With a view to investigating how Epimedium koreanum Nakai affects formation of melanin content in skin, we have measured change in the number of cell, melanin content, and tyrosinase activity by treating its aqueous extracts at various concentrations with B16 melanoma cells, the result of which is as follows: Firstly, cell viability has been shown as over 95% when treating with the aqueous extract of Epimedium koreanum Nakai up to 200 ug/mL, from which the effect of cell toxicology has not nearly appeared. Secondly, the number of cell has been slightly decreased than that of the control group when treating with the aqueous extract of Epimedium koreanum Nakai, which has not shown a statistical noteworthiness. Thirdly, the aqueous extract of Epimedium koreanum Nakai has increased in tyrosinase activity. Fourthly, the aqueous extract of Epimedium koreanum Nakai has promoted the formation of melanin content, its final product. According to the result, it is confirmed that Epimedium koreanum Nakai has the influence on promoting melanization of B16 melanoma cell, and it is considered that Epimedium koreanum Nakai can be applicable for curing vitiligo caused by decrease or loss of pigment through a systematic study.

Caesalpinia sappan L. has been commonly used as analgesic, a cure for contusion and sprain as well as a remedy for thrombosis in the oriental medicine. The main constituent of Caesalpinia sappan L. is brazilin having a flavonoid structure. Melanin is a main pigment found in skin, hair and eyes, and melanin synthesis is controlled by a cascade of enzymatic reactions regulated at the level of tyrosinase. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Caesalpinia sappan L. on proliferation and melanogenesis of B16/F10 melanoma cells. After 48h treatment of cells with various concentrations of EtOAc extract, the cells exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition in their proliferation without apotosis. Therefore, the growth retardation may be due to the cell arrest, not due to cytotoxicity. And there were estimated total melanin contents as a final product and activity of tyrosinase, a key enzyme, in melanogenesis. EtOAc extract increased the melanin contents and tyrosinase activity in low concentration (0.01-10㎍/ml), whereas it decreased those in high concentration. In conclusion, it was observed that EtOAc extract of Caesalpinia sappan L. differently regulates melanization of cells dependent of its concentrations.

Cornis fructus was extracted by successive extraction and then fractionated with hexane extract to get active is study was performed to determine the cytotoxic effect of hexane extract from Comis fructus on NIH 3T3 fibroblasts and cancer cell lines using MTT assay. Hexane extract showed cytotoxic effect against A549, B16 melanoma and MDA-MB-231. Futher fractionation with hexane extract was performed to obtain effective fraction, fraction 3 showed the cytotoxic effect against A549 and MDA-MB-231. In antimicrobial test of each fraction of hexane extract, fraction 5 showed antimicrobial activities against P. putida and P. aeruginosa.

Antifungal activities of the extracts from 26 medicinal plants were investigated utilizing paper-disk diffusion method and (1,3)β-glucan synthase inhibitory assay. (1,3)β-glucan synthase is considered as valuable target in the development of antifungal agents. Among the screened extracts, the ethyl acetate extract of Equisetum arvense, the ethyl acetate extract of Polygonum aviculare, the butanol extract of Crataegus pinnatifida and the n-hexane extract of Saussurea lappa showed significant antifungal activities on Candida albacans in both disk diffusion and enzyme assays.
음양곽과 $\alpha$ -MSH에 의한 B16 Melanoma 세포의 멜라닌화와 Retinoic Acid의 억제 효과

음양곽 물추출액과 $\alpha$-melanocyte stimulating hormone ($\alpha$-MSH)에 의한 B16 melanoma 세포의 멜라닌화를 비교 조사하였으며, retinoic acid (RA)에 의한 억제효과도 연구하였다. B16 melanoma 세포(1×$10^5$개 정도)를 $\alpha$-MSH로 처리하고 72시간 배양한 결과 $\alpha$-MSH 처리농도에 비례하여 tyrosinase 활성도와 melanin 생성이 증가되었으며, 8 ng/mL 처리시 tyrosinase 활성도는 350%, melanin 함량은 290% 이상이었다. 음양곽 물추출액으로 처리한 경우에는, 100 ${\mu}g$/mL 처리시 tyrosinase 활성도는 200%, melanin 함량은 180% 이상이었다. 위 조건에 RA를 가하면, $\alpha$-MSH의 경우 tyrosinase 활성도는 350%에서 210%로, melanin 함량은 290%에서 250%로 억제되었다. 음양곽 물추출물의 경우 tyrosinase 활성도는 200%에서 100%로, melanin 함량은 180%에서 120%로 억제되었다. 이 결과는 음양곽 물추출액이 cAMP 신호전달 경로를 통하여 B16 melanoma 세포의 멜라닌화를 촉진하며, RA는 그것을 억제하는 것으로 해석된다. Melanization of B16 melanoma cells was comparatively studied by the aqueous extract of Epimedium koreanum Nakai(EK) and $\alpha$-MSH. In addition, inhibitory effects of RA was investigated. B16 melanoma cells(about 1${\times}10_5$) have been shown an increase in tyrosinase activity and melanin contents in proportion to concentration of $\alpha$-MSH when treated with $\alpha$-MSH and incubated for 72 hrs. They indicated a 350% increase in tyrosinase activity and a 290% increase in melanin contents at 8 ng/mL. In case of EK, they have been shown a 200% increase in tyrosinase activity and a 180% increase in melanin contents at 100 ${\mu}g$/mL. In addition of RA to the above condition, they have been shown an inhibition from 350% to 210% in tyrosinase activity and from 290% to 250% in melanin contents in $\alpha$-MSH, and inhibition from 200% to 100% in tyrosinase activity and from 180% to 120% in melanin contents in EK. From the above results, it is suggested that EK promotes melanization of B16 melanoma cells through cAMP pathway, whereas RA inhibits it.
근육피로가 혈액과 근조직의 대사활성에 미치는 영향 및 뜸의 효과 Ⅰ

As a result of measuring a changes in the concentrations of creatinine and lactate, and LDH activity, produced in rat blood serum and muscular tissue in case of muscular exercise by swimming, with a view to examining the influence of fatigue upon muscle metabolism, we have concluded that the values have gradually increased in blood serum and muscular tissue of the experiment group rather than the control group in proportion to swimming time. On the one hand, the concentration of creatinine both in blood serum and muscular tissue within the experiment group with moxibustion to Can Su(B 18) has showed a prominent decrease in comparison with the control group(P < 0.01). The concentration of lactate in muscular tissue has decreased 2.2 times(75%) more than in blood serum (34%). From the above result, moxibustion, having an anti-fatigue effect, helps the rising of exercise ability, which, for me, results from the decrease in the concentrations of creatinine and lactate, i.e. material of fatigue, from the prohibition of LDH activity, and from the effect on anti-fatigue in muscle.
마이셀용액에서 크롬(Ⅴ1)의 전기화학적 환원에 관한 연구

The electrochemical reaction of chromium (Ⅵ at a static mercury electrode in micelle aqueous solution has been examined by DC polarography, DP polarography and cyclic voltammetry. The polarographic and cyclic voltammetric data shown to be chemical reactively irreversible process of chromium (Ⅵ) electrode reaction. the height of reduction waves and halfwave potentials were shifted to the more negative patential in the NaLS, CTABr solution. When chromium (Ⅵ) ion was reduced in basic solution, the following possible mechanism was portulated. ?? In acidic solution, the reduction of chromium (Ⅵ), dimer proceeds by a six-electron transfer to form chromium (Ⅲ). Therefore the following reduction was suggested. ??
