revealed 3 groups of genes essential for the following: survival of the CSLC population only, bulk-cultured population only, or both populations. While diverse biologic processes were associated with siRNAs reducing the bulk-cultured population, CSLC-eliminating siRNAs were enriched in a few functional categories, such as lipid metabolism, protein metabolism, and gene expression. Interestingly, siRNAs that selectively reduced CSLC only were found to target genes for cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acid synthesis. The lipidomic profile of CSLCs revealed increased levels of monounsaturated lipids. Pharmacologic blockage of these target pathways reduced CSLCs, and this effect was eliminated by addition of downstream metabolite products. The present CSLC-sensitive target categories provide a useful resource that can be exploited for the selective elimination of CSLCs.—Song, M., Lee, H., Nam, M.-H., Jeong, E., Kim, S., Hong, Y., Kim, N., Yim, H. <P>Novel 5'-deoxycarbocyclic purine phosphonic acid analogs with the 4'-electropositive moiety, fluorine were designed, and synthesized from glyceraldehyde. The cyclopentenol intermediate, 9, was successfully synthesized by the ring-closing metathesis of divinyl 8. The condensation reaction of cyclopentanol 15 with purine bases under Mitsunobu conditions successfully afforded the desired phosphonate analogs. The synthesized nucleoside phosphonic acid analogs, 19, 22, 26, and 29, were subjected to antiviral screening against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1. Guanine phosphonic acid analog 29 showed significant anti-HIV activity (EC50 = 10.3?μM).</P>

Congenital fetal syphilis can cause by spirochetes cross the placenta from about 14 weeks of gestation. The clinical manifestations of congenital fetal syphilis are the results of active infection and inflammation and they are influenced by gestational age, stage of maternal syphilis, maternal treatment, and immunological response of the fetus. Untreated syphilis in pregnancy leads to adverse outcomes, including still birth, prematurity, low birth weight, congenital disease among newborn babies. We have a case of active fetal syphilis infection and rapid course of disease in untreated maternal primary infection. A 16-year-old woman at 28+2 weeks of gestation was referred with maternal reactive of FTA-ABS Ig M and Ig G, and fetal hepatosplenomegaly, severe ascites, and thickened placenta on ultrasound scan. The woman had a history of painless small vulvar sore about one month ago, and a report of ultrasound scan showed fetal abdomen with scanty ascites at 27+3 weeks of gestation. Thus the woman had started treatment with benzathine penicillin 2.4 million units. However, the fetus resulted in intrauterine fetal death at 28+6 weeks gestation with severe fetal hydropse, ascites, and pleural effusion. Polymerase chain reaction of amniotic fluid for Treponema pallidum was positive and FTA-ABS Ig M in cord blood was reactive. It is important in all pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy should be screened serologically for syphilis.

1. Animal experiment refers to research involving experimental animals. Experimental animals refer to animals used for research. Animals are used in experiment related to food and health functional food. More than 3 million experimental animals are used in Korea every year. 2. Research ethics are ethics that researcher must observe when conducting research. The protection of experimental animals is one of ethical principles to be observed in research. Protecting experimental animals means proper respect and care for animals when using them in research and not conducting unnecessary or poorly designed animal experiments. 3. National laws and guidelines related to animal experiment include the Animal Protection Act, the Guidelines for Animal Experiment, the Laboratory Animal Act, and the Guidelines for the management and operation of laboratory animals. These national laws and guidelines stipulate the responsibilities and obligations of researchers and matters to be observed by researchers. 4. There is a 3R principle that must be followed to protect experimental animals. This is to replace animal experiment with other methods, to reduce the number of animals used as much as possible, and to refine experimental methods so as not to cause unnecessary suffering to animals. 5. An Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee should be established in the animal experimenting institution. In order to ensure that experimental animals can be protected and that animal experiments can be conducted ethically and scientifically, this committee reviews protocols for animal experimentation as well as inspects and supervises whether animal experiments are conducted in compliance with legal standards and ethical principles. 6. A researcher who intends to conduct animal experiments must submit a protocol for animal experiment to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee for approval prior to conducting animal experiments. This protocol should include the rationale for the need for animal experiment, not only the selection of the species of experimental animals but also the appropriateness of the number of experimental animals, measures to minimize the pain and stress experienced by experimental animals and so on.

<P>The membrane electrolyte assembly (MEA) designed in this study utilizes a double-layered cathode: an inner catalyst layer prepared by a conventional decal transfer method and an outer catalyst layer directly coated on a gas diffusion layer. The double-layered structure was used to improve the interfacial contact between the catalyst layer and membrane, to increase catalyst utilization and to modify the removal of product water from the cathode. Based on a series of MEAs with double-layered cathodes with an overall Pt loading fixed at 0.4 mg cm–2 and different ratios of inner-to-outer Pt loading, the MEA with an inner layer of 0.3 mg Pt cm–2 and an outer layer of 0.1 mg Pt cm–2 exhibited the best performance. This performance was better than that of the conventional single-layered electrode by 13.5% at a current density of 1.4 A cm–2.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2015/aamick.2015.7.issue-50/acsami.5b07346/production/images/medium/am-2015-07346t_0006.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/am5b07346'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

<P>Intrauterine exposure to hyperglycemia is reported to confer increased metabolic risk in later life, supporting the ` developmental origins of health and disease' hypothesis. Epigenetic alterations are suggested as one of the possible underlying mechanisms. In this study, we compared pairwise DNA methylation differences between siblings whose intrauterine exposure to maternal gestational diabetes (GDM) were discordant. Methylation of peripheral blood DNA of 18 sibling pairs was measured using Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip assays. Of the 465,447 CpG sites analyzed, 12 showed differential methylation (false discovery rate < 0.15), including markers within genes associated with monogenic diabetes (HNF4A) or obesity (RREB1). The overall methylation at HNF4A showed inverse correlations with mRNA expression levels, though non significant. In a gene set enrichment analysis, metabolism and signal transduction pathways were enriched. In conclusion, we found DNA methylation markers associated with intrauterine exposure to maternal GDM, including those within genes previously implicated in diabetes or obesity.</P>

Leaf senescence is a developmental process by which a plant actively remobilizes nutrients from aged and photosynthetically inefficient leaves to young growing ones by disassembling organelles and degrading macromolecules. Senescence is accelerated by age and environmental stresses such as prolonged darkness. Phytochrome B (phyB) inhibits leaf senescence by inhibiting phytochrome-interacting factor 4 (PIF4) and PIF5 in prolonged darkness. However, it remains unknown whether phyB mediates the temperature signal that regulates leaf senescence. We found the light-activated form of phyB (Pfr) remains active at least four days after a transfer to darkness at 20℃ but is inactivated more rapidly at 28℃. This faster inactivation of Pfr further increases PIF4 protein levels at the higher ambient temperature. In addition, PIF4 mRNA levels rise faster after the transfer to darkness at high ambient temperature via a mechanism that depends on ELF3 but not phyB. Increased PIF4 protein then binds to the ORE1 promoter and activates its expression together with ABA and ethylene signaling, accelerating leaf senescence at high ambient temperature. Our results support a role for the phy-PIF signaling module in integrating not only light signaling but also temperature signaling in the regulation of leaf senescence.
