Resistance to imatinib mesylate (also known as Gleevec, Glivec, and STI571) often becomes a barrier to the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). In order to identify markers of the action of imatinib mesylate, we used a mass spectrometry approach to compare protein expression profiles in human leukemia cells (K562) and in imatinib mesylate-resistant human leukemia cells (K562-R) in the presence and absence of imatinib mesylate. We identified 118 differentially regulated proteins in these two leukemia cell-lines, with and without a $1\;{\mu}M$ imatinib mesylate challenge. Nine proteins of unknown function were discovered. This is the first comprehensive report regarding differential protein expression in imatinib mesylate-treated CML cells.

In order to obtain promising rice growth-promoting microbial strains that can be used as substitutes for chemical fertilizers, 172 bacterial strains were isolated from rice roots grown in Korean and Russian soils. Out of them, the strains KR076, KR083, KR181 and RRj228 showed plant growth-promoting activities on maize seedlings. Bacillus megaterium KR076 and Bacillus sp. KR083 showed both nitrogen-fixing and plant growth-promoting activities, while Rhizobium sp. KR181 and Pseudomonas sp. RRj228 appeared to support only plant growth-promotion, but not N2 fixation. Especially, RRj228 showed high growth promoting activity at low concentrations. Inoculation studies with KR083 and RRj228 revealed a high affinity to the Japonica rice variety such as Junambyeo than the Korean Tongil type variety such as Arumbyeo. Both KR083 and RRj228 strains showed rhizoplane and/or endophytic colonization in Japonica and Tongil types rice when soaked with the bacterial suspension of 1.1 × 10<SUP>5</SUP> cfu ml<SUP>-1</SUP> for six and twelve hours. However, the total bacterial cell numbers were higher in the roots of Japonica variety than in the Tongil type. In inoculation trials with Daesanbyeo rice variety, the seedlings inoculated with KR181 and RRj228 at the rate of 2.0 × 10<SUP>6</SUP> cfu ml-1 showed yield increment of 35% and 33% (p < 0.01), respectively, so that they contributed to the replacement of chemical fertilizer at half doses of N, P₂O<SUP>5</SUP>, and K2O in pots. In Junambyeo rice seedlings, the strain RRj228, when inoculated with a cell suspension of 1.8 × 10<SUP>6</SUP> cfu ml<SUP>-1</SUP>, promoted 3.4% higher yield at 70% dose than at a full dose level of N 110 kg ha<SUP>-1</SUP> in field. These results suggest that the rhizobacteria KR181 and RRj228 are prospective strains for enhancing rice performance.

<P>We present the results of high-resolution near-IR spectroscopy toward the multiple outflows around the Herbig Be star LkH alpha 234 using the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph. Previous studies indicate that the region around LkHa 234 is complex, with several embedded young stellar objects and the outflows associated with them. In simultaneous H- and K-band spectra from HH 167, we detected 5 [Fe II] and 14 H-2 emission lines. We revealed a new [Fe II] jet driven by radio continuum source VLA 3B. Position-velocity diagrams of the H-2 1-0 S(1) lambda 2.122 mu m line show multiple velocity peaks. The kinematics may be explained by a geometrical bow shock model. We detected a component of H-2 emission at the systemic velocity (V-LSR = -10.2 km s(-1)) along the whole slit in all slit positions, which may arise from the ambient photodissociation region. Low-velocity gas dominates the molecular hydrogen emission from knots A and B in HH 167, which is close to the systemic velocity; [Fe II] emission lines are detected farther from the systemic velocity, at V-LSR = -100--130 km s(-1). We infer that the H-2 emission arises from shocked gas entrained by a high-velocity outflow. Population diagrams of H-2 lines imply that the gas is thermalized at a temperature of 2500-3000 K and the emission results from shock excitation.</P>

Chronic hypophosphatemia caused by decreased intestinal absorption or increased renal clearance, may lead to rickets or osteomalacia independently of other predisposing abnormalities. The conditions commonly associated with increased renal clearance of phosphate are X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets, tumor associated rickets/osteomalacia, RTA and Fanconi syndrome. Recently we experienced 3 men with adult-onset, histologically proven osteomalacia associated with increased renal clearance of phosphate. None of them had a family history of bone disease, tumors or other tubular defects. All of these had remarkable biochemical and clinical improvement with medical treatment such as 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D and phosphate supplementation. Although we did not find tumors yet, we could not rule out the possibility of tumor-associated osteomalcia since it often takes several years to make a diagnosis because of small size, benign nature and unusual location of tumors. Thus, careful long-term follow up for tumor occurrence will be maintained in these patients with sporadic nonfamilial hypophosphatemic osteomalacia(J Kor Soc Endocrinol 9:25-31, 1994).
Streptomyces coelicolor의 pat 유전자 5'-Flanking Region의 염기서열

Streptomyces coelicolor의 phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (pat)유전자는 phosphinothricin(PPT) 저항성 유전자들로부터 고안된 primer를 사용하여 클로닝되었다. Southern blot 분석결과 S. coelicolor에서 얻어진 2.1-kb DNA 절편은 S. hygroscopicus의 bar유전자를 DNA-DNA hybridization 하였다. 본 논문은 S. coelicolor의 pat 유전자의 5'-flanking region의 염기서열을 분석하였다. The pat gene of Streptomyces coelicolor strain was cloned by using primers designed from the PPT resistant genes. Southern blot analysis was revealed a DNA-DNA hybridization between the obtained 2.1-kb DNA fragment from S. coelicolor and bar gene from S. hygroscopicus. This paper was analyzed for the nucleotide sequence about the 5'-flanking region of pat gene from S. coelicolor.

Primary lymphoma of the thyroid is a relatively rare malignant tumor of the thyroid. It is known to be frequently associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In Korea, a few cases of primary lymphoma of the thyroid have been reported and most of these cases were in the stage I E or II E. Recently, we experienced a case of the primary thyroid lymphoma, stage IV E associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in a 70-year-old woman who presented with dysphagia and dyspnea due to rapidly enlarging neck mass. She was treated with combination chemotherapy(cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, vincristine and methylprednisolone) and local radiotherapy and achieved partial response with resolution of dysphagia and dyspnea(J Kor Soc Endocrinol 9: 390-394, 1994).
열사이클에 의한 세라믹/금속접합의 잔류응력에 관한 연구

Thermal stresses at ceramic/metal interfaces in ceramic-metal joints are analyzed with emphases on assessing residual stresses produced and retained in the joints during joining processes of ceramics with metals, and evaluating their redistributions under applied thermal cycles. A thermoelastic plastic finite element method is adopted to compute various physical quantities associated with the thermal processes. The computational results demeonstrate that the residual stresses on the ceramic side in the metal-ceramic joints, generally, increase with increasing peak temepratures in the thermal cycles. Also, the higher the peak temperatures are in the thermal cycles, the higher values are obtained for intensities (Q) and coefficients (λ) of stress singularity near the end point along the interface on the ceramic side.

Tuberculous involvement of the thyroid is rarely reported in the world literature and only three case records are available in Korea, despite of high prevalence of tuberculosis. The authors recently encountered a patients with tuberculous abscess of the thyroid, probably isolated, who presented with dysphagia and thyroid nodule. Tuberculous abscess of the thyroid was suspected on the finding of needle aspiration cytology and acid fast staining of the aspirate. She was treated with surgical excision and anti-tuberculous chemotherapy. Description of the case profile and a brief review of the literature are made. (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 7:149~152, 1992)
