        Seasonal and diurnal variation in serum testosterone was measured by radioimmunossary in 3 mature Korean native male goats. Blood was collected at 3-h intervals for 24h in each season. Mean levels of 4 seasons ranged from 0.82 to 2.06ng/ml and no difference was among seasons, although level in fall and winter was slightly higher. Diurnal level tended to increase at daytime in all season and when diurnal variation in level was compared to daily mean of each season, level of daytime greatly(P<0.05) increased in summer. However, variation between light and dark period in other seasons did not show significant difference. Daytime increase of testosterone was found 3 to 4 after dawn and level increased 1 to 2h ahead in summer and fall than that in others. These results in serum testosterone suggest that there was no great seasonal variation in endocrine function of goat testis.

        돼지의 산자성비에 관한 연구

        The sex ratio (percentage of male) of offspring in swine was examined on the basis of the farrowing records obtained from the St. Isidore Farm in Cheju island. The records were available for 11,260 pigs from 612 litters of Landraces (5,798 pigs) and 619 litters of crossbreds (5,462 pigs) farrowed from 1968 to 1971. The results obtained in this study are as follows. 1. The sex ratio of 11,260 pigs was 52.94%, 54.27% for the Landrace and 51.52% for the crossbred. The sex ratios were significantly different from 50%. No significant difference was observed between the two breeds, although the sex ratio tended to be higher in the Lardrace than in the crossbreds. 2. The sex ratios for the years 1968 through 1971 were 51.82%, 50.92%, 51.55%, and 53.36%, respectively. The sex ratio for 1971 was significantly different from 50%, but those for other years were statistically insignificant. The Landrace sex ratio was especially high in 1970 and 1971. The sex ratio difference between years was not significant. 3. The sex ratio was 49.00% far spring, 54.51% for summer, 51.00% for autumn, and 51.05% for winter. The sex ratio for summer was significantly different from 50%, but they were statistically insignificant for other seasons. The sex ratio for summer was significantly higher than that for spring and autumn, and the sex ratio for autumn was significantly higher than that for spring. 4. The sex ratio for the first, second and over third parity was different from 50%. There were no significant differences among parities. 5. The sex ratio was not significantly different from 50 0, for most litter sizes, but was significant for the litter sizes of 6, 7, 8, 9, and 13, and for the 6-10 group. No significant differences were observed between litter sizes. 6. The sex ratio was significantly different from 50% only in 4 Landrace sires, but the sex ratio differences among 14 sires, 8 Landrace, 3 Large White, and 3 Duroc sires, were statistically insignificant.

        8체질의학과 질병생태학의 공통성에 관한 연구

        8체질의학과 질병생태학은 질병의 원인을 병균 이외의 유전적 요인, 환경적 요인, 문화적 요인의 상호관계, 즉 인간과 환경의 관계에서 접근한다는 점에서 상당한 유사성을 공유한다. 본 연구에서는 한의학의 8체질의학과 지리학의 질병생태학 간의 공통성을 실증적으로 검토하는 것을 목표로 두었다. 한의원을 내방하는 환자 647명의 임상 데이터와 전라남도 영광군의 사례를 분석하고 검증한 결과 도출된 내용은 다음과 같이 요약된다: 첫째, 각 시도별로 체질의 지리적 분포는 상이하게 나타나며, 이러한 분포 양상은 크게 해양형과 내륙형으로 분류할 수 있다. 둘째, 체질에 따라 잘 걸릴 수 있는 질환과 태생지의 상호관련성은 비교적 큰 것으로 파악되었다. 그렇지만 특정한 질환이 모든 체질에게 동일하게 발생하는 것이 아니라 지리적 환경의 특성에 영향을 받는 식생활이나 생활습관에 따라 사람들에게 차별적으로 발생하는 것으로 보인다. 셋째, 유전, 자연환경, 문화 등 요인의 상호연관성을 면밀하게 분석하기 위하여 전라남도 영광군의 사례를 실험적으로 분석해 보았다. 그 결과 자신의 체질에 맞는 식습관이나 생활습관을 가지고 있는 경우에는 비교적 건강한 상태를 유지하고 있었지만, 그렇지 않은 경우에는 다양한 질환에 노출되어 있었다. 8체질의학과 질병생태학의 공통성에 관한 연구는 아직 초기 단계에 있으므로 앞으로 이러한 공통성을 규명하는 방법과 노력이 다양하게 개발되고 투여되어야 할 것이다. There is a considerable community between Eight Constitution Medicine and disease ecology in that they examine the relationship between humans and environment in terms of genetic, environmental and cultural factors, in addition to the factor of germs. In this respect, the purpose of this research aims to investigate the community between Eight Constitution Medicine, a branch of Eastern Medicine and disease ecology in geography. The research method is to analyse the clinical results from 647 patients and the data from a field survey on the Yeonggwang-gun County, Jeollanam-do Province. The results are summarized as the following: First, geographical distribution of patients varies depending on the type of physical constitution; it is also divided into two types, an oceanic type and an inland type. Second, it is highly probable that there is a significant relation between a vulnerable disease in association with a type of physical constitution and patient’s native place; there are diseases that are not associated with all the patients who have the same constitution; they might be incurred by the eating or life habits in association with the characteristics of geographical environment. Third, the case study of Yeonggwang-gun County, Jeollanam-do Province, with a focus on the mutual relationship among the three factors. shows that patients, who share in common the eating or life habits that coincide with their own personal types of constitution, maintain a good health condition; if not, they tend to be exposed to a various kinds of disease. Because the study on the community between Eight Constitution Medicine and disease ecology is now at the early stage, diverse types of approaches should be tried to be applied in the future.

