      • Co-production of 3-hydroxypropionic acid and 1,3-propanediol using glycerol by Klebsiella pneumoniae J2B: Reduction of by-products accumulation

        Microbial 3-HP production from glycerol requires glycerol dehydratase (GDHt) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). GDHt requires coenzyme B12 and ALDH requires NAD+ as cofactors for the production of 3-HP from glycerol. The imbalance between GDHt and ALDH activities cause the accumulation of toxic intermediate, 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA). As a solution to these problems, co-production of 1,3-PDO along with 3-HP has been suggested. 1,3-PDO production could regenerate NAD+ and utilize 3-HPA, thus avoiding 3-HPA accumulation and also facilitate the process to be performed under microaerobic conditions. But acetate was produced as major metabolite, which is very toxic to the cells. Therefore, in this study, we attempted the down-regulation of glycolytic pathway and disruption of byproducts formation pathway. We also attempted to operate TCA cycle/glyoxylate shunt to reduce the carbon traffic at pyruvate node.

        훌라후프를 이용한 체중이동훈련이 뇌졸중 환자의 체중이동변화와 보행에 미치는 영향: 단면 예비연구

        PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of weight shift training with Hula Hoop on weight shift change and gait in stroke patients. METHODS: Ten stroke patients were enrolled in this study, and randomly divided into 2 groups. The study group underwent weight shift training with Hula Hoop, while the control group received general physical therapy that included weight shift training. All the studies were performed over a period of 4 weeks. Before and after the intervention, plantar pressure and performance in the 10 m walk test (10MWT) were assessed. Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used to compare the change from before to after the intervention in each group. The differences between the study and control groups were analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: After 4 weeks of intervention, the change in weight shift and performance in the 10MWT from before to after the experiment showed no statistical significance (p>.05). In addition, the comparison between the groups showed no significance in terms of weight-shift change, and performance in the 10MWT (p>.05). CONCLUSION: Although the difference was not statistically significant, the degree of improvement was similar to that attained with the conventional exercise treatment related to weight- shift training. During the course of the treatment, the patients received feedback through repeated training by themselves. Weight-shift training with Hula Hoop would be effective in improving the walking ability and weight-shifting on the paralyzed side of stroke patients. In the future, the effectiveness of this training would need to be validated.

        나노기술 관련 사회·윤리적 쟁점 맥락에서 개인-집단중심성향에 따른 대학생들의 논증담화 분석

        This study aimed to explore the patterns of college students’ dialogic argumentation in the context of nanotechnology issues, and to compare these patterns based on their idiocentrism and allocentrism. Nanotechnology represents the characteristics of socioscientific issues in that it is widely used in various fields, but at the same time, it includes the likelihood of negative effects. 33 college students who enrolled in science-related course participated in this study. Participants were divided into idiocentric groups and allocentric groups based on the INDCOL scores, and they participated in group discussions on nanotechnology. All discussions were audiotaped and analyzed using the framework of discourse clusters and schemes. Results showed that participating students engaged in dialogic argumentation with the process of exchanging of individual perspectives, exploration of different perspectives, and coordination and negotiation; specifically, they spent most of their time in exploring different values and perspectives regarding nanotechnology. Results also indicated the differences in discourse clusters and discourse schemes between idiocentric and allocentric groups. Allocentric groups more often negotiated to settle on a group decision than idiocentric groups did, and discourse schemes in their negotiation process were slightly different from the ones in idiocentric groups. 이 연구는 나노기술과 관련된 사회윤리적 쟁점 맥락에서 이루어진 대학생의 논증담화의 특성을 개인-집단중심성향에 따라 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 나노기술은 다양한 분야에서 활용되고 있으나 그에 못지않게 위험성을 내포하고 있어 과학 기술과 관련된 사회쟁점의 특징을 보여주는 주제이다. 이 연구에서는 A대학의 교양수업을 수강한 대학생 33명을 대상으로 개 인중심성향과 집단중심성향에 따라 구분하고, 나노기술과 관련된 사회윤리적 쟁점 맥락에서 진행한 논증담화를 담화클러스터와 담화요소에 따라 분석하였다. 연구결과, 전반적으로 대학생들은 나노기술과 관련한 논증을 진행할 때 본인의 입장을 교환하고 자 료를 탐색함으로써 의견을 조율하는 방식으로 참여하였으며, 그 중에서도 나노기술의 혜택과 잠재적인 위험성을 탐색하는 데 많 은 시간과 노력을 투자하였다. 이때 개인중심성향집단과 집단중심성향집단은 담화클러스터와 담화요소의 연결고리에 있어 차이 가 있었다. 집단중심성향집단은 개인중심성향집단에 비해 구성원 간의 의견을 조정하고 합의하는 담화클러스터가 길게 등장하 였으며, 의견조정 및 합의 클러스터 내부에 등장하는 담화요소와 그 연결고리의 모습 또한 다소 차이가 있는 것으로 드러났다.

