A 11-year-old intact male maltese dog with respiratory distress, cyanosis and coughing was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. Loud holosystolic murmur with a palpable precordial thrill was heard at the left apex region by auscultation. Left sided cardiac enlargement and mitral regurgitated flow were detected by thoracic radiography and echocardiography, respectively. Clinical signs were improved by treatment of diuretics, ACE inhibitor and pimobendan.
PROGRESS IN NUCLEAR FUEL TECHNOLOGY IN KOREA

During the last four decades, 16 Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) and 4 Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) have been constructed and operated in Korea, and nuclear fuel technology has been developed to a self-reliant state. At first, the PWR fuel design and manufacturing technology was acquired through international cooperation with a foreign partner. Then, the PWR fuel R&D by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has improved fuel technology to a self-reliant state in terms of fuel elements, which includes a new cladding material, a large-grained $UO_2$ pellet, a high performance spacer grid, a fuel rod performance code, and fuel assembly test facility. The MOX fuel performance analysis code was developed and validated using the in-reactor test data. MOX fuel test rods were fabricated and their irradiation test was completed by an international program. At the same time, the PWR fuel development by Korea Nuclear Fuel (KNF) has produced new fuel assemblies such as PLUS7 and ACE7. During this process, the design and test technology of fuel assemblies was developed to a self-reliant state. The PHWR fuel manufacturing technology was developed and manufacturing facility was set up by KAERI, independently from the foreign technology. Then, the advanced PHWR fuel, CANFLEX(CANDU Flexible Fuelling), was developed, and an irradiation test was completed in a PHWR. The development of the CANFLEX fuel included a new design of fuel rods and bundles.. The nuclear fuel technology in Korea has been steadily developed in many national R&D programs, and this advanced fuel technology is expected to contribute to a worldwide nuclear renaissance that can create solutions to global warming.

The authors attempted to analyse the factors influencing the mortality involved in aneurysm surgery based on 38 cases of intracranial surgery for anterior communicating aneurysms, and obtained the following conclusion. 1. The surgical results are much better when the aneurysm surgery is delayed over one week after the occurrence of aneurysmal rupture, if there is no evidence of intracerebral hematoma. Administration of a massive dosage of epsilon aminocaproic acid in the waiting period prior to aneurysm surgery seems to be effective for preventing recurrence of bleeding from the aneurysm. 2. The direction of the anterior communicating aneurysm should be clearly visualized on a cerebral angiogram so that the most effective aneurysmal approach can be selected in surgery. 3. Microsurgery and hypotension in aneurysm surgery minimize brain damage in the exposure of aneurysm and provide accurate isolation of the aneurysmal neck from the parent vessel in aneurysmal neck ligation. 4. Proximal ligation of the anterior cerebral artery is also an effective procedure to prevent recurrent hemorrhage from anterior communicating aneurysm.
규칙적인 유산소운동이 흰쥐골격근의 SOD 및 CS활성에 미치는 영향

The effects of regular endurance exercise on superoxide dismutase and citrate synthase activity for the soleus and extensor digitorum longus muscles in rats that underwent swimming training for 12 weeks were examined. The correlation between Mn-SOD activity and citrate synyhase activity of the soleus were also examined. Sixteen male rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: SC (sedentary control group) and ET (exercise trained). The blood glucose and total cholesterol level of ET group were significantly lower than those of SC group(p<0.05). The mitochondrial citrate synthase activity of the soleus muscle for the ET group was significantly higher than those for SC rats(p<0.05). However, the correlation between citrate synthase activity and Mn-SOD activity of the soleus was very low. For the conclusion, mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme activity showed low correlation with the endurance exercise performance. However, endurance exercise showed significant improvement in the biochemical indices related aerobic performance and mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme activity.

