Background and Purpose: The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is the ratio of blood pressure in the lower legs to that in the arms. The intima-media thickness (IMT) of extracranial carotid arteries determined by B-mode ultrasound is a measurable index of the presence of atherosclerosis. A low ABI and a high carotid IMT are independently related to increased risk of cardiovascular events. This study examined the association between carotid IMT and ABI in patients with ischemic stroke. Materials and Methods: Retrospectively, 116 hospitalized patients with ischemic stroke were recruited. Using a pulse wave velocity ABI device along with carotid duplex sonography, we measured carotid IMT and ABI and investigated the correlation between average values. Results: There was a significant difference in carotid IMT between the normal and abnormal ABI groups (P=0.0262). The group with an abnormal ABI was more than five times as likely to have increased carotid IMT as the group with a normal ABI (age, sex-adjusted OR 5.67 (95% CI 1.85~17.38)). The ABI and carotid IMT showed a weak inverse linear correlation in patients with ischemic stroke (correlation coefficient −0.378 after adjusting for age and sex). Conclusion: Our study suggests that an abnormal ABI is associated with a high carotid IMT in patients with ischemic stroke.

Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the effect of simultaneous application of arthrocentesis and occlusal splint. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of 43 patients (3 males, 40 females) whose symptoms had improved was conducted at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dong-A University Hospital between 2008 and 2010. Subjects were divided into three groups: Group A (17 patients with arthrocentesis and occlusal splints simultaneously applied), Group B (13 patients whose symptoms did not improve with occlusal splints, undergoing arthrocentesis after occlusal splint use for 8 weeks), and Group C (13 patients that only used occlusal splints). We compared these groups in maximum comfortable opening (MCO) and the visual analogue scale of pain and noise. Follow-up was performed at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. Results: The improvement of symptoms was noted in all three groups, but Group A had a quicker improvement than the other groups, in terms of pain reduction and MCO increases. Conclusion: The simultaneous application of arthrocentesis and occlusal splints can reduce patient discomfort more quickly.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A new fluorescent probe for the selective detection of industrially important peracetic acid (PAA) was developed via oxidative cleavage of the phenylselenyl ether derivative of the 4-hydroxynaphthalimide. The probe showed no noticeable changes towards common oxidants and environmentally relevant metal ions and anions. Furthermore, PAA signaling was not influenced by the presence of background ionic species, except for certain redox-active species. Practical application of the probe to the determination of PAA in tap water and atmosphere was successfully executed using a smartphone as a stand-alone signal capturing and processing device.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A new peracetic acid (PAA)-selective reaction-based fluorescent probe was developed. </LI> <LI> Signaling was due to the PAA-assisted oxidative cleavage of selenyl ether. </LI> <LI> Selective signaling was possible over other common oxidants, metal ions, and anions. </LI> <LI> Using a smartphone as a stand-alone device, PAA detection in tap water was possible. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Status of Rice Paddy Field and Weather Anomaly in the Spring of 2015 in DPRK

To understand the impact of 2015 spring drought on crop production of DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea), we analyzed satellite and weather data to produce 2015 spring outlook of rice paddy field and rice growth in relation to weather anomaly. We defined anomaly of 2015 for weather and NDVI in comparison to past 5 year-average data. Weather anomaly layers for rainfall and mean temperature were calculated based on 27 weather station data. Rainfall in late April, early May, and late May in 2015 was much lower than those in average years. NDVI values as an indicator of rice growth in early June of 2015 was much lower than in 2014 and the average years. RapidEye and Radarsat-2 images were used to monitor status of rice paddy irrigation and transplanting. Due to rainfall shortage from late April to May, rice paddy irrigation was not favorable and rice planting was not progressed in large portion of paddy fields until early June near Pyongyang. Satellite images taken in late June showed rice paddy fields which were not irrigated until early June were flooded, assuming that rice was transplanted after rainfall in June. Weather and NDVI anomaly data in regular basis and timely acquired satellite data can be useful for grasping the crop and land status of DPRK, which is in high demand.