        물리전공 대학생의 양자역학 개념이해 및 확신도의 성차 분석

        This study aims to investigate the gender differences of college students concerning the levels of their understandings on the six major concepts in Quantum Mechanics (QM) and the degree of certainty of their knowledge. For this purpose, 182 physics major college students responded to the revised Quantum Mechanics Conceptual Survey (QMCS) and the Scale for Degree of Certainty on their Knowledge (SDCK). In the results, male students presented statistically-significant higher mean scores on both the QMCS and the SDCK. Specifically, female students held insufficient knowledge of ‘wave-particle duality’ and the ‘wave function’. In addition, a significant correlation between the scores on the QMCS and the SDCK was observed in both gender groups. The students presented decent levels of understanding on the concept of ‘quantization of states’ with a high level of certainty whereas they struggled to understand the concepts of ‘wave-particle duality’, ‘tunneling effect’ and ‘Schr¨odinger equation’ with a low degree of certainty. 양자역학은 확률론적 관점에 대한 이해와 고급 수학 기술이 요구된다는 점에서 학생들이 이해하는 데 어려움을 겪는 학문 중 하나로 여겨져 왔다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 양자역학의 본성이 성차를 야기할 수 있을 것이라는 가정 하에, 대학생들의 양자역학 개념이해와 그에 대한 확신도에 나타나는 성차를 분석하고자 하였다. 물리전공 대학생 182명이 양자역학 기본개념 검사와 확신도 조사에 참여한 결과, 남학생이 여학생보다 양자역학 개념에 대한 이해와 그에 대한 확신도 모두 높은 것으로 드러났다. 특히 여학생들은 남학생에 비해 파동-입자 이중성 및 파동함수의 특징에 대한 이해가 부족하였다. 또한 양자역학 개념이해도와 그에 대한 확신도는 남녀 집단 모두에서 유의한 상관관계가 있었다. 본 연구에 참여한 대학생들은 에너지 양자화에 대한 이해가 높고 그에 대한 확신도도 높은 반면, 파동-입자 이중성과 터널링 효과, 슈뢰딩거방정식과 관련된 개념에서는 상대적으로 낮은 정답률과 확신도를 보였다.

