        Evaluation of Total Lung Volume and Density using Multi-Detector Computed Tomography in Normal Dogs

        This study was performed to quantitatively assess the normal lung volume and density according to the position by multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) in dogs. Helical CT of the thorax was performed on 4 different positions with dorsal, left lateral, right lateral and ventral recumbency in 6 Pekingese and 6 Maltese dogs. During CT scanning, dogs were kept hyperventilated. Through the 3-dimensional reconstruction of CT images, the lung parameters were measured as the volume and density of the left, right including accessory lobe, and total lung. 3D images represented the different lung shape between Pekingese and Maltese dogs. Their difference of total lung volume and total lung density was not significant on the each position in both breeds. Right lung volume was significantly higher than left. The difference of left and right volume was 66.91 ± 25.1 ml. Linear relationship was shown between body weight and lung volume of ventral recumbency position. The dependent lung had higher density and lower volume than nondependent lung in both breed dogs. The volume of nondependent lung was not changed compared with the volume on ventral or dorsal recumbency. The total lung volume measured with MDCT is correlated with the lung density, and the lung density is useful to predict the normal total lung volume.

        개에서 발생한 비전형적 부신피질선종 1례

        A 15-year-old, spayed female maltese dog was presented with polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, abdominal distention, alopecia and hyperpigmentation. The complete blood counts were in normal range, and the serum biochemistry revealed elevated level of glucose and globulin. Mild hepatomegaly was seen on radiography of abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed the uniformly enlarged left adrenal gland measured 2.4 cm in diameter. ACTH stimulation test and LDDST revealed hyperadrenocorticism. HDDST revealed pituitary dependent hyperadrenocorticism. On CT images, isodense mass with contrast enhancing was seen in left adrenal gland. Cytologic result is consistent with benign tumor. Adrenal mass was surgically removed and evaluated. Histopathologic examination revealed adenocortical adenoma.

        Diagnostic Imaging of Liver Cirrhosis in a Shih-Tzu Dog

        A 5-year-old, intact female Shih-Tzu dog was presented with 1 year history of icterus, ascites and anorexia. The serum biochemistry revealed elevated liver enzyme levels. Microhepatica and decreased serosal detail were detected in abdominal radiography. Abdominal ultrasonographic findings included irregular liver margins, multifocal hypoechoic nodules in the liver parenchyma, and ascites. Computed tomography (CT) showed multifocal hypodense nodules with ring-like contrast enhancement. Cytologic and histopathologic examination by liver core biopsy revealed fibrosis. Cirrhosis was diagnosed based on above results. This report focuses on the imaging characteristics of ultrasonography and CT for liver cirrhosis in a dog.

        비글견에서 발생한 전반적 대뇌허혈

        Global cerebral ischemia occurs commonly in patients who have a variety of clinical conditions including cardiac arrest and shock. Cerebral ischemia results in a rapid depletion of energy stores that triggers resulting in excitotoxic death. Imaging studies of the brain with computed tomography(CT) or magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) are necessary to confirm the clinical neurolocalization, identify any associated mass effect, and rule out other causes of focal brain disorders. Cardiopulmonary arrest was occurred by propofol anesthesia in a 1 year old, intact female Beagle dog. After successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed within 5 minutes, clinical signs such as vocalization, paddling, opisthotonus and seizure were represented. At the 12th day, CT and MRI examinations of the brain were performed to evaluate the brain. After euthanasia, histopathologic examination was performed. On transverse image of CT, lesions appeared as a hypodense in the right dorsal surface of the frontal lobe and level of optic canal, and dorsomedial surface of occipital lobe of cerebrum. No contrast enhancement was represented following intravenous contrast administration. On MR images of brain, the lesions were seen as a hyperintense on T2-weighted(T2W) images and a isointense or mild hypointense on T1-weighted(T1W) images. Hyperintense lesions both T2W and T1W images were observed at the surrounding cerebral sulcus. There was no significant signal changes on contrast T1WI. Histopathologic examination after euthanasia revealed that the lesion was necrosis of the cerebral cortex caused by cerebral ischemia.

        개에서 초음파를 이용한 간 종괴의 세침흡인술 증례

        Hepatic mass was aspirated under the guidance with ultrasound in 9-year old female maltese with signs of anorexia, hematochezia, vomiting, depression, and abdominal distension. Radiographic and abdominal ultrasonographic examinations were performed, which revealed enlarged tubular shaped uterine mass and solitary, small round hyperechoic hepatic mass dorsal to gall bladder as an incidental finding. Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration was completed, but histologic confirmation should be made for definitive diagnosis by tissue core or wedge biopsy.