        돈의 산자수 , 이유두수 및 동복자 이유시 총체중에 대한 환경과 품종의 효과

        This study was conducted to determine the effects of farrowing year, season and number, and mating system on litter size at birth, pig number and total litter weight at weaning in swine. The least square means were estimated on the basis of data obtained from 3,414 litters of Land-race, Large White and their crosses raised at St. Isidore Farm from 1972 to 1977. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The effect of farrowing year on litter size at birth and pig number at weaning was significant at 5% level and there was highly significant difference at 1% level for total litter weight at weaning. 2. The effect of farrowing season was nonsignificant for pig number and total titter weight at weaning except litter size at birth The litter size at birth was largest in fa1l. 3. The litter size at birth was smallest for the 1st parity, but the effects of over 2nd parity were nonsignificant The effects of parity for pig number and total titter weight at weaning 4. The litter size at birth and pig number at weaning from Landrace dams were larger than those from Large White dams. However, the total litter weight at weaning from Large White dams was heavier than that from Landrace dams.

        고강도의 지구성 운동 수행에 의한 근비대 신호 단백질 mTOR, p70S6K, 4E-BP1 및 AMPK의 발현 변화

        The present study was performed to investigate the effect of endurance running on muscle protein synthesis. Male Sprague-Dawley rats(n = 49) were randomly assigned to the time course of the treadmill running (VO₂max 75-80%, 1hr). Muscle samples were obtained before and recovery period of the exercise (immediately, 30 min, 1hr, 2hr, 3hr and 6hr from the running) at the soleus muscle for the determination of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), p70S6 kinase (p70S6k), eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) 4E-binding protein (4E-BP1) and AMPK phosphorylation. Endurance exercise generated a significant increase in mTOR phosphorylation immediately after exercise and the phosphorylation maintained up to 6hr of recovery (∼90%, p=.024). In addition, 4EBP1 phosphorylation was significantly increased at the immediately after exercise and decreased up to an hour recovery. However, 4EBP1 was resumed to increase for 2-3hrs during recovery (∼48%, p=.05). However, Phosphorylation of p70S6K was elevated above rest level throughout the 6hrs recovery and reached peak at 6hr recovery (303%, p=.001). On the other hand, Phospho-AMPK (Thr172) was increased from 30min to 3hr of recovery (p<.05). These results clearly demonstrate that intensitive endurance running result in significant differences in protein signaling of muscle protein synthesis.

        소 정자에 있어서 활성산소계가 정자 기능과 지방산화 및 DNA 절편화에 미치는 영향

        Objective : To evaluate the effects of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated with a xanthine (X) and xanthine oxidase (XO) system on sperm function, the change of sperm characteristics, lipid peroxidation, and DNA fragmentation in bovine spermatozoa. Materials and Methods: ROS were produced using a combination of 1000 uM X and 50 mU/ml XO. The ROS scavengers: superoxide dismu tase (SOD) (200 U/ml) and catalase (500 U/ml) were also tested. Spermatozoa were incubated for 2 hours in BWW medium with a combination of X-XO supplemented with or without ROS scavengers at $37^{circ}C$ under 5% $CO_2$ incubator. Sperm movement characteristics by CASA (computer-aided sperm analysis), HOST (hypoosmotic swelling test), Caionophore induced acrosome reaction, malondialdehyde formation for the analysis of lipid peroxidation, the percentage of DNA fragmentation using the method of TdT-mediated nick end labelling (TUNEL) by flow cytometry were determined after 2 hours incubation. Results: The action of ROS on bovine spermatozoa resulted in a decreased in capacity for sperm motility, Ca-ionophore induced acrosome reaction and membrane integrity, an increased in malondialdehyde formation and the percentage of sperm with DNA fragmentation. In the effects of antioxidant, catalase completely alleviated the toxic effects induced by the ROS in terms of sperm function and characteristics, however SOD exhibited no capacity to reduce the toxic effects. Conclusion: The ROS can induce significant damages to sperm functions and characteristics. The useful ROS scavengers can minimized the defects of sperm function and various damages of spermatozoa.

