The 3-layer type alumina membrane consisting of different pore size shows the decreased selectivity and rejection because of cracks in the separation layer generally occurred during the manufacturing process. To modify these cracks, the colloidal sol is applied by sol-gel process after treating by alternative wetting method using controlled humidity(Alternative Wetting Method by controlled humidity) and evaluated the characteristics. For the evaluation of the leakage for the sealed membrane, the sealed membranes were tested by 3 kinds of dyes. For the comparing of native and modified membranes, the modified membranes for the cracks treated by Alternative Wetting Method by controlled humidity were also tested by SEM, permeability by liquid equipment, selectivity and rejection of the P.E.G./water mixtures. The results showed that the rejections were increased ca. 0.6, 18 and 17 % for the P.E.G. polyethyleneglycol 2000, 12000 and 35000 individually. The permeabilities are decreased, however, 77% for the pure water caused by deposition of colloidal silica sol after caulking. In conclusion, the Alternative Wetting Method by humidity control had the effect for the modification of ultrafiltration alumina membrane for separation of liquids and gases, though having problem of deposition.

Liquid mixing characteristics was investigated in a batchwise three phase (air-water-sand) bubble column with suspended solid particles, Mixing time was measured by conductivity method under various operating conditions and analyzed. We found that mixing time decreased with increasing gas velocity and it was shorter than that in air-water system, because of increasing recirculation velocity of liquid phase. But, mixing time was not influenced by diameter and concentration of solid particles In these conditions, calculated mixing times based on liquid mixing model of interacting stirred tank in series were well agreed with experimental ones. Also, predicted height of mixing tank in the theoretical model was equal to column diameter and it was larger than that in an air-water system.

The superficial spreading type of early gastric cancer has usually been defined as an early gastric cancer in which the product of the longest diameter and the diameter perpendicular to it was greater than 25㎠. Although the superficial spreading type of early gastric cancer is histologically aggressive compared with those without such histological aggressiveness, the 5 year survival rate is as good as a non-superficial spreading types of early gastric cancers if the wide surgical resection with extensive lymph node dissection is performed as a treatment. We experienced a case of superficial spreading early gastric cancer in a 59-year-old man. This case is reported with a brief review of related literature.

Purpose: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has recently been spotlighted, and CAM can be defined as methods for treating diseases or ways to maintain physical health that out lie outside the boundaries of conventional medicine. We have conducted research to determine the status of CAM usage among Korean gastric cancer patients and their attitudes toward it, to determine what better can be done about CAM. Methods: We surveyed those patients in St. Mary Hospital who were diagnosed to gastric cancer and who volunteered to participate in this study. The survey consists of 38 questions and each question covered personal characteristics information as to whether they have used CAM, whether they were satisfied after taking CAM and their intentions for re-use. Results: A total of 195 patients answered the survey. 80 patients (41%) experienced CAM for the purpose of remedying their gastric cancer. The top leading CAM was dietary supplement for 52% of the patients, ginseng for 26% of the patients and Chinese herbal medicine for 10.8% of the patients. 54 patients (67.5%) were satisfied with the results of the CAM and they said that it had an effect on fatigue (45%). The statistics showed positive correlation between the level of education and the CAM users (P=0.001). Conclusion: The percentage of patients using CAM among the gastric cancer patients was high, up to 41%. Most of these patients wanted more information and discussion with their physicians about CAM therapies. The interesting thing was that most of the CAM was oral medicine. Based on our findings, research on the safety and effectiveness of CAM is required.

Background: High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) provides a high flow of humidified and heated oxygen. The use of HFNC allows respiratory failure patients required mechanical ventilation a chance to delay intubation. We compared the hospital outcomes of critical ill patients with HFNC therapy, early failure or late failure. Methods: We performed a retrospective observational study of patients receiving HFNC therapy in a tertiary hospital between January 2013 and March 2014. We selected intubated patients for the failure of HFNC therapy and classified the patients into two groups depending on the timing of intubation, intubation before and after 48 hours. Results: A total of 615 patients receiving HFNC therapy were enrolled in our study. Among them, 175 patients clinically deteriorated despite HFNC therapy and finally received endotracheal intubation. Before 48 hours, 130 patients (74.3%) were intubated and after 48 hours, 45 patients (25.7%) were intubated. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between two groups except higher diabetes mellitus (33.85% vs. 15.56%, p=0.02) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score day 1 (9.81±3.82 vs. 8.07±3.85, p=0.009) in the patients with intubation before 48 hours. The patients with intubation before 48 hours had higher extubation (37.69% vs. 15.56%, p=0.006) and ventilator weaning rate (55.38% vs. 28.89%, p=0.002), lower ICU mortality (39.23% vs. 66.67%, p=0.001), and longer ventilator free days (8.58±10.06 vs. 3.62±7.48, p=0.011). Conclusions: In a patient with clinically deterioration during HFNC therapy, delayed failure may cause bad outcome and harmful.

An Intronic Silencer of the Mouse Perforin Gene
Byung-Soo Youn,Chae Lyul Lim,Man Kyun Shin,Jams M. Hill,Byoung S. Kwon 한국분자세포생물학회 2002 Molecules and cells Vol.13 No.1
We have previously shown that the perforin gene locus is comprised of eight DNase I hypersensitive sites (DHS). Seven (DHS I-DHS VII) of them were CTLspecific whereas one (DHS VIII) in the second intron was expressed in a wide range of cell types. DHS VIII was highly AT-rich (75%) and was comprised of multiple sets of high mobility group (HMG)-I/Y binding site, two potential Special AT-rich Binding protein (SATB-1)-binding sites, and a long stretch of CTAT repeats, indicating that DHS VIII may relate to nuclear matrix-associated region (MAR). When DHS VIII was inserted into the perforin promoter-driven luciferase gene, it silenced the reporter gene transcription in CTLL-R8 cells in an orientation- and distanceindependent manner. Moreover, this silencing effect was also observed in other promoters in a variety of non-CTL cell lines, suggesting that DHS VIII exerted a global silencing effect. Deletion analysis and gel-shift assays indicated that the silencing effect was mediated by the CTAT repeats and its binding protein called CTAT repeats-binding protein (CRBP).
