The purpose of this study was to develop a problem solving brief counseling program for couples in crisis of divorce and to examine its effectiveness. The study consisted of two parts, one for the program development and the other for examining its effectiveness.
For the program development two major processes were followed. First, a pilot program was developed through reviewing the relevant literature and research and having a consultation meeting of 12 professionals. Most of the contents, the structure of the contents, and the methods of delivering the contents ets. were determined at the meeting. Second, the pilot program was implemented using 5 couples in crisis of divorce, who volunteered to participate in the study. The final program was determined at the meeting based upon their feedback. The program was composed of understanding the basic concepts of Problem Solving Theory, that is, attitude, define, alternatives, predict, try out the skills related to these concepts. The program consisted of 6 sessions, 90 minutes per session, a total of 9 hours.
The program involved the following characteristics. First, the program was based upon Problem Solving Theory and Brief Counseling Therapy, which have been empirically supported by many researchers and practitioners. Second, the program systematically was structured according to the importance and applicability of the basic concepts. Third, with regard to the methods delivering the contents they were consistent with Problem Solving Therapy and Brief Counseling Therapy. Fourth, the program emphasized participant' application of what they learned at the counseling to their real life.
For the second part of examining the effectiveness of the program the methodology utilized was as following. The research design used was pretest-posttest-follow-through test control group design. The participants were 40 couples in crisis of divorce, 20 for the experimental group and 20 for the control group. The instruments used were Social Problem Solving Inventory-Revised Scale, Intention of Divorce Scale, Dissatisfaction of Marriage Scale, Practical Divorce Rate Scale. Some other instruments to measure the participants' evaluation of the program were also used.
The results of the second part of the study indicated that the problem solving brief counseling program for couples in crisis of divorce had a significant effect upon enhancing the participants' score of Social Problem Solving Inventory-Revised Scale and decreasing the scores of the Intention of Divorce Scale, the Dissatisfaction of Marriage Scale, and the Practical Divorce Rate Scale. Also, it was indicated that the contents and methodology of the program was appropriate to achieve the goals of the program. It is implied that the program of the study could be used for the couples in the process of divorce who are forced to wait for at least one month to get divorced by law in Korea.

본 연구의 목적은 이혼위기 부부를 위한 문제해결 단기상담 프로그램을 개발하고, 그 개발한 프로그램의 효과를 검증하는 것이다.
본 프로그램의 개발은 크게 2개 과정을 통하여 이루어졌다. 먼저 기존의 문제해결이론에 관한 문헌의 검토와 전문가 자문회의를 통하여 프로그램의 내용과 운영 및 진행방법을 결정한 후 예비프로그램 및 지침서를 개발하였으며, 다음으로 예비프로그램을 실시한 후 참여자의 피드백 분석 그리고 다시 전문가 자문회의를 통하여 수정 보완, 확정하였다. 프로그램의 주요 내용은 문제해결이론의 주요 개념인 태도, 정의, 대안, 예측, 실행 등으로 구성되었으며, 회기 당 90분씩 6회기, 총 9시간으로 구성되었다.
이와 같은 과정을 거쳐 개발된 본 프로그램은 다음과 같은 특징을 가지고 있다. 첫째, 본 프로그램은 많은 연구가들에 의해 그 효과가 검증된 문제해결이론과 단기상담치료에 기초하고 있다. 둘째, 프로그램 내용의 구성 차원에서, 문제해결이론과 단기상담치료의 핵심적인 개념들이 위계적이며 체계적으로 조직되고 통합되어 있다. 셋째, 프로그램 운영 방법 차원에서, 문제해결이론과 단기상담치료의 핵심 내용이나 주장과 일치하도록 구성되어 있다. 넷째, 배우고 익힌 내용을 즉시 현재 생활에 적용하도록 하여 참여자의 적용 능력을 강조하고 있다.
개발된 프로그램의 효과를 보다 심층적으로 규명하기 위하여 효과검증 과정을 거쳤다. 연구 설계는 사전-사후-추후(1개월 후) 검사 통제집단 실험설계이다. 그리고 참여자는 이혼위기의 부부로 40쌍(실험집단 20쌍, 통제집단 20쌍)이었다. 실험집단을 대상으로 본 연구자가 2007년 12월부터 2008년 1월까지 매주 2회, 매 회기 90분간, 총 6회기를 실시하였다. 사용한 검사 도구는 사회적 문제해결력, 이혼의향도, 결혼불만족도, 실제이혼율이었으며, 또한 프로그램에 대한 만족도 평가를 실시하였다.
효과 검증 결과, 실험집단은 사회적 문제해결능력이 유의미하게 향상되었으며, 이혼의향도, 결혼불만족도, 실제이혼율은 유의미하게 감소하였다. 종합적으로 본 연구에서 개발한 프로그램은 이혼위기 부부들의 문제해결능력을 증진하고 이혼위기 부부들을 문제해결을 돕는데 적절한 프로그램이라 할 수 있다. 특히 숙려기간의 이혼위기 부부를 위한 단기상담프로그램으로 활용될 수 있음을 강하게 시사하고 있다.
