Background: Thyroid hormone has been known to affect hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity. Although the liver is the principal site of ethanol metabolism, stomach is also responsible in part for ethanol oxidation. The effects of thyroid hormone on ADH activity in gastric mucosa and other tissues of rats had not been previously examined. Method: The effects of thyroid hormone on liver, stomach, lung, and kidney ADH activities (nM of NADH/min/mg of cytosolic protein) have been investigated in male Sprague Dawley rats treated with propylthiouracil (50 mg/kg) for 14 days. Results: Whereas hepatic ADH activities were not changed by treatment with PTU(42.9(8.6 vs 45.2 (10.1), gastric ADH activities in PTU-treated rats increased by 258.8% of control rat (6.3 ( 0.6 vs 2.2 ( 1.2, p〈0.001). In the activities of other tissues, PTU treatment decreased lung ADH activity by 59.7% of control, and increased kidney ADH activities by 247.1% of control rats. Conclusion: These data suggest that hypothyroidism causes an increase of gastric alcohol metabolism, and that the increase of gastric ADH activity can partly restore the first pass metabolism of ethanol in hypothyroid rats.

This paper is about analyzed individual virtual cell loss probability and virtual bandwidth method using virtual link capacity for CAC. Since ATM networks have to accept various traffics, it is important to obtain the statistical multiplexing gain, But deterioraton of Quality of Service(QoS) can occur due to it. So the guaranty of QoS and the efficient utilization of resource are the key subjects in the reasearch. It is necessary to satisfy both conditions, but there are trade offs in these two. This paper shows the boundary of these trade offs, and these results are adopted to traffic control, and are applied to CAC.

In this paper, we evaluated two main QoS supporting routing protocol on wireless ad hoc network. At presence, wireless mobile communication focuses on how to efficiently support mobility of users more than QoS guarantee. However, in order to satisfy requirement of various applications which have been or will be served, QoS support service between source and destination becoming a very important issue. Of all routing protocols, DSR and AODV are very important routing protocol in MANET. So we simulated DSR and AODV QoS Routing Protocol Through simulation evaluation tool NS(Network Simulation) based on various environments.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disorder of unknown etiology characterized by presence of gastrointestinal symptoms, eosinophilic infiltratio n of one or more parts of gastrointestinal tract without involvement of other organs and absence of parasitic infestation. The clinical presentation depends on the extents and depths of eosinophilic infiltration. Mucosal involvement may result in abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss. We report a case of eosinophilic enterocolitis in a 55-year-old female presented with abdominal pain and watery diarrhea resulting in recurrent acute renal failure.

This study explored three sectors that one should know when he or she wants to use the PACS system. First, image acquisition, image saving and the quality of image output; Secondly, server and network; Thirdly, how to manage image saving and data base. The results were as follows; 1. Image Quality of PACS System 1) Image quality in the stage of image acquisition is affected by bit depth and matrix size. 2) Image quality in the stage of image saving is influenced by a compressed rate. Medical images are based n a principle of 2:1 non loss compress. 3) Image quality in the stage of image output is affected by monitor quality(brightness and the number of scanning line) 2. Server and Network 1) The use of server is different according to hospitals' scale. Clustering technique is used for main computer's DB because of system's stability. Doubling technique of power supply is also used. Ga-chun hospital and Baik hospital located in ll-san use Windows NT for the operating system of the server and other hospitals use UNIX. 2) ATM and Fast Ethenet is used for the Network that can transmit large data faster. In the case of hospitals that have PACS used the Network over 100 Mbps. There were two types of network construction-single network and double network. 3. Data saving and DB. 1) When choosing a saving media of PACS, speed and reliability and price are considered important categories. For short-term, RAID process is formed using HDD and long term Optical Juke Box is mainly used. 2) Oracle that is useful for large data management is used. 3) In the near future, HDD is going to be mainly used regardless of the short term or long term saving media and practical application of RAM Disk will increase.

