        Hypereosinophilic syndrome is characterized by persistent blood eosinophilia of 1,500/ul or more in the absence of known causes and multiorgan dysfunction by eosinophil-related tissue damage. In Korea, some cases of hypereosinophilic syndrome with hepatic involvement have been described with prolonged benign clinical courses. Most of them were diffuse or multifocal lesions in imaging studies, and a few case presenting as a single mass has been described. Here we report a case of hypereosinophilic syndrome with hepatic involvement in a 65-year-old man who presented with multifocal mass lesions. By abdominal US and CT scan, multiple, ill-defined nodules were detected in throughout the liver. Liver biopsy revealed severe eosinophilic hepatitis, suggestive of hypereosinophilic syndrome. Hepatic mass lesions improved after steroid administration for several weeks.

        황토로부터 합성한 제올라이트에 의한 Cd(Ⅱ) 및 Cu(Ⅱ) 흡착특성

        Various kinds of zeolites, such as analcime (ANA), cancrinite (CAN), Na-P1 and sodalite octahydrate (SOD) could be synthesized from Hwangto by hydrothermal reaction in a high-pressure vessel. The adsorption characteristics of Cu(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) by Hwangto and its synthetic zeolites were investigated using the chemical and electrochemical surface parameters of these adsorbents. The heavy metal adsorptivity among the adsorbents decreased in the following sequences: Na-P1 > SOD > ANA > CAN > Hwangto. This sequence was the same with the values of surface site density (Ns) of these adsorbents and was correlated inversely with the values of pHpzc (pH of the point of zero charge) and the values of Ka2(int) (intrinsic surface deprotonation constant) of the adsorbents for synthetic zeolites, i.e., the adsorbents with higher values of Ns and with lower values of pHpzc and Ka₂(int) for synthetic zeolites showed higher heavy metal adsorptivity. With increasing pH, the heavy metal adsorptivity increased greatly between pHpzc and pH 6 or 7 because of the steep increase of negatively charged sites for synthetic zeolites, but for Hwangto, it increased broadly because of slow increase of negatively charged sites based on its lower surface sites.

      • Fast and Scalable Hydrodynamic Synthesis of MnO<sub>2</sub>/Defect-Free Graphene Nanocomposites with High Rate Capability and Long Cycle Life

        <P>The integration of metal oxides and carbon materials provides a great potential for enhancing the high energy and power densities of supercapacitors, but the rational design and scalable fabrication of such composite materials still remain a challenge. Herein, we report a fast, scalable, and one-pot hydrodynamic synthesis for preparing ion conductive and defect-free graphene from graphite and MnO<SUB>2</SUB>/graphene nanocomposites. The use of this hydrodynamic method using Taylor-Couette flow allows us to efficiently fast shear-exfoliate graphite into large quantities of high-quality graphene sheets. Deposition of MnO<SUB>2</SUB> on graphene is subsequently performed in a fluidic reactor within 10 min. The prepared MnO<SUB>2</SUB>/graphene nanocomposite shows outstanding electrochemical performances, such as a high specific capacitance of 679 F/g at 25 mV/s, a high rate capability of 74.7% retention at an extremely high rate of 1000 mV/s, and an excellent cycling characteristic (∼94.7% retention over 20 000 cycles). An asymmetric supercapacitor device is fabricated by assembling an anode of graphene and a cathode of MnO<SUB>2</SUB>/graphene, which resulted in high energy (35.2 W h/kg) and power (7.4 kW/kg) densities (accounting for the mass of both electrodes and the electrolyte) with a high rate capability and long cycle life.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        수확 후 산채류의 미생물 제어를 위한 이산화염소수와 유기산 및 Blanching 병합 처리

        수확 후 산채류의 미생물학적 안전성을 확보하기 위해 선정된 산채류인 취나물과 곤드레에 이산화염소수와 유기산 용액 병합 처리 및 이산화염소수, 유기산 용액, blanching 병합처리 후 미생물 제어 효과를 비교 분석하였다. 50 ppm 이산화염소수와 0.5% citric acid 용액의 병합 처리는 취나물과 곤드레의 총 호기성 세균 수를 2.80~3.64 log CFU/g, 효모 및 곰팡이 수는 2.02~2.67 log CFU/g 감소시켰다. 50 ppm이산화염소수와 0.5% fumaric acid 용액의 병합 처리 후 총 호기성 세균 수는 대조구와 비교하여 3.62~3.82 log CFU/g 감소하였으며, 효모 및 곰팡이의 경우에는 2.47~3.02 log CFU/g 만큼 감소하여 이산화염소수와 citric acid 용액의 병합 처리보다 fumaric acid 용액과의 병합 처리가 더 효과적인 병합 처리 조건이라고 생각된다. 이산화염소수와 fumaric acid 병합 처리 후 blanching 처리된 취나물의 총 호기성 세균 수는 대조구보다 5.12 log CFU/g 더 낮게 검출되었으며, 효모 및 곰팡이는 검출되지 않았다. 곤드레의 경우에도 효모 및 곰팡이는 검출되지 않았으며, 총 호기성 세균 수는 대조구와 비교하여 4.59 log CFU/ g 감소하였다. 따라서 본 연구 결과 이산화염소수와 유기산 용액 전처리 후 blanching 병합 처리가 산채류의 미생물학적 안전성을 확보하는 가장 효과적인 방법이라고 판단된다. To improve the microbiological safety of wild vegetables after harvest, Aster scaber and Cirsium setidens Nakai were treated with combinations of 50 ppm aqueous chlorine dioxide (ClO₂)/0.5% citric acid or fumaric acid, and 50 ppm ClO₂/0.5% fumaric acid/blanching at 90°C for 2 min. Combined treatment of 50 ppm ClO₂ and 0.5% citric acid reduced populations of total aerobic bacteria, yeast, and molds in Aster scaber and Cirsium setidens Nakai by 2.80∼3.64 and 2.02∼2.67 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to those of the control. Combined treatment of 50 ppm ClO₂ and 0.5% fumaric acid reduced total aerobic bacteria, yeast and molds populations by 3.62∼3.82 and 2.47∼3.02 log CFU/g, respectively. Based on the results, combined treatment of ClO₂ and fumaric acid was more effective in controlling microorganisms in the wild vegetables than either ClO₂ or citric acid. In addition, combined treatment of ClO₂/fumaric acid/blanching reduced the populations of total aerobic bacteria by 4.59∼5.12 log CFU/g, and populations of yeast and molds were not detected by treatment. These results suggest that combined treatment of ClO₂/fumaric acid/blanching is the most effective method for improving microbiological safety of wild vegetables after harvest.

