A previously healthy 44-year-old woman who was diagnosed as having dermatomyositis suddenly developed severe dyspnea while being in the state of improved condition of muscle weakness. Interstitial lung disease was found on high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). In spite of the treatment with the immune-modulating agent (high dose steroid, cyclophosphamide, immunoglubulin and cyclosporine), her condition deteriorated further and rapidly, leading to death. More intensive agent such as FK506 would be necessary in those cases of dermatomyositis-related interstitial lung disease that have poor prognostic factors.

By investigating Damien Hirst’s 2017 exhibition Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, this paper critically reconsider the way in which this exhibition is embedded in his perpetual interest in belief. While claiming that this exhibition displays treasures salvaged from an ancient wreck, Hirst also pulls out such issues as justified belief, history, God, and religion. His artistic integration of narratives and images results in deconstructing our justified belief systems. Considering the epistemic confusion that the exhibition brings forth, it is not easy to accept it simply as a fictional representation or amusement. This paper looks into diverse assessments on the exhibition and moves on to analyze its critical issues ingrained in his belief system. This paper contends that Hirst’s persistent concern with religion is embedded in this exhibition. He takes ancient religious myths down to the level of fictional narratives, thereby validating narratives as myths. Then he fabricates his own narrative as myths, which would be a religious origin. This exhibition not only provokes challenging questions on the ontology of art. But it also promotes Hirst himself as the narrative creator while conforming to the commodity aesthetic geared to boost sales. The crux of Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable is that Hirst presumably spells the viewer into believing his art-religion.