This study was conducted to invastigate the effect of everyday life stress level and temporary physical activity by the stress on stress-related hematologic indices. The subjects were 83 male older aged men and they were received a questionaire about everyday life stress level and temporary physical activity by the stress and collected whole blood after overnight fasting state. Obtained results were as follows: 1. CRP level CRP level of MS group was significantly increased compared to SS group(p<.05). However, CRP level between PA and NP was not significant difference. 2. Cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid level Cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid level of MS group was significantly increased compared to SS group(p<.05). However, Cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid level between PA and NP was not significant difference. 3. WBC counts WBC counts of MS group was significantly increased compared to SS group(p<.05). However, WBC counts between OP and PA was not significant difference. From these results, increased stress in everyday life aggravate blood components related cardiovascular risk factors and immune system. In addition, acute exercise for stress attenuation does not improve blood components related cardiovascular risk factors and immune system. In summary, regular exercise and optimal nutrition and rest will be attenuate cardiovascular risk factors and immune system.
Fish Distribution and Water Quality of Mountain Streams in the Jirisan National Park, Korea

Fish fauna of mountain streams in the Jirisan National Park area of S. Korea (total area: 440.45 $\textrm{km}^2$, height: 1,915 m) was investigated at 33 sites from May 1997 to September 1999. A total of 4,670 individuals of fishes were collected and classified into 30 species and 12 families. Zacco temmincki (relative abundance (RA), 63.9%) was found to be the most abundant inhabitant. Subdominant species were Pungtungia hem (RA 6.2%), Zacco platypus (RA 6.1 %) and Coreoleusiscus splendidus (RA 4.8%). Among the total species, 13 species were identified as the Korean endemic species (7 families, 17.2% of 802 individuals). Dominant Korean endemic species was C. splendidus (relative abundance endemics (RAE), 27.8%). Superiors were Coreoperca heizi (RAE 21.8%) and Liobagrus mediadiposalis (RAE 19.8%). One exotic species (Oncorhynchus mykiss, a site and 5 ind.) and translated species (Hypmesus niponensis, two sites and 174 ind.) were collected in this survey. The proportion of Korean endemic species in the park (43.3%) was higher than the average of Korean Peninsular (25.9%). From this study, we conclude that the Jirisan National Park area in Korea would be very important for fish diversity and conservation, especially for the Korean endemic and endangered species.

The popliteal artery damage is present to range from 1.6% to 64% of patients with knee dislocation, and it is crucial to evaluate vascular damage even if there are no prominent ischemic changes in the distal area. The injury of the popliteal artery by high-energy forces around the knee caused by a fall or traffic accident is a potentially limb-threatening complication in traumatic knee dislocation. The popliteal artery injury by blunt trauma has a high risk of limb amputation because the initial symptoms can show normal vascular circulation without urgent ischemia or obvious vascular injury signs. Since the collateral branches can delay the symptoms of decisive ischemia or pulseless extremity, the vascular damage is a major cause of limb amputation. In the present study, we describe a rare case of delayed diagnosis of popliteal artery injury after traumatic knee dislocation, requiring urgent limb revascularization surgery. After revascularization of the occluded popliteal artery, graft interposition was performed, and successful restoration was confirmed. This case illustrates that, even if ankle-brachial index >0.9 or equal pedal pulse to the uninjured extremity, serial vascular evaluation is required if there are soft signs such as diminished pulses, neurologic signs, or high-energy damage such as multiple ligament ruptures since delayed diagnosis of artery injury can be the major cause of limb amputation. The clinicians need to regard high-energy trauma such as multiple ligament rupture around the knee as a hard sign, and immediate computed tomography angiography can be helpful for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
동부 시베리아 에너지 개발에 대한 국내 철도 산업의 경제성 분석과 진출 방안 연구 : 동부 시베리아 철도 주변 지역을 중심

Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) has been recently rising to the surface as the world important issue with Trans-Korea Railway (TKR). This can change transportation means from sea to railway and enhance Korean international position through the North-east Asian economic cooperaton with Russia. In particular, when "Iron Silkroad" linking TKR is created, it can revitalize the underdeveloped East Russia and Far East"s economies and Korean railway can play a key role as the North-east Asian logistics center and exerts a powerful influence on them. In addition, Korean railway expects to obtain economic benefits accruing to various value-added businesses such as IT, tourism, especially, transportation business from the East Siberia, the world largest reserves of energy to Korea. This study tries to find economic value analysis and guidelines on strategies of Korean railway with international logistics base built in Khassan (Vladivostok contiguity region) through the development of energy deposited around east of TSR.
