To see how Hippens influenced the fashion industry, this thesis makes a study of the individual characteristics and forms of self-expression within that group and futruter to discover the link between hippie and high fashion during the 1960's and 1970's. A study of hippie fashion requires the definition of 'hippie'. Hippie live their lives from a natural perspective, disregarding the constraints of urban life. Hippie refuse to conform to traditions in values defined by older generations. A common value among this group is the pursuit of peace in society. Hippies redefined male-female relationships, and as a result they became more liberal than at any time before that era. Self-expression was a major characteristic of the hippie community; psychedelic art, ethnic style, rock music and drug use were the major components. The hippie look manifested itself and realized the ideology of hippie through long hair, blue jeans, psychedelic art prints on clothing, the imitation of the fashion style of popular rock bands and the adoption of flower motif. After 1967 the hippie look grew popular within mainstream population and began to influence 'Hkgh Fashion'. Examples of this are: unisex clothing, layering and the birth of punk fashion. In 1990's the fabric and design became more advanced and of higher quality. New fashion styles such as Grunge, Neo-hippie, Romantic, Ethnic, Pagent, Layering have their roots in hippie fashion of the 1960's. In 1960's and 1970's hippie fashion was born of the streets, with little emphasis on the quality of fabric. As time passed, the hippie look was upgraded through the use of better quality materials and more creative accessorizing. Hippie fashion is recreated as a contemporary theme, combined with modern style and past design and has become a worldwide fashion trend.

장구균의 동정에 대한 PCR 방법의 유용성

Background : Enterococci are important cause of nosocomial infections. Recently, vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) has been increasingly reported as significant nosocomial pathogens. Therefore, accurate identification of enterococcal species is a prerequisite step for the appropriate antibiotic treatment and epidemiologic surveillance. We wanted to know the usefulness of PCR method compared with Vitek automatic identification system. Methods : Totally 105 isolates were identified on the species level by Vitek (GPI card and software version R06.1), methyl-α -D-glucopyranoside test, and PCR methods. Results : Among 105 enterococcal isolates, 59 were identified as E. faecium, 11 E. faecalis, 6 E. gallinarum by Vitek. But 29 isolates (28%) were unidentified. Subsequently all of these isolates were analyzed by PCR, the results of which were as follows : 17 E. faecium, 5 E. casseliflavus, 7 E. gallinarum. Two isolates identified as E. gallinarum by Vitek were reidentified as E. casseliflavus by PCR and other methods far phenotypic characterization. Conclusoin : PCR method was more accurate and sensitive than Vitek for the identification of enterococci species. (Korean J Infect Dis 33:123∼127, 2001)

진행된 HIV 감염 환자에서 십이지장의 미란성 병변으로 발현한 Mycobacterium genavense 감염 1예

Mycobacterium genauense는 최근에 알려진 미코박테륨으로서, 식욕 부진, 체중 감소, 설사, 림프절 병증 등 파종성 Myocobacterium avium-intracellulare complex 감염과 유사한 임상상을 보이며, 위장관 침범을 잘 하는 것으로 알려져 있으나 아직 국내에서 증례는 보고된 바가 없다. 저자들은 진행된 HIV 감염 환자에서 십이지장의 미란성 병변으로 발현한 Mycobacterium genavense 감염 1예를 경험하였기에 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. 환자는 상복부 동통과 발열, 설사로 내원하였다. 십이지장의 미란성 병변에서 시행한 조직검사에서 항산균이 가득 차있는 거품세포가 관찰되었으며, 이 검체에서 16S rRNA 유전자의 중합연쇄반응 검사를 시행하여 Mycobacterium genavense를 확인하였다. Mycobacterium genavense, first identified in 1990, is known as a pathogen that mimics disseminated Myocobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) infection with particular propensity for the gastrointestinal tract. In Korea, no case with the organism has been reported. Herein we report a case of Mycobacterium genavense infection that manifested with erosive lesion of duodenum in a patient with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The patient presented with epigastric pain and fever, diarrhea. Duodenal biopsy showed histiocytic infiltration with numerous acid-fast bacilli. Identification of the mycobacterial isolate by the polymerase chain reaction restriction analysis of 16S rRNA gene revealed Mycobacterium genavense.

