According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the health indicators and nutritional status of North Korean children have improved steadily since 2010. However, malnutrition remains a serious condition, with 19.1% of children stunted. in addition, although the nutritional status of North Korean refugee children has gradually improved since they settled in South Korea, a rapid increase in obesity rates has put them under a double burden of malnutrition and obesity. For the health of North Korean children who are at risk because of the recent rapid increase in coronavirus disease 2019 cases in North Korea, maternal and child health experts should work together to request immediate humanitarian assistance from the international community and the South Korean government. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop a maternal and child health program in preparation for the resumption of inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation in the future.

The Association Between the Socioeconomic Status and Thyroid Cancer Prevalence; Based on the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2011

The incidence of thyroid cancer has recently increased in most industrialized countries, including Korea. To date, few studies have examined the association between thyroid cancer and socioeconomic status (SES). The current study was based on data collected from a total of 12,276 subjects (5,277 men and 6,999 women) by the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) between 2010 and 2011. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that older age (odds ration [OR], 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00-1.05), being female (OR, 8.16; 95%CI, 2.99-22.24), being overweight (OR, 1.04; 95%CI, 1.01-1.06), monthly household income (OR, 3.27; 95%CI, 1.16-9.20 for medium-highest household income vs lowest household income; OR, 3.30; 95%CI, 1.16-9.34 for highest household income vs lowest household income), educational level (OR, 2.74; 95%CI, 1.16-6.46 for 10-12 yr vs <7 yr) and alcohol consumption (OR, 1.89; 95%CI 1.08-3.32) were significant risk factors for thyroid cancer. Our results indicate that the recent increase in thyroid cancer is attributable to better early detection rather than to any increase in actual prevalence.

경추 질환으로 잘못 진단된 고관절염: 증례 보고

연구 계획: 증례보고. 목적: 경추 병변으로 잘못 진단된 고관절 질환 사례를 보고한다. 선행 연구문헌의 요약: 고관절 및 무릎 골관절염은 일반적으로 노인 환자에서 보행 장애를 초래한다. 일반적으로 진단은 쉽지만 증상이 모호하고 중복될수 있으므로 임상의는 감별 진단에서 척추 병변을 고려해야 한다. 보행 장애는 경추 척수병증의 주요 증상으로, 느리고 넓은 범위의 운동성 보행으로 나타난다. 대상 및 방법: 73세 남성이 보행 장애와 양측 허벅지 방사통으로 입원했다. 본원 내원 1년 전 다른 병원에서 경추 척수병증 진단을 받고 경추 유합술을 받았다. 그러나 불안정한 보행 패턴을 보였고, 허리에서 시작된 간헐적인 통증과 함께 양측 사타구니와 무릎으로 방사통을 경험했다. 초기 자기공명영상(MRI) 검사 결과 C4-5-6 레벨에서 추간판 탈출로 인한 협착증이 발견되었다. 1년 추적 MRI에서 C4-5-6 레벨에서 잘 감압되었다. 그 후 골반 일반 방사선 촬영과 고관절 MRI에서 심한 골관절염이 발견되어 양측 고관절 전치환술을 받았다. 결과: 고관절 수술 후 통증 및 보행 장애가 현저히 호전되는 것을 관찰할 수 있었다. 결론: 본 증례에서 보행 장애를 동반한 경추 척수병증의 증상은 상지 증상이 거의 없는 환자의 주요 증상이었으며, 임상의는 이 상태가 고관절 또는 무릎병리로 오진 될 수 있다는 사실을 염두에 두어야 한다. 약칭 제목: 경추 병변으로 오진단된 고관절 질환 Study design: Case report. Objectives: To report a case of hip disease that was misdiagnosed as a cervical spine lesion. Summary of Literature Review: Hip and/or knee osteoarthritis (OA) commonly results in gait impairment in elderly patients. Although the diagnosis is usually straightforward, clinicians should consider spinal lesions in the differential diagnosis because the symptoms may often be ambiguous and can overlap. Gait impairment is a primary symptom of cervical spondylotic myelopathy that manifests with a slow and wide-based ataxic gait. Materials and Methods: A 73-year-old man was admitted with gait disturbance and pain radiating to his bilateral thighs. He was diagnosed with cervical myelopathy and underwent cervical fusion surgery at another hospital 1 year prior to presentation. However, he showed an antalgic gait pattern and he experienced intermittent pain originating at the lower back with radiation into the bilateral groins and knees. Initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed herniated intervertebral disc-induced stenosis at the C4-5-6 levels. One-year follow-up MRI revealed well-decompressed fusion at the C4-5-6 levels. Plain radiography of the pelvis and MRI of the hip joint revealed severe osteoarthritis, and he underwent bilateral total hip replacement arthroplasty. Results: The patient reported significant improvement in pain and gait impairment postoperatively. Conclusions: In the present case, the presentation of cervical spondylotic myelopathy accompanied by gait disturbance was the patient’s main symptom, together with few upper extremity symptoms. Clinicians should be mindful of the possibility that this condition may be misdiagnosed as hip or knee pathology.

흰목이버섯 대량생산을 위한 용기내 재배 최적화 연구

The stromatal forms of T. fuciformis and the mycelia of Hypoxylon sp. were collected. The DNA sequence in the ITS region of the 5.8S ribosomal genes of isolated strain KG103 was very similar to that of T. fuciformis AF042409 with a homology of over 98% in the EMBL/GenBank database through BLAST searching. A second isolate, No KG201, one of the symbiotic strains for cultivating T. fuciformis also exhibited high homology with Annulohhypoxylon stygium AJ390406. Potato Dextrose Medium exhibited the best mycelial growth of 14 ㎜/14 days and 85 ㎜/14 days for T. fuciformis and its symbiotic fungi, respectively. Optimum culture conditions for the micelial growth were pH 5 at 25℃. For the optimization of artificial cultivation of T. fuciformis in bottle with sawdust medium, several conditions such as type of sawdust, supplements, pH, moisture content, and incubation temperature were investigated. T. fuciformis and symbiotic fungi showed fast mycelial growth on corn cob media (77 and 52%) followed by oak tree sawdust and cotton seed meal. The optimal temperature for mycelial growth of T. fuciformis and symbiotic fungi on corn cob media was 25 ℃ at 55% of moisture content.

Improvement of formability for fabricating thin continuously corrugated structures in sheet metal forming process

A stamping process is widely used for fabricating various sheet metal parts for vehicles, airplanes, and electronic devices by the merit of low processing cost and high productivity. Recently, the use of thin sheets with a corrugated structure for sheet metal parts has rapidly increased for use in energy management devices, such as heat exchangers, separators in fuel cells, and many others. However, it is not easy to make thin corrugated structures directly using a single-step stamping process due to their geometrical complexity and very thin thickness. To solve this problem, a multi-step stamping (MSS) process that includes a heat treatment process to improve formability is proposed in this work: the sequential process is the initial stamping, heat treatment, and final shaping. By the proposed method, we achieved successful results in fabricating thin corrugated structures with an average thickness of 75 μm and increased formability of about 31% compared to the single-step stamping process. Such structures can be used in a plate-type heat exchanger requiring low weight and a compact shape.

Milia are small, superficial keratin cysts believed to be derived from the pilosebaceous follicle, which arise most commonly on the cheeks and eyelids. We report a case of milia occurring on the vulva in a 70-year-old woman, who had multiple dome-shaped, 1 to 2 mm sized, yellowish papules. The histologic section showed small intradermal cysts connected with the vellus hair follicle by an epithelial pedicle. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of milia occurring on the vulva without coexistence of other dermatosis in the Korean dermatologic literatures.