        갈근(葛根)의 항산화작용에 의한 위점막 보호효과와 내인성 Sulfhydryl 화합물의 영향

        Ethanol induces compoundhemorrhagic gastric lesions and causes a dose-dependent decrease in the concentration of endogenous nonprotein sulfhydryls in rat gastric mucosa. Sulfhydryl-containing drugs protect rats from ethanol - induced gastric lesions. Based on this findings, we investigated the involvement of sulfhydryl compounds in the antioxidant effects of Puerariae radix, a traditional herbal medicine, against ethanol - induced gastric lesions in the absence and presence of iodoacetamide(IDA. sulfhydryl blocking agent) in rats. respectively. Because of the known role of sulfhydryls in gastric cytoprotection, its role in gastric antioxidation was of intrest. In vitro, Puerariae radix extract(PRE) reduced linoleic acid autooxidation and exert DPPH radical scavenging effect. In vivo. PRE increased antioxidants(SOD, catalase. GSH) and reduced lipid peroxide level in ethanol-induced gastric mucosal lesions. But treatment with PRE plus IDA significantly inhibit the antioxidant effects such as SOD and GSH but did not affect catalase levels. These results suggest that Puerariae radix may play roles in the gastric cytoprotection through antioxidant effects and increase of SOD activity and GSH level are dependent of endogenous sulfhydryls.

        딸기 온실에서 점박이응애의 축차표본조사법 개발

        두 개의 딸기 온실 (농약살포포장, 천적방사포장)에서 점 박이응애 (Tetranychus urticae Koch)의 고정 정확도 수준에 서 표본조사법 (Fixed-precision sampling plan)을 개발하였 다. 표본추출은 조사구역당 3개엽으로 이루어진 복엽 1줄기 를 기준으로 하여 3줄기를 채취하였다. 각 복엽은 Relative net precision (RNP) 값을 비교하기 위해 3개의 서로 다른 단 위 (1엽, 2엽, 3엽)로 나뉘어졌다. RNP 값 결과 1엽 단위가 다 른 단위들보다 정확도와 효율적인 면에서 우수했다. 공간분 포 분석은 Taylor’s power law (TPL)를 이용하였으며, 각 딸 기 온실별로 계산된 TPL 계수의 동질성검정에는 공분산분 석 (ANCOVA)을 이용하였으며, 분석결과 차이를 보이지 않 았다. 표본추출 정시선을 구하기 위한 TPL 계수는 농약살포 포장과 천적방사포장의 딸기 1엽 단위에서 점박이응애 밀 도 자료를 합한 뒤 재계산하여 사용하였다. 그리고 점박이 응애 발생밀도수준을 3마리와 10마리로 설정하여 방제의사 를 결정하였다. 분석에 사용하지 않은 독립된 자료를 이용 하여 개발된 표본추출법의 유효성을 Resampling Validation for sampling plan (RVSP)으로 확인한 결과 적합한 정확도를 보였다. A fixed-precision-level sampling plan was developed to establish control of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in two strawberry greenhouses (conventional plot, natural enemy plot). T. urticae was sampled by taking a three-leaflet leaf (1 stalk) from each plant (3 three-leaflet leaves) from each sampling position. Each leaflet was divided into three different units (1-leaflet, 2-leaflet, and 3-leaflet units) to compare relative net precision (RNP) values for selection of the appropriate sampling unit. The relative net precision values indicated that a 1-leaflet unit was more precise and cost-efficient than other units. The spatial distribution analysis was performed using Taylor’s power law (TPL). Homogeneity of the TPL parameters in each greenhouse was evaluated by using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). A fixed-precision-level sequential sampling plan was developed using the parameters of TPL generated from the combined data of the conventional plot and natural enemy plot in a 1-leaflet sampling unit. Sequential classification sampling plans were also developed using the action threshold of 3 and 10 mites for pooled data. Using the results obtained in the independent data, simulated validation of the developed sampling plan by Resampling validation for sampling plan (RVSP) indicated a reasonable level of precision.

        Radiographic Evaluation of Small Intestinal Diameter in Small Breed Dogs

        The purpose of the present study was to prove our empirical tendency of relatively high small intestinal diameter (SI) to fifth lumbar vertebral height (L5) ratio, which has been used in dogs. In this study, the ratio of SI/L5 was determined in small breed dogs weighing less than 5 kg. In addition, the effect of large volume of contrast media on the intestinal dilation was determined by performing upper gastrointestinal contrast study. Abdominal radiography and upper gastrointestinal series were performed in twelve healthy dogs weighing less than 5 kg. Small intestinal diameter (SI), fifth lumbar vertebral height (L5), and twelfth rib diameter were measured on abdominal radiographs. The range of values of SI/L5 is from 1.03 to 2.26 in plain radiography, and from 1.55 to 2.5 in contrast studies. Contrast agent significantly increased small intestinal diameter, and could be considered as mildly dilated intestinal model. Therefore, a value of 2.1 for SI/L5 is recommended as the upper limit of the normal range suggesting nonobstructive intestinal dilation.
