The current study was designed to evaluate the positive rates of arthropod allergens by Korean inhalant panel of MAST-CLA in patients with allergic rhinitis. One hundred sixty patients, diagnosed to allergic rhinitis in an Out Patient Center of Soonchunhyang University Chunan Hopsital during Aug 1998 to July 2000, were studied. 1. The overall positive rate among 35 specific allergens was 59.4% (95 patients). 2. The arthropod related allergen accounted for 82.1% (78 patients) of the positive rate. 3. Each positive rate of Dermatophagoides farinae (Df), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp), house dust (Hd), and cockroach mix (Cm) was 45.0% (72 patients), 43.1% (69 patients), 28.1% (45 patients), and 8.8% (14 patients), respectively. 4.Significant agreement between arthropod allergens was observer (P < 0.05). 5. The obseved agreement between Df and Dp was 95.6%, showing most significant Kappa index (Kappa = 0.911, P < 0.001). There results suggested that although MAST-CLA is a useful measure of identifying specific allergens, the specificity of two mite allergen relatively low, implying because of common allergen between mites in Korean panel of MAST-CLA. Our data also supported that arthropod is the major cause of allergen in patients with allergic rhinitis, however, the MAST-CLA should be modified in order to exclude common allergen of mite and to include more specific mite allergen.

Dieckol, a polyphenol compound extracted from Brown algae, Ecklonia cava, is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorigenic activities. However, the underlying molecular mechanism by which dieckol regulates cancer cell growth and proliferation remains elusive. Here we report that dieckol extracted from Ecklonia cava inhibited 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced human hepatocellular carcinoma SK-Hep1 cell motility, and that dieckol decreased extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) activities, but not p38 Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK), in dose-dependent manner. Dieckol reduced TPA-induced activator protein-1 transcriptional activity. TPA-induced matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity was greatly reduced in SK-Hep1 cells by treatment of dieckol. These findings suggest that dieckol functions as a potent inhibitor for tumor promoter-mediated MAPK signaling pathways leading to AP-1 and MMP-9 activation thereby regulates cancer cell motility.

Recently, the green roofs market is active, but most constructors use former waterproofing method. So there are a lot of problems in the sub-organization of the green roofs system. I studied to use the plastic panel for the access-floor struct of the green roofs system and I tested about the effectiveness of root barrier, impact resistance, compression load, and dissolution. I have not found any problems about root barrier, impact resistance, compression load, and dissolution in the results. The sub-organization of the green roofs system using the plastic panel is effective for root barrier, impact resistance, compression load, and dissolution. We can apply it to the dried and unified execution technology.

<P>Numerous studies have shown the benefits of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on the repair of spinal cord injury (SCI) model and on behavioral improvement, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, to investigate possible mechanisms by which MSCs contribute to the alleviation of neurologic deficits, we examined the potential effect of human umbilical cord blood-derived MSCs (hUCB-MSCs) on the endogenous cell proliferation and oligogenesis after SCI. SCI was injured by contusion using a weight-drop impactor and hUCB-MSCs were transplanted into the boundary zone of the injured site. Animals received a daily injection of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) for 7 days after treatment to identity newly synthesized cells of ependymal and periependymal cells that immunohistochemically resembled stem/progenitor cells was evident. Behavior analysis revealed that locomotor functions of hUCB-MSCs group were restored significantly and the cavity volume was smaller in the MSCs-transplanted rats compared to the control group. In MSCs-transplanted group, TUNEL-positive cells were decreased and BrdU-positive cells were significantly increased rats compared with control group. In addition, more of BrdU-positive cells expressed neural stem/progenitor cell nestin and oligo-lineage cell such as NG2, CNPase, MBP and glial fibrillary acidic protein typical of astrocytes in the MSC-transplanted rats. Thus, endogenous cell proliferation and oligogenesis contribute to MSC-promoted functional recovery following SCI.</P>

Background : Type 1 diabetes mellitus results from irreversible loss of β cells in pancreatic islet. It is generally known that abnormal MHC expression and interaction of variable cytokines play a role in β cell death, but the precise mechanism of β cell death is unknown. Apoptosis is a physiological form of cell death and can play an important role in β cell death in experimental diabetic animal models. Thus, in insulin and vitamin E treated LDSD mice and streptozotocin treated control mice. We attempted to comparing the levels of blood glucose (BG), the degree of insulitis, and number of apoptotic cells. Our study goal was to understand inhibition of apoptosis which thought to play an important mechanism in reducing the degree of hyperglycemia and insulitis. Methods: In 3 LDSD mice groups (group 1: control group with streptozotocin only, group 2: streptozotocin plus insulin, group 3: streptozotocin plus vitamin E), the effects of insulin and vitamin E on the blood glucose levels and the degree of insulitis were evaluated. The number of apoptotic cells of pancreatic islet was compared using double staining immunohistochemical method. Results : The levels of BG, degree of insulitis and the rate of apoptosis of pancreatic islet cells were decreased in insulin and vitamin E treated groups when compared to the control group. There was no difference in number of apoptotic cells between insulin and vitamin E treated group, but levels of BG and degree of insulitis were higher in vitamin E treated group than insulin treated group as time elapsed. Conclusion : Insulin and vitamin E can decrease the elevation of BG and the degree of insulitis via inhibition of apoptosis in LDSD mice.

A carbon composite was synthesized by mechanical mixing of ball-milled graphite and PVC powders, followed by pyrolysis reaction of PVC. Natural graphite ball milled under atmosphere of argon or air leads to a disordered structure. It appears that the electrochemical lithium intercalation reaction is dependent on the atmosphere in which the graphite is ball milled. The carbon composite obtained using air-milled graphite shows a high reversible capacity and high initial coulombic efficiency compared to argon-milled graphite. This is attributed to the enhanced thermal stability of a disordered structure in the air milled sample. For the one with air-milled graphite, the disordered structure is maintained during heat treatment, while argon-milled graphite is partially crystallized.
