This study was designed to develop social problem solving training program for adults with mental retardation and to evaluate the effects of the program. This program expanded the previous social problem solving skills training program in its emphasis on emotional components.
10 adults with mild mental retardation(MR) working in the sheltered workshop divided into two groups(training group/control group) matched with IQ and Matson evaluation of social skill with youngsters(MESSY) score. MRs of training group participated in the social problem solving program 3 times a week for 16 sessions and no treatment was given to controls. Each session lasted approximately 50 minutes. The experimenter herself served as trainer. In order to examine the effects of training program, employment specialist´s ratings of job tenure-related behaviors scale, parents´ ratings of MESSY, experimenter´s ratings of job-related problem solving competence scale, and participants´ self-reports of self-efficacy were employed as assessment tools. These scales were assessed three times - pre-training, pro-training, and a month later follow up.
Results of the study revealed that MRs in training group demonstrated significant improvement during pro-training in job-related behaviors, social skills, problem solving competence, and self-efficacy. A month later follow up showed continuation of these effects. Social problem solving training program developed in this study seemed to have beneficial, lasting effects in improving social skills of the adults MRs working in job situation. Meanings and limitations of this study and further study directions were also discussed.