        ENACT 프로그램 참여를 통한 중·고등학생의 과학기술자의 사회적 책임에 대한 인식 및 과학기술 관련 사회쟁점에 대한 태도 탐색

        본 연구에서는 중·고등학생을 대상으로 ENACT 프로그램을 적용하여, 이들의 과학기술자의 사회적 책임에 대한 인식과 과학기술 관련 사회쟁점에 대한 이해를 탐색해보았다. 중·고등학생 40명을 대상으로 한 학기간 ENACT 프로그램을 도입하였으며, 과학기술자의 사회적 책임에 대한 인식, 과학기술 관련 사회쟁점에 대한 태도, 역량, 참여의향을 묻는 검사도구 응답인 양적 자료와 반성적 글쓰기인 질적 자료를 함께 이용하여 학생들의 인식 향상을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 본 연구에 참여한 학생들은 ENACT 프로그램을 통해 과학기술자가 갖추어야 할 사회적 책임에 대한 인식과 SSI에 대한 이해가 높아졌으며, 쟁점에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 문제를 해결하는 역량과 참여의향 또한 높아진 것으로 드러났다. 특히 학생들은 과학기술 관련 사회쟁점을 다각도로 탐색해보고 본인만의 해결방안을 도출하여 실천에 옮기는 과정을 통해 과학기술자들이 보다 적극적으로 사회문제를 해결할 필요가 있음을 깨닫게 되었으며, 스스로도 과학기술 관련 사회문제 해결에 관심을 갖고 참여할 의지를 표명하는 모습을 보였다. 또한 학생들은 이해관계자 지도와 퓨처스휠을 통해 쟁점을 깊숙이 탐색하고 미래를 다각도로 예상해봄으로써, 과학기술이 양면성을 지니고 있으며 그에 따라 미래에 바람직한 방향으로 나아갈 수 있도록 관심과 노력이 필요하다는 것을 인식하게 되었다. In this study, we implemented the ENACT program on secondary school students and examined their understanding of socioscientific issues and their views of social responsibility of STEM professionals. A total of 40 secondary school students participated in the ENACT program over the semester. Quantitative data sources such as Views of Social Responsibility of Scientists and Engineers and Perceptions on SSIs, and qualitative data including reflective essay, were collected for an analysis. The results showed that participating students presented statistically significant improvement in their views of the social responsibility as well as their perceptions of SSIs after the program. Reflective essays supported that students perceived the importance of social responsibility and problem-solving of STEM professionals and they also showed an improvement in their willingness to act for resolving the issues by exploring the views of various stakeholders surrounding the issues and anticipating the future consequences. Additionally, students also realized the ambivalence of science and technology and understood the necessity of putting efforts on desirable future by visualizing stakeholder map and futures wheel.

      • Co-production of 3-hydroxypropionic acid and 1,3-propandiol by recombinant Klebsiella pneumoniae

        3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) production from glycerol has gained much attention due to the importance of 3-HP as platform chemical. 3-HP production is composed of two reactions i.e. conversion of glycerol to 3-HPA oxidation to 3-HP. Klebsiella pneumoniae, one of the candidates for 3-HP production, has advantage of natural synthesis of B<sub>12</sub> under anaerobic condition. However, further reaction of 3-HPA to 3-HP involves the reduction of NAD<sup>+</sup> and consequently NAD<sup>+</sup> regeneration is very important for efficient production of 3-HP. On the other hand, production of 1,3-PDO by NADH-dependent oxidoredcutase of K. pneumoniae has been studied extensively. Hence, in this study, we tried co-production of 3-HP and 1,3-PDO using K. pneumoniae mutants and studied the effect of various environmental factors and genetic backgrounds on co-production yields change in K. pneumoniae.

        과학기술자의 사회적 책임에 대한 이공계 대학생의 인식 탐색

        This study aimed to investigate the views of STEM college students on the social responsibility of scientists and engineers. A total of 660 students in STEM majors at several Korean universities participated in the study. We assessed social responsibility among college students in STEM majors using the VSRoSE scale, which taps into eight different domains of social responsibility: Concern for human welfare and safety (HUMAN), Concern for environmental sustainability (ENVIR), Consideration of societal risks and consequences (CONSEQ), Consideration of societal risks and consequences (CONSEQ), Consideration of societal needs and demands (NEEDS), Pursuit of the common good (COMGOOD), Civic engagement and services (CIVIC), Communication with the public (COMMU), and Participation in policy decision-making (POLICY). Group differences in social responsibility by gender, majors, and years in school were examined. Mean scores in HUMAN, ENVIR, and CONSEQ were relatively higher than those in NEEDS, COMGOOD, CIVIC, COMMU, and POLICY. Cluster analysis identified five different groups with similar patterns of social responsibility scores. In addition to two groups with overall high and low scores across all eight factors of VSRoSE, three additional groups with different combinations of high and low scores in different factors were identified. The results indicated that students with low social responsibility are not homogeneous and these heterogeneous sub-groups of students will need tailored interventions highlighting different factors of social responsibility that they lack. Pedagogical implications of social responsibility for education were discussed.