Continuous Transarterial Infusion Chemotherapy with Gemcitabine and 5-Fluorouracil for Advanced Pancreatic Carcinoma

Purpose: Pancreatic carcinoma is one of the most malignant tumors of the alimentary system, with relatively high incidence rates. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of two regimens for advanced pancreatic carcinoma: continuous transarterial infusion versus systemic venous chemotherapy with gemcitabine and 5-fluorouracil. Methods: Of the 48 patients with advanced pancreatic carcinoma receiving chemotherapy with gemcitabine and 5-fluorouracil, 24 received the selective transarterial infusion, and 24 the systemic chemotherapy. For the continuous transarterial infusion group (experimental group), all patients received gemcitabine 1000 mg/$m^2$, given by 30-minute transarterial infusion, on day 1 of a 4-week cycle for 2 cycles, and a dose of 600 mg/$m^2$ 5-fluorouracil was infused on days 1~5 of a 4-week cycle for 2 cycles. For the systemic venous group (control group), gemcitabine and 5-fluorouracil were infused through a peripheral vein, a dose of 1000 mg/$m^2$ gemcitabine being administrated over 30 min on days 1 and 8 of a 4-week cycle for 2 cycles, and a dose of 600 mg/$m^2$ 5-fluorouracil was infused on days 1~5 of a 4-week cycle for 2 cycles. The effectiveness and safety were evaluated after 2 cyclesaccording to WHO criteria. Results:The objective effective rate in transarterial group was 33.3% versus 25% in the systemic group, the difference not being significant (P=0.626). Clinical benefit rates(CBR) in the transarterial and systemic groups were 83.3% and 58.3%, respectively (P=0.014). The means and medians for survival time in transarterial group were higher than those of the systemic group (P < 0.005). at the same time, the adverse effects did not significantly differ between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Continuous transarterial infusion chemotherapy with gemcitabine and 5-fluorouracil could improve clinical benefit rate and survival time of patients with advanced pancreatic carcinoma, compared with systemic venous chemotherapy. Since adverse effects were limited in the transarterial group, the regimen of continuous transarterial infusion chemotherapy can be used more extensively in clinical practice. A CT and MRI conventional sequence can be used for efficacy evaluation after chemotherapy in pancreatic carcinoma.

High Dosage Sildenafil Induces Hearing Impairment in Mice

<P>Sildenafil is widely administered for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Recently, sensorineural hearing loss following the ingestion of sildenafil was reported in one male patient. We examined hearing in mice that were administered high doses of sildenafil for up to 105 d. To assess hearing impairment, we evaluated auditory brainstem responses, auditory middle latency responses, and otoacoustic emissions. At high doses, sildenafil increased the hearing threshold shift of auditory brainstem responses. High-dose sildenafil treatment also resulted in delayed latency of both auditory brainstem responses and auditory middle responses. Otoacoustic emissions differed between control and high-dose sildenafil groups with long-term treatment. Collectively, these data demonstrate that high-dose and long-term sildenafil administration can induce hearing impairment in mice.</P>

Nuclear Factor (Erythroid-Derived 2)-Like 2 Regulates Drug Resistance in Pancreatic Cancer Cells