In an aging society, there is an increasing possibility of the duplication of the drugs given to patients because they take many kinds of drugs. Among the prescriptions given to the patients who was treated at multiple ambulatory clinics in St. Mary's hospital for one month of September, 2002, in which drugs that has identical or similar effects are prescribed, we analysed and evaluated them by patients' characteristics, kinds of medication, severity of side effects on a case by case basis. More, we assessed the potential additional costs. As a result of this study, the duplication rate turned out to be 6.69% and it was shown that the proportion of the elderly patients over 60 was high. The gastro-intestinal medications took up a large part and most of the cases showed that the danger caused by double taking of medicine was slight, but there were some examples in which the serious side effects were predicted. Expected additional costs were the average 11.349 won and it ranges from the minimum of 56 won to the maximum of 135,720 won. In conclusion, the management of drug histories of the patients who need the plural treatments is very important and the necessity of the individual and professional guidance of taking medicines for the elderly patients is emerged, too.

Background and Objectives: De-escalation of dual-antiplatelet therapy through dose reduction of prasugrel improved net adverse clinical events (NACEs) after acute coronary syndrome (ACS), mainly through the reduction of bleeding without an increase in ischemic outcomes. Whether the benefits of de-escalation are sustained in highly thrombotic conditions such as ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is unknown. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of de-escalation therapy in patients with STEMI or non-ST-segment elevation ACS (NSTE-ACS). Methods: This is a pre-specified subgroup analysis of the HOST-REDUCE-POLYTECH-ACS trial. ACS patients were randomized to prasugrel de-escalation (5 mg daily) or conventional dose (10 mg daily) at 1-month post-percutaneous coronary intervention. The primary endpoint was a NACE, defined as a composite of all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, stent thrombosis, clinically driven revascularization, stroke, and bleeding events of grade ≥2 Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) criteria at 1 year. Results: Among 2,338 patients included in the randomization, 326 patients were diagnosed with STEMI. In patients with NSTE-ACS, the risk of the primary endpoint was significantly reduced with de-escalation (hazard ratio [HR], 0.65; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.48–0.89; p=0.006 for de-escalation vs. conventional), mainly driven by a reduced bleeding. However, in those with STEMI, there was no difference in the occurrence of the primary outcome (HR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.48–2.26; p=0.915; p for interaction=0.271). Conclusions: Prasugrel dose de-escalation reduced the rate of NACE and bleeding, without increasing the rate of ischemic events in NSTE-ACS patients but not in STEMI patients.

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>Overexpression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) is thought to promote survival of transformed cells. Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) exerts anti-proliferative effects on a broad range of epithelial cells. In the current study, we investigated whether TGF-β can regulate COX-2 expression in A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cells, which are TGF-β-responsive and overexpress COX-2.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Western blotting, Northern blotting, and mRNA stability assays were performed to demonstrate that COX-2 protein and mRNA expression were suppressed by TGF-β. We also evaluated the effects of tristetraprolin (TTP) on COX-2 mRNA using RNA interference.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>We demonstrated that COX-2 mRNA and protein expression were both significantly suppressed by TGF-β. An actinomycin D chase experiment demonstrated that COX-2 mRNA was more rapidly degraded in the presence of TGF-β, suggesting that TGF-β–induced inhibition of COX-2 expression is achieved via decreased mRNA stability. We also found that TGF-β rapidly and transiently induced the expression of TTP, a well-known mRNA destabilizing factor, before suppression of COX-2 mRNA expression was observed. Using RNA interference, we confirmed that increased TTP levels play a pivotal role in the destabilization of COX-2 mRNA by TGF-β. Furthermore, we showed that Smad3 is essential to TTP-dependent down-regulation of COX-2 expression in response to TGF-β.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The results of this study show that TGF-β down-regulated COX-2 expression via mRNA destabilization mediated by Smad3/TTP in A549 cells.</P>
