We analyzed records at Chonnam university hospital from Sep. 1. 1993 to Aug. 31. 1996 to assess clinical significance of the foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract. There were 133 episodes consisting of 79 pediatric and 54 adult patients as possible to review. In the pediatric patients, the coin was the most common cause of foreign body ingestion, while adult patients were usually caused by bones and meat. We removed foreign bodies in the oral cavity and oropharynx in 12 cases using direct laryngopharyngoscpy and forcep. Endoscopy was performed successfully in 47 of 51 patients in which was attempted; there were two complications composed of an aspiration pneumonia and a mediastinitis due to esophageal perforation. There were spontaneous passage of foreign bodies in 48 cases. We observed complications in 6 cases in which 4 cases needed operations due to complications. Foreign bodies which pass into the stomach can be observed for development of complications, as 94% of foreign bodies which reach the stomach spontaneously pass. Only 4 patients required interventions, which was done without mortality.

The upper area of the Chinyang Lake was devided into four segments, the Gyeongho River, the Yangcheon River, the Deokcheon River and the vicinity of the Chinyang Lake. The water pollution sources and the water quality of four segments were investigated and evaluated. This region was composed of a Dong in a city and 141 Ries in 6 Guns except for Yurunggun and Namwongun. Population density is low in all area except for Hamyang Up and Sancheong Up. Population is 84.903(58%) in the vicinity of the Gyeongho River, 26,093(18%) in the Yangcheon River, 23,039(16%) in the Deokcheon River and 11,468(8%) in the Chinyang Lake. Total occurance of BOD in the upper area of the Chinyang Lake was 45,493 ㎏/day, whose 66% was generated from domestic animals, 17% from the land and 26% from human wastes, respectively. The occurance of BOD in the views of segments analysis showed that 57.1% originated from the vicinity of the Gyeongho River, 28.4% from that of the Yangcheon River, 9.8% from that of the Deokcheon River and 4.8% from that of the Chinyang Lake. The most amount of BOD was discharged to the Gyeongho River, the second to the Deokcheon River and the least to the Chinyang Lake. Total occurance of SS in the upper area of the Chinyang Lake was 137,445 ㎏/day. The most amount of SS was discharged to the Gyeongho River, the second to the Yangcheon River, and the least to the Chinyang Lake. The waste of domestic animal produced the 66% of BOD and the 92% of SS in their total occurance and the 31% of BOD and the 76% of SS in their total discharge. It is concluded that the waste of domestic animal is the important pollution sources, which greatly impact the water quality of the Chinyang Lake. Total nitrogen and phosphorous content in the water of the upstream of the Chinyang Lake were very high. The water quality of the Yangcheon and the Deokcheon River was classified as 4 grade by high pH and numbers of coliform group especially. The high nitrogen content in the upstream of the Gyeongho and the Yangcheon River implies that much nitrogen is originated from the farm land. It is found that the Chinyang Lake is in the process of the eutrophication.

The flora and vegetation of Ui-do were investigated two times from July 23th to July 29th in 1985, and from July 8th to July 15th in 1985. The vascular plants identified in these investigations were 102 families, 302 genera, 376 species, 58 varieties and 4 formae, summing up to 438 species total. Of these species, 126 species were found commonly in the lists reported previously by Lee, etc. (1980) and Lee (1981). The total number of species in this island was thus summerized as 104 families, 323 genera and 481 species. Also Fisher's index was calculated as 426.4. This value was higher than that of Hong-do. By the ZM school method, the vegetaion of Ui-do was classified into 15 community types, i.e. the evergreen broad-leaved forests(Camellia japonica-Machilus thunbergii, Camellia japonica-Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Camellia japonica community), the evergreen needle-leaved forests (Pinus thunbergii community), the deciduous forests (Mallotus japonicus, Carpinus coreana community), Pseudosasa japonica community, the grassland vegetation (Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, Arundinella hirta-Zoysia japonica, pennisetum alopecuroides-Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Agrostis clavata-Artemisia princeps var. orientalis community), the sand dune vegetation (Carex pumila, Imperata cylindrica var. koengii-Vitex rotundifolia, Ligustrvm quihoui var. latifolium community) and the grazing land. Each community was described in term of floristic, structual and environmental features. The synthesis table and the actual vegetaion map were prepared.

Tetrodotoxin is a neurotoxin produced by about 90 species of puffer fish and causes paralysis of central nervous system and peripheral nerves by blocking the movement of all monovalent cation. Ingestion of tetrodotoxin produces clinical manifestations such as paresthesias(within 10-45 min), vomiting, lightheadedness, salivation, muscle twitching, dysphagia, difficulty in speaking, convulsion and death that expressed by cardiopulmonary arrest with loss of brain stem reflex sometimes. Tetrodotoxin prevents or delays ischemia induced neuronal death by way of following 3 mechanisms. Firstly, it reduces the energy demand of the brain tissues. Secondly, it delays or even prevents anoxic depolarization. Finally, it deminishes ischemia induced cell swelling and cerebral edema. We report a case of puffer fish poisoning which presented with cardiopulmonary arrest and loss of brain stem reflex, but completely recovered by aggressive cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

In the present study, real-time analytical method was developed to monitor the sudden chemical discharge or accident. Selected Ion Flow Tube-Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) coupled with online headspace technique was applied to evaluate the feasibility of 12 organic compounds in aqueous samples for the first time in Korea. Target compounds were calibrated at five points ranged from 0.5 to 5 mg/L. As a result, the correlation coefficients of calibration curves were in the range of 0.92-0.99. From the repeated measurements, the limit of quantification (LOQ) was ranged between 0.11 and 1.28 mg/L. In the fugacity approach (closed system, steady-state assumption) transport of chemicals into the headspace is highly correlated with the air-water partition coefficient (K<sub>AW</sub>). 1,1-dichloroethene and propylene oxide showed quadratic types of calibration curves due to relatively high K<sub>AW</sub> values. These studies showed that the most organic compounds were clearly detected compared with Korean ambient water analytical guidelines. Thus, with further improvements in the increase of sensitivity and the number of detectable compounds could be a valuable online aquatic monitoring strategy.
