Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers and it has the highest mortality of all forms of cancers. Although surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are routinely used for the treatment of lung cancer treatment, little progress has been made in the treatment of this condition over the past 20 years. The histological subtype of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) accounts for approximately 30% of all lung cancer patients. Spontaneous regression of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCL) is an extremely rare phenomenon. Spontaneous regression of cancer (SR) is defined as a complete or partial, temporary or permanent disappearance of all or at least some the relevant parameters of soundly diagnosed malignant disease without any medical treatment or with treatment that is considered inadequate to produce the resulting regression.

Spontaneous regression of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) was reported over the last century. However, there are no reports on spontaneous regression of mRCC by talc pleurodesis. A 43-year-old man who underwent left nephrectomy by RCC visited emergency room with headache and hallucination. Tumor was metastasized to brain, lung, and pleura accompanied by malignant pleural effusion. Talc pleurodesis by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was performed to treat malignant pleural effusion. After 7 months without specific chemotherapy, pulmonary lesions of mRCC gradually regressed. We thought that this phenomenon appears as an immunologic response of talc pleurodesis. We herein present a rare case of spontaneous regression of mRCC following talc pleurodesis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of spontaneous regression in mRCC following talc pleurodesis.

Actor’s Speech Regression for Character Design in Contemporary Korean Cinema

비유창성(Disfluency)은 자연스러운 발화시 일관성 있는 언어 구조의 순조로운 흐름을 방해하는 자발적인 말 수정 등으로 대화체의 대표적인 특징이다. 본 논문의 목적은 현대 한국 코미디 영화에서 나타나는 배우 대사의 비유창성 비율 증감이 영화 속 인물의 감정 변화에 따라 어떠한 변화 양상을 보이는가를 연구하는 것이다. 더 나아가 비유창성 비율과 영화 캐릭터 디자인이 어떠한 상관관계를 가지는 가를 연구하는 것이다. 이러한 연구를 위해 넘버3(1997)에서 송강호(조필 역) 의 대사를 비유창성의 특질들과 함께 전사해 비유창성 비율을 정량적으로 분석한다. 본 연구에서는 연구 목적과 연구 대상의 특징을 고려해 비유창성들을 묵음 구간, 잡음, 간투어 그리고 반복/수정 발화로 구분 한다. 배우가 대사를 구사할 때 이러한 비유창성 비율을 인위적으로 높이는 것을 대사의 퇴행(speech regression) 이라고 정의한다. 코미디 영화 대사의 퇴행 현상은 한 인물의 신분을 드러내고 그가 처한 상황을 코믹하게 표현하게 해주어 영화의 표현주의적인 캐릭터를 디자인하고 내러티브의 흐름을 표현하는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 대사의 퇴행에 대한 이런 인지 과학적 접근은 대사에 대한 기본 정의를 음성학적으로 확장시켜 과학과 내러티브를 연계하는 연구라는 의의를 가지며 이와 같은 시도들은 영화 스타일 연구의 새로운 층위들을 창출하게 할 것이다. In this paper, for actor’s spontaneous speech in movie, we analyze the transcriptions of conversational speech in movie, and then classify the characteristics of conversational speech in character design aspect. Even though well-trained movie actor can be fluent, they intentionally make disfluency[DF] rates in their spontaneous speech high for expressionistic character design. After reviewing cinematic factors that have been argued to affect actor’s DF rates, author examined DF rates after transcribing actor Song Kang-ho’s speech in No. 3(1997). These cinematic factors included: movie genre, actor role. Author defined actor's intentional control of raising DF rates in actor speech as Speech Regression phenomenon. It is a part of actor’s method acting for designing a character in a genre movie like comedy movie based on the comic pleasures of regression. This is the process of individualization. Reflecting these features of the speech itself, and we then recognize what kind of acoustic feature need for expressionistic character design and predict how much DF rates is produced by actor in terms of his emotional state. It finally obtain more extended cognitive horizon.