OBJECTIVE:: To investigate the molecular basis of drug resistance in pancreatic cancer. METHODS:: The expression of nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) levels in pancreatic cancer tissues and cell lines was analyzed. Clinical relevance between Nrf2 activation and drug resistance was demonstrated by measuring cell viability after Nrf2 and adenosine 5&vprime;-triphosphate-binding cassette, subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) regulation by overexpression or knock-down of these genes. Activity of ABCG2 was measured by Hoechst 33342 staining. RESULTS:: Abnormally elevated Nrf2 protein levels were observed in pancreatic cancer tissues and cell lines relative to normal pancreatic tissues. Increasing Nrf2 protein levels either by overexpression of exogenous Nrf2 or by activating endogenous Nrf2 resulted in increased drug resistance. Conversely, a reduction in endogenous Nrf2 protein levels or inactivation of endogenous Nrf2 resulted in decreased drug resistance. These changes in drug resistance or sensitivity were also positively correlated to the expression levels of Nrf2 downstream genes. Similarly, the expression of ABCG2 was correlated with drug resistance. CONCLUSIONS:: Because the intrinsic drug resistance of pancreatic cancers is, in part, due to abnormally elevated Nrf2 protein levels, further research on regulating Nrf2 activity may result in the development of novel pancreatic cancer therapies.

응급실 자료의 구축과 그 활용

It is important work in the department of emergency medicine to manipulating data for the emergency patients. We developed a computer program for effectively managing data of the emergency patients and department on Dec. 1991, and began to build database on Jan. 1992. This program offers the various tools and functions for manipulating data, for quickly finding and displaying the information as you need, and for obtaining the basic results and analyses for quality assurance. The program was coded in a programming mode of FoxPro 2.5, and runs on IBM-PC-compatible computers. The systemic configurations to use properly, requires DOS 5.0 in O.S(operating system), 4 Megabytes or more in RAM(Random Access Memory), 100 Megabytes or more in Hard Disk capacity, at least 10 Megabytes in available disk space, and intel-80386(32 bits) in computer processing chip. The 8 bits combination codes are applied to write "Hangeul"(Korean language character). This program provides the various functions as the followings. 1. Be able to input, output, and search data as you need. 2. Be able to obtain the various reports by analysing the patient data. 3. Be able to retrieve the article data in Journal of Korean Society of Emergency Medicine, American Journal of Emergency Medicine, and Annals of Emergency Medicine as keywords, authors, etc. 4. Be able to manage the departmental data. By examples, manager of the emergency members, scheduler of the department, and collection book of the common senses in emergency medicine. 5. Other programs, which to reset and back up the selected data files for safely maintaining program, are supplied 6. Be able to study and prospectively analyze the clinical data by inserting the predefined optional programs. We expect the more advanced and beneficial program to manage data for the emergency patients and department.

<P>A π-conjugated polyazine containing diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) moiety, PDBTAZ, is synthesized through a simple condensation polymerization. Comparison of organic acids supplementation on the growth performance, intestinal characteristics and morphology, and cecal microflora in broilers fed corn-soybean meal diet

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of three kinds of organic acid (OA) products on the growth performance, intestinal characteristics and morphology, and cecal microflora in broilers fed a corn-soybean meal meal diet. Methods: A total of 420 one-day-old male Cobb 500 broilers with an average initial body weight of 49.11±1.02 g were used in this 42-day experiment. Birds were randomly allotted to one of five treatments (7 replicates with 12 birds per replicate). Treatments consisted of negative control (NC), basal diet; positive control (PC), basal diet+100 mg/kg of Aviramycin; OA1, basal diet+500 mg/kg of OA product 1; OA2, basal diet+1,000 mg/kg of OA product 2; and OA3, basal diet+1,200 mg/kg of OA product 3. Results: The results indicated that OA product addition had no effect on growth performance parameters, such as body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio, from days 1 to 14, 15 to 28, and 0 to 42, or on the pH values of the intestine, intestinal weight, or intestinal weight to body weight ratio. The intestinal morphology in terms of villus height and crypt depth were affected by dietary supplementation of OA products, respectively. Furthermore, dietary addition of OAs had positive influences on the maintenance of the cecal microflora based on the results of 16S rRNA analysis. Conclusion: Dietary inclusion of three kinds of OA products all benefit broilers, but the mode of action may be different. This study provides a basis for the application of OA products used in the poultry industry.
