Background and Objectives: Cleft lip and palate are common defects in congenital deformity. They are the most frequent deformity in the face. Nose deformity is most common among various facial deformity at the center of face. So we must operate to correct the deformity at the earliest stage to give a patient and parent spiritual relief from anxiety, and it is the trend of the treatment recently. We must know the facial anthropometry in newborn to try at the early stage, but there is a lack of literature and research on newborns. So we carried out this research to form base data for operations. Materials and Methods : The noses of 90 newborns in Gwangju-Cheonnam area were analyzed quantitatively, based on 10 nasal measuring points and 13 anthropometric values taken directly from the face of newborns. The relationship between the nasal measurements were studied in 11 proportion indices. Results : Following are our mean values in newborn. Width of the nasal root was 13. 9mm. Width of the nose was 22. lrnm, Width of the columella was 4. 5mm. Height of the nose was 22.6mm. Length of the nasal bridge was 20.1mm. Nasal tip protrusion was 8.9mm. Width of the nostril floor was 6.4mm. Thickness of the nasal ala and length of the nasal ala were 4.0mm, 15.4mm. Length of the columella was 3.9mm. The most common nostril shape was Type II (0-45 degrees in inclination of the nostril axis from the horizontal). Nasal index was 97.8. Columella-nasal tip protrusion length index was 43.9. Conclusion : The development of the columella was relatively incomplete in the case of newborn and was the result to appear. The normal indicies could be used clinically in identifying the it's normality as well as morphologic characteristics of the craniofacial structures. They also could be used in differential diagnosis between the morphologically similar congenital craniofacial anomalies. In preoperative design, in setting the criteria of the postoperative results, and assessing the effect of the operation, Finally, they supply the plastic surgeon and the other specialists in the craniofacial surgery with basic normal population data.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare preceptors and new graduate nurses on their perception of preceptor teaching effectiveness. Methods: The participants were 90 new nurses and 90 preceptors who worked in A medical center. The data were collected from July 1 to September 30, 2008. A cross-sectional descriptive survey was done using a structured questionnaire. Results: New nurses' perception (4.07±.44) of the preceptor teaching effectiveness was significantly higher than perception of the preceptors (3.57±.37). Fifty five percent of new graduate nurses reported a lack of coherence in the preceptor's practice guidelines. For 5 causal factors classified on the teaching effectiveness, the factor of 'Professional knowledge and ability' showed the highest score, but 'Interpersonal and communication skill' got lowest score for both group. Preceptors responded that they did not have enough time to teach well because of their heavy workloads. Conclusions: These results suggest that the preceptors need appropriate compensation and education opportunities, and new graduate nurses need consistent education by the teaching professionals. Therefore, it is important to give preceptors full charge of the preceptorship. Also, it will be necessary to develop education programs to enhance interpersonal and communication skill for preceptors and new nurses.

To develop a clotrimazole-loaded solid suppository with poloxamer and propylene glycol, the melting points of various formulations composed of poloxamer 188 (P 188) and propylene glycol were investigated. The dissolution study of clotrimazole delivered by the suppository composed of P 188 and propylene glycol was performed. The mixtures composed of P 188 and propylene glycol were homogeneous. Propylene glycol affected the melting points of poloxamer mixtures. In particular, the mixture [P 188/propylene glycol (70/30%)] with the melting point of about 32°C was a solid form at room temperature and instantly melted at physiological temperature. Furthermore, propylene glycol affected greatly the dissolution rates of clotrimazole from the suppository. Dissolution mechanism analysis showed the dissolution of clotrimazole was proportional to the time. Our results indicated that the solid suppository with P 188 and propylene glycol would be a candidate of rectal dosage form for clotrimazole.

Effects of various treatments for contaminated implants

Purpose: The purpose was to evaluate osseointegration of contaminated implants after sterilization. Materials and Methods: Resorbable blasting media surfaced implants (3.7×10 mm) were placed as a routine procedure in six mongrel adult dogs. In the control group, normal fixtures were placed. The implants were sterilized after contamination: ethylene oxide gas (group 1), normal saline (group 2), and without any treatment (group 3). Results: New bone formation rate (NBFR) of the control group was significantly lower than groups 1 and 3 at 4 weeks, and the control group was highest at 8 weeks. At 8 weeks, NBFR and bone to implant contact showed no significant difference among all groups, and osseointegration was also observed. Conclusion: Osseointegration can be observed in contaminated implants after sterilizing.

As commensal colonizers in livestock;there has been little attention on staphylococci;especially non-aureus staphylococci (NAS);contaminating meat production chain. To assess prevalence of staphylococci in retail pork and slaughterhouse carcass samples in Korea;we collected 578 samples from Korean slaughterhouses (n=311) and retail markets (n=267) for isolation of staphylococci and determined antimicrobial resistance phenotypes in all the isolates. The presence of and prevalence of fusB-family genes (fusB;fusC;fusD;and fusF) and mutations in fusA genes were examined in fusidic acid resistant isolates. A total of 47 staphylococcal isolates of 4 different species (Staphylococcus aureus;n=4; S. hyicus;n=1; S. epidermidis;n=10; Mammaliicoccus sciuri;n=32) were isolated. Fusidic acid resistance were confirmed in 9/10 S. epidermidis and all of the 32 M. sciuri (previously S. sciuri) isolates. Acquired fusidic acid resistance genes were detected in all the resistant strains; fusB and fusC in S. epidermidis and fusB/C in M. sciuri. Multi-locus sequence type analysis revealed that ST63 (n=10;31%) and ST30 (n=8;25%) genotypes were most prevalent among fusidic acid resistant M. sciuri isolates. In conclusion;the high prevalence of fusB-family genes in S. epidermidis and M. sciuri strains isolated from pork indicated that NAS might act as a reservoir for fusidic acid resistance gene transmissions in pork production chains.

<P><B><I>Introduction:</I></B> Nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) are a family of enzymes that play an essential role in synthesizing nitric oxide (NO) by oxidizing <SMALL>L</SMALL>-arginine. As previously reported, NO is a significant mediator in cellular signaling pathways. It serves as a crucial regulator in insulin secretion, vascular tone, peristalsis, angiogenesis, neural development and inflammation. Due to its important role, the inhibition of these vital enzymes provides, as tools, the opportunity to gain an insight into potential therapeutic applications targeting NOSs.</P><P><B><I>Areas covered:</I></B> This paper reviews the patent literature between 2011 and mid-2014 that specified inhibitors of NOS family members as the significant targets. Google and Baidu search engines were used to find relevant patents and clinical information using NOSs or NOS inhibitor as search terms.</P><P><B><I>Expert opinion:</I></B> Considerable recent progress has been made in the development of NOS inhibitors with pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties, and such development is likely to continue. The patented compounds attenuated mostly embodying evidence from <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I> trials that demonstrate good potential for future clinical human trials and industrial applications. Furthermore, new techniques such as X-ray ligand crystallographic study and structure-activity relationship were popularly utilized, which give new insights for developing novel, safe, efficient and selective NOS inhibitors.</P>
