<P> The world energy crisis and the universal interest in comfort buildings are not only leading the thriving Passive House and Nearly Zero Energy House strategies but also encouraging the development of higher performance HVAC systems and alternative energy sources for occupants and sensible energy consumption. However, household appliances have been used to control the indoor environment such as humidifiers, dehumidifiers and air cleaners are became popular, occupants have come to rely on these appliances heavily and are overusing energy on indoor environment manage easily and quickly. In addition, the intense air tightness of current residential buildings makes possible to reduce harmful outdoor conditions but has made the indoor environment isolated from the outdoors. As well, climate change due to global warming and the urban heat island effect have broken the natural bond between humans and the environment. As high-rise, air tight buildings have become the most common residential building type in South Korea, occupants in high-rise residential buildings inevitably lose the chances to have the natural environment by the change of season to feel the warm sunlights of spring and the dry leafy smell on an autumn breeze. In this sense, regional weather data was analysed to establish comfort residential building strategies that commune with nature and overcome seasonal climate hindrances. </P>

Acute toxicity on the water extract of Mori Fructus was examined in male and female mice. The water extract of Mori Fructus was orally administered at a dose of 5 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg and 2,000 mg/kg and had been observed for two weeks. No mortality and abnormal clinical signs were shown for the observation period. At the terminal sacrifice, there were no difference in net body weight gain, organ weight and gross pathological findings among the groups treated with different doses of the water extract of Mori Fructus. The results suggested that under the condition employed in this study LD_50would be more than 2,000 mg/kg. All the data obtained the experiments lead to the water extract of Mori Fructus should have very low acute toxicity.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship among subjective health status, mental health, and cancer stigma of long-term cancer survivors after gastric surgery. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 135 cancer survivors visiting the family medicine clinic of a tertiary hospital were surveyed. Data were collected from March 1 to May 31, 2017. Using the questionnaire, subjective health status, mental health, and cancer stigma were measured and analyzed. Results: The mean scores for subjective health status, stress, and cancer stigma were 80.16, 2.97 and 1.59 respectively. Anxiety and depression rates were 37.1% and 28.9% respectively. Cancer stigma was negatively correlated with subjective health status (r=-.18, p=.036) and positive association with anxiety (r=.23, p=.009), depression (r=.20, p=.023), and stress (r=.21, p=.017). Conclusion: In this study, long-term cancer survivors’ subjective health status, mental health, and cancer stigma were low and these variables were significantly associated. In order to improve the quality of life of long-term gastric cancer survivors, it is necessary to actively evaluate anxiety, depression, stress, and cancer stigma. The appropriate psychosocial care interventions developed through repeated research of survivors of long-term cancer should be continued.

HAE series (HAE 01 - 06), are the mixtures of medicinal plants; Lonicerae Folium et Caulis (Lonicera japonica), Scutellariae Radix (Scutellaria baicalensis), Adenophorae Radix (Adenophora triphylla var. japonica), Polygonati Oddorati Rhizoma (Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum), Platycodi Radix (Platycodon grandiflorum), Liriopis seu Ophiopogonis Tuber (Liriope platyphylla). HAE 06 showed the significant antitussive effect in HAE series. HAE 04, 05, and 06 increased the effect of expectorant measured by secretion of phenol red in rats. All tested HAE series were observed to have the antioxidant activity determined by the scavenging activity. HAE 01, 03 and 06 were significantly reduced the production of nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) increased by LPS. HAE 06 was selected based on the results and done further experiments. HAE 06 inhibited the number of coughing induced by citric acid in dose dependent manner. HAE 06 effectively increased the effect of expectorant. HAE 06 exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of NO and TNF-α. In addition, HAE 06 significantly suppressed inducible Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Especially HAE 06 has the highest effect in alleviating the respiratory symptoms. Moreover, the enhancement antioxidant activity and reduction inflammation partly were attributed to it. HAE 06 may become the promising candidate for the treatment of respiratory symptom in the future.

Acute toxicity of standardized extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge was examined using male and female ICR mice. Mice were treated with standardized extract the intragastrically at 5 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg or 2,000 mg/kg and observed for two weeks. At the doses used, no mortality or abnormal clinical signs in animals were shown during at the observation period. Also there was no difference in net body weight gain, gross pathological findings at the terminal sacrifice among the groups mice treated with different doses of the test substance. The results suggested that acute oral toxicity of standardized extract of S. miltiorrhiza in mice is very low at the conditions employed in this study.

This study aimed to identify and elucidate the mechanism underlying the protective effect of tricin-enriched Zizania latifolia (Z. latifolia) extract (ETZL) against free fatty acid (FFA)-induced lipid accumulation in vitro and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by a high-fat diet and fructose diet (HFD/F) in vivo. ETZL treatment significantly lowered body weight gain and decreased adipose tissue, lipid, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in HFD/F-fed mice. ETZL acted on phosphorylated acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and anti-peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) by activating the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and inhibiting sterol regulatory element-binding proteins-1 (SREBP)/fatty acid synthase (FAS) signaling to inhibit de novo adipogenesis and increase fatty acid oxidation. In addition, treatment with ETZL increased nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) levels to activate the antioxidant pathway. FFA-induced oxidative stress and fatty acid accumulation in HepG2 cells confirmed the improvement in fat accumulation through the AMPK and Nrf2 pathway activities of ETZL. These results suggest that ETZL ameliorates NAFLD by regulating lipid metabolism and defending against oxidative stress via AMPK-dependent pathways.