      • Development of a Prototype Road Cave-In Management Program

        Roads in Korea are equipped with PMS (Pavement Management System) computation data that runs on highway, national highway and municipal road. PMS is a program that selects and manages the road pavement optimal maintenance alternative as a indicator of the road pavement structural and functional performance. PMS is a system that has been developed for the primary purpose of maintaining the structural performance of road pavement, and so far does not include any indicators associated with the safety of road users. However, the road cave-in, which have recently become an issue on social networking sites, mass-media, and other issues, should pose systematically because it can make a safety risk to road users, and in particular lead to the structural and functional failure of the PMS program in view of the road pavement. Accordingly, this research has developed a practical use case for developing an integrated road cave-in management program based on the results of various studies on the exploration, analysis, assessment and handling of the existing road cave-in in Korea.

        Human Herpesvirus 6 Meningitis in a Neonatal Case

        Incidence of human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) infection in the neonatal period has been reported in few cases. HHV-6, commonly responsible for roseola, is known to establish infection during infancy and early childhood. A 14-day-old neonate, presented with a fever of 38.3℃, primarily due to an HHV-6 infection, was admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of his cerebrospinal fluid was positive for HHV-6. Additionally, serology for HHV-6 PCR was positive. We believe that HHV-6 can cause infection in febrile newborn infants.

        The use of complementary and alternative medicine in children with common neurologic diseases

        Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a phrase used to describe additional health care methods such as mind/body practices and natural products not regarded as treatments by conventional medicine. The use of CAM in children with common neurologic diseases is more frequent than its use in healthy children (24%-78% vs. 12%). However, less than half of patients report such use to their physicians. The preferred modalities of CAM vary in different countries due to their different cultures and traditions. The most common factor significantly associated with the use of CAM is parental CAM use in most studies. The frequency of the use of CAM in children and adults with neurologic diseases is similar, and both rates are higher than the rates in those without these conditions. The preferred modalities of CAM in adults are diverse, and megavitamins and mind/body therapy (prayer and chiropractic care) are included. The most common factor significantly associated with the use of CAM in adults with neurologic diseases is high educational level. Physicians need to be concerned with patients' use of CAM and provide correct information about CAM so that patients may make the right decisions. Further study is needed to determine the evidence-based efficacy of CAM use in children with common neurologic diseases.

        Nonfatal injuries in Korean children and adolescents, 2007–2018

        Background: Injury is the leading cause of death or disability in children and adolescents. Rates of deaths from injuries have recently declined, but studies of the occurrence of nonfatal injuries are lacking.Purpose: This study aimed to investigate nonfatal injuries in children and adolescents younger than 20 years based on data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey, 2007–2018.Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted to determine whether children and adolescents had experienced an injury requiring a hospital visit in the previous year. We investigated each injury’s risk factors and characteristics.Results: Of a total of 21,598 children and adolescents, 1,748 (weighted percentage, 8.1%) experienced one or more injuries in the previous year. There was no yearly difference in the proportion of injuries experienced. Among the male subjects, 10.0% had an injury experience; among the female participants, 6.1% had an injury experience (P<0.001). The highest rate was 9.0% in children aged 1–4 years. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, male sex; having an urban residence; having restricted activity due to visual, hearing, or developmental impairment; and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder were significant risk factors for injury experience. The characteristics of up to 3 injuries per patient were investigated, and 1,951 injuries were analyzed. Falls and slips accounted for 34.9%, collisions for 34.1%, and motor vehicle accidents for 11.3% of the total injuries. Ninety-six percent of injuries were unintentional, 20% caused school absences, and 10% required hospitalization.Conclusion: Among Korean children and adolescents, 8.1% experienced injuries at least once a year with no significant differences in incidence over the past 12 years. Greater attention and effort to prevent injuries are needed.