        K-water에서 운영·관리 중인 수차발전기(대수력, 보수력, 조력)는 전기사업법에 따른 정기검사 및 자체규정에 따라 종합시험 등 성능진단을 수행하며 안전관리에 만전을 기하고 있다. 이 중 보수력은 현재 녹조대비 댐-보 연계 운영 등에 의해 당초 보 관리수위보다 수위 저하하여 운영하는 등 사회적인 변화를 겪고 있는 상황으로 이때 보 수위가 당초 제작사에서 제시한 발전가능수위를 벗어난 경우 운영부서에서는 무효방류 최소화를 목적으로 안정적인 발전가능 범위에 대한 기술 검토가 필요한 실정이다. 이에 수위가 낮아졌을 경우 수차발전기와 토목구조물간의 운영 안정성에 관하여 성능진단을 통해 종합분석하여 안정적으로 설비를 운영·관리하고자 한다.

        Chlorpromazine activates p21Waf1/Cip1 gene transcription via early growth response-1 (Egr-1) in C6 glioma cells

        2-Chloro-10-[3(-dimethylamino)propyl]phenothiazinemonohydrochloride (chlorpromazine) is a phenothiazine derivative used clinically to control psychotic disorders. It also exhibits an anticancer activity. Treatment with chlorpromazine (CPZ) results in cell-cycle arrest at the G2/M phase in rat C6 glioma cells. CPZ reduces the expression of cell cycle-related proteins, such as cyclin D1, cyclin A, and cyclin B1, but causes an increase in the p21Waf1/Cip1 level. The molecular mechanism by which CPZ regulates p21Waf1/Cip1 expression is unknown. Here, we provide evidence that CPZ activates the p21Waf1/Cip1 gene promoter via induction of the transcription factor early growth response-1 (Egr-1) independently of p53 in C6 cells. A point mutation in the Egr-1-binding motif within the p21Waf1/Cip1 promoter abrogated promoter inducibility due to CPZ. Forced expression of Egr-1 enhanced p21Waf1/Cip1 promoter activity. In contrast, knockdown of endogenous Egr-1 by small interference RNA attenuated CPZ-induced p21Waf1/Cip1 promoter activity. A chromatin immunoprecipitation assay demonstrated that Egr-1 binds to the p21Waf1/Cip1 gene promoter. Further analysis showed that the ERK and JNK MAP kinases are required for induction of Egr-1 by CPZ. Finally, stable silencing of Egr-1 expression lead to attenuated CPZ-inducible p21Waf1/Cip1 expression and inhibited G2/M phase cell-cycle arrest. These results demonstrate that a functional link between ERK and JNK MAP kinase pathways and p21Waf1/Cip1 induction via Egr-1 contributes to CPZ-induced anticancer activity in C6 glioma cells.

        미경산돈에서 교배전 자궁내 정액항원 주입에 의한 산자수 증가에 관한 연구

        This experiment was conducted to evaluate effect of a single intrauterine infusion of semen or seminal plasma at estrus before mating on subsequent litter traits of crossbred gilts. In addition, presence and level of early pregnancy factor activity (rosette inhibition titre, RITZ in serum of treated gifts and in vitro immunosuppressive activity of these antigens from boars used were tested immunologically to support the results in this experiment. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Semen-infused gifts significantly had a larger litter size (11.4) at birth than controls (9.6), but no significant differences were detected between others. 2. There was a tendency toward increased total pigs born alive, litter weight at birth and number of pigs suckling in antigen-infused gifts, but the differences between treated-gifts and controls were not statistically significant. 3. EPF activity (RIT) before and after mating in previously infused-gifts was 10.7±2.8 in the serum of nonpregnant gifts and 19.3±3.8 in the serum of pregnant gifts. RIT $gt; 14 could be considered evidence of presence of EPF in pregnant gifts. 4. Seminal plasma infusion before mating induced on obvious rise of RIT. RIT at 24 h and 48 h after mating was much higher (18-23 and 21-22) :in semen-and seminal plasma-infused gifts than in controls. RIT at 24 h after mating was found to be positively correlated (r=0.84) to litter size born in 6 gifts. 5. Dialyzed seminal plasma from 4 boars was significantly immunosuppressive at a concentration of 500 ㎍/㎖ than controls and degree of immunosuppression varied among individuals when the concentrations was under 500 ㎍/㎖. Undialyzed semen samples from 3 boars resulted in loss of immunosuppressive activity. These results indicate that infusion of gifts with semen at estrus before mating can be improved reproductive efficiency because of more litter size at birth and sukling pigs than controls and that these antigens had immunosuppressive potential of antilymphocyte serum and immunosuppressive activity to porcine lymphocytes that generate an immune response.