Self-regression of Kaposi`s sarcoma is rare with the exception of the iatrogenic immunosuppressive type. No cases of classic type Kaposi`s sarcoma showing spontaneous regression have been reported in the Korean dermatologic literature. We report a case of classic type of Kaposi`s sarcoma in a 69-year-old man which followed a clinical course of spontaneous regression. He presented with multiple asymptomatic beefy red papules and nodules scattered on both cheeks and upper extremities during a state of increase in the number of skin lesions at the initial visit. He had no history of immunosuppressive treatment and the laboratory findings were unremarkable. An anti-HIV antibody test was negative. A histopathologic examination revealed typical findings of Kaposi`s sarcoma and positive staining with CD31 and D2-40. HHV-8 DNA was detected in a biopsy specimen. Without any specific treatment, the skin lesions healed without leaving any complications after 15 months, and did not show any evidence of recurrence during the ensuing 5 years.

Meningioma With Partial and Spontaneous Regression of Peritumoral Edema on Long-Term Follow Up

Spontaneous regression of meningioma is rarely observed. We report a one person of an incidentally diagnosed meningioma with a spontaneous regression. The 73-year-old female patient without symp- toms showed the right sphenoid meningioma with peritumoral edema. The meningioma was inciden- tally diagnosed and followed up by MRI for 10 years. The tumor shrank with a decrease of edema on T2 MRI. The initial volume of 58.59 cm3, regressed to 37.16 cm3.

There have been many reports about lumbar synovial cysts, discussing surgical or interventional treatment methods. Howe- ver, there have been few reports about spontaneous regression of the cyst. We report a case of a lumbar synovial cyst that regressed spontaneously. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a spontaneously regressed lumbar synovial cyst in Korea. The patient was a 59-year-old man who presented with a 6-month history of insidious pain onset in the lower back and right buttock. Upon MRI of the lumbar spine, grade 1 spondylolisthesis was revealed at the L4-5 level. An about 6mm-sized extradural cyst was detected at the medial side of the right L4-5 facet joint. His symptoms were disappeared upon facet block with 0.5% bupivacaine bilaterally at the L4-5 level. Six years later, he revisited our clinic due to low back pain and left leg radiating pain. Upon lumbar MRI, aggravated L4-5 spondylolisthesis with left-side disc protrusion was observed. However, we could not find the synovial cyst around the right L4-5 facet joint that had existed 6 years prior. The patient was treated conservatively because he refused surgery.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rapidly growing malignant neuroendocrine tumor with a high rate of recurrence and metastasis for which wide excision is recommended. About 10 cases of spontaneous regression have been reported in the world. We report a case of Merkel cell carcinoma which showed spontaneous regression. The patient was a 68-year-old woman with a two-month history of a rapidly enlarging dusky red tumor on her right cheek. Microscopically, the tumor cells were uniform with round to oval shaped nucleus and scanty cytoplasm, and showed trabecular arrangement. Ultrastructually, dense core neurosecretory granules 100 to 200nm in diameter were found in the cytoplasm of tumor cells. As far as we know, this is the first case of the spontaneous regression of the tumor in the country. (Korean J Dermatol 2001;39 (7) 803-807)

Spontaneous regression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is extremely rare. We report a case of 67-year-old man having HBV-associated HCC with multiple lung metastases which regressed spontaneously. The patient had single liver mass and received surgical resection. The mass was confirmed as HCC histopathologically. Nine years after surgical resection, a 3.3 cm sized recurred HCC was detected on the resection margin in CT scan. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) was performed 3 times, and lung metastases developed thereafter. The patient received 2 more sessions of TACE, however, metastatic lung nodules were in progress very rapidly. We decided to stop TACE and followed the patient regularly without any anti-cancer treatment. Nine months after development of lung metastasis, the size and number of metastatic lung nodules decreased and were not detected anymore after 14 months. Serum alpha-fetoprotein levels also decreased to normal range and no viable tumor was noted in the liver. The patient is still alive 12 years after the first diagnosis of HCC and 16 months after lung metastasis developed. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2010;55:133-138)
