Purpose: To analyze the data of patients who suffered trauma in a cultivator accident and visited the trauma center in rural Gyeongbuk Province. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and Korean Trauma Data Bank data of 120 patients who suffered cultivator-related traumas and visited the rural regional trauma center in Gyeongbuk Province from January to December 2015. Results: The age of the patients ranged from 35 to 96 years (mean, 70 years). Ninety-one (75.8%) patients were men, and twenty-nine (24.2%) were women. Most of the patients were in their 70s (46 men [50.5%] and 13 women [44.8%]). In total, 113 patients (94.1%) arrived at the regional trauma center by ground transport and 7 (5.9%) arrived by air transport. Ninety-eight patients (81.7%) were transported to the regional trauma center directly from the scene of the accident, and twenty-two (18.3%) were transferred from another medical institute. The mean time from the accident to arrival at the emergency department was 139 minutes, and only 46 patients (38.3%) arrived within 1 hour. Twelve (10.0%) patients died, including two deaths on arrival and two post- cardiopulmonary resuscitation deaths in the emergency department. All deaths were of male cultivator operators. The causes of death were shock (hypovolemic, traumatic, or septic), subdural hematoma (open), hemothorax, rhabdomyolysis, and pneumonia. Conclusions: As the government - led regional trauma center project is on process, it would be clinically important to summarize the initial outcome of cultivator injuries, which are characteristically found more in regional trauma centers in the rural area, and have high mortality. Based on this study, in the future, it will be necessary to follow up and analyze more number of patients and to construct accurate database about trauma cases related to cultivator in Gyeongbuk region.

<P>We have investigated the combined effect of tissue heterogeneity and its variation associated with geometric error in stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for lung cancer. The treatment plans for eight lung cancer patients were calculated using effective path length (EPL) correction and Monte Carlo (MC) algorithms, with both having the same beam configuration for each patient. These two kinds of plans for individual patients were then subsequently recalculated with adding systematic and random geometric errors. In the ordinary treatment plans calculated with no geometric offset, the EPL calculations, compared with the MC calculations, largely overestimated the doses to PTV by ∼21%, whereas the overestimation were markedly lower in GTV by ∼12% due to relatively higher density of GTV than of PTV. When recalculating the plans for individual patients with assigning the systematic and random geometric errors, no significant changes in the relative dose distribution, except for overall shift, were observed in the EPL calculations, whereas largely altered in the MC calculations with a consistent increase in dose to GTV. Considering the better accuracy of MC than EPL algorithms, the present results demonstrated the strong coupling of tissue heterogeneity and geometric error, thereby emphasizing the essential need for simultaneous correction for tissue heterogeneity and geometric targeting error in SBRT of lung cancer.</P><P>PACS numbers: 87.55.D, 87.55.kh, 87.53.Ly, 87.55.‐x</P>

Identification of Antiadipogenic Constituents of the Rhizomes of Anemarrhena asphodeloides

Three new phenolic compounds, (E)-4'-demethyl-6-methyleucomin (1), anemarcoumarin A (2), and anemarchalconyn (3), were isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the rhizomes of Anemarrhena asphodeloides, together with seven known compounds (4-10). The structures of the new compounds (1-3) were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data interpretation. Compound 3 exhibited a potent inhibitory effect against the differentiation of preadipocyte 3T3-L1 cells with an IC50 value of 5.3 microM.

한우 번식 실태 조사와 저수태 암소의 번식률 개선에 관한 연구

본 연구는 한우농가의 번식현황을 조사하여 기초 자료를 확보하고, 번식효율을 개선을 위하여 국내 7개 지역의 36개 농가를 대상으로 하였다. 한우를 사육하는 농가의 평균 연령은 55세, 번식우 전용 농가는 26.5%, 번식우와 비육우의 혼합 사육방법은 73.5% 이었다. 한우만을 사육하는 농가가 70.3%, 복합 영농형태는 29.7%로 조사 되었다. 번식우의 사육 규모는 2019년 89.4두, 2020년 91.5두로 나타났다. 가임 암소의 규모는 2019년에 약 51.2두, 2020년은 약 50두로 조사되었다. 백신처리 유·무에 따른 임신율에 조사에서 처리 그룹이 70.7%, 미처리 그룹은 51.8%를 보였으며(P<0.0001), 초발정 일령은 평균 8.9개월령, 초종부 일령은 13.9개월로 조사되었다. 저수태우를 대상으로 발정동기화후 임신율은 경산우 62.5%, 미경산우 69.6%로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과는 최근 2년간의 한우 농가 번식 현황을 제시하였고, 저수태우 번식 효율을 향상 시켜줄 수 있는 방안을 제시하여 농가 소득 증대에 기여할 것으로 사료된다. This survey was undertaken to investigate the breeding status and obtain basic data to help improve the breeding rate of cattle raised by Hanwoo farmers. The reproduction status survey was conducted in 36 farms located in 7 domestic regions. The average age of a farmer raising Korean beef was about 55 years. Survey of the reproduction method showed that 26.5% farmers followed only breed farming, whereas 73.5% applied complex breed farming. The ratios of full time Hanwoo breeding farm and complex farm were 70.3% and 29.7%. The size of management scale per farm was 89.4 and 91.5 heads for 2019 and 2020, respectively. The pregnancy rate was assessed according to the status of vaccine administered, and was determined to be 70.7% and 51.8% for vaccinated vs. unvaccinated cattle, respectively (p<0.0001). Months of first estrus and first mating were 8.9 and 13.9, respectively, with pregnancy rates being 62.5% and 69.6% for cow group and heifer group, respectively. This study represents the breeding status of Hanwoo during 2019 to 2020. Our results indicate improved reproduction rates for repeat breeder in Hanwoo cattle. We believe implementation of this method will contribute to increase income at Hanwoo cattle farms.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Additional sex comb-like1 (Asxl1) is known as a chromatin modulator that plays dual functions in transcriptional regulation depending on the cell type. Recent studies using <I>Asxl1</I> knockout mice revealed that Asxl1 is important for the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells, and the development of organs. Although we previously reported <I>Asxl1</I> as a Sox2 target gene, its function in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) remains largely unknown. For this purpose, we isolated ESCs from the blastocyst inner cell mass of <I>Asxl1</I> <SUP>−/−</SUP> mice. <I>Asxl1</I> deficiency in ESCs exhibited no effect on cell proliferation, expression of core pluripotent transcription factors, or alkaline phosphatase activity, suggesting dispensability of Asxl1 for self-renewal of ESCs. By contrast, the differentiation of <I>Asxl1</I> <SUP> <I>−/−</I> </SUP> ESCs was significantly affected as shown by size reductions of embryoid bodies accompanied with apoptosis, aberrant expression of differentiation genes, downregulation of bivalent neurogenesis genes, and abnormal axon formation in neurons. Overall, our findings indicated that Asxl1 played a critical role in regulating genes associated with neural differentiation without affecting self-renewal of mouse ESCs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>Asxl1</I> is dispensable for the maintenance of ESC self-renewal and pluripotency. </LI> <LI> <I>Asxl1</I> deficiency leads to defective EB formation. </LI> <LI> Differentiation-associated genes are dysregulated in <I>Asxl1</I>-deleted EBs. </LI> <LI> <I>Asxl1</I> is required for the proper morphology of neuronal axons. </LI> </UL> </P>
