In order to extend the shelf life of Wasabi paste, the effects of citric acid were confirmed at 35 o C for 28 days. Citric acid-treated groups contained citric acid in amounts of 0.05, 0.10, 0.17, 0.30, and 0.40%, respectively. Quality characteristics of Wasabi pastes were determined in pH, titratable acidity, soluble solid content, color values, microbial analysis (aerobic bacteria, yeast), gas production, and content of allyl isothiocyanate. The pH and titratable acidities of Wasabi pastes added with citric acid were indicated as 4.03-5.19 and 4.23-4.82%, respectively. Soluble solid content was significantly different according to concentrations of citric acid. L values showed the highest at 50.05±0.46. a and b values were increased during the storage period. Total aerobic bacteria and yeast counts of Wasabi pastes were decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Gas production from Wasabi pastes showed at 19.55-19.80 mL/tube after 28 days of storage. The addition of citric acid (0.3% or more) to the Wasabi paste resulted in increased storage stability.
Background and Objectives:S100 calcium-binding proteins are known to play multiple roles in progression and invasion of various carcinomas. In this study, we focused on two kinds of these proteins, S100A4 and S100A2, and investigated their expressions in thyroid neoplasm. Subjects and Method:We investigated S100A4 and S100A2 expressions in 75 thyroid neoplasms by immunohistochemistry. Results:S100A4 and S100A2 were not expressed in normal thyroid follicles or follicular carcinomas. Positive relationships were established between S100A4 expression and size (p=.014), invasiveness (p=.029) and T stage (p=.004) of papillary carcinomas. Especially, the S100A4 expression was observed more frequently in the peripheral area (p=.046). But there was no correlation between S100A4 expression with multiple tumor formation and lymph node me-tastasis. Positive relationships were established between S100A2 expression and size (p=.041), invasiveness (p=.008) and T stage (p<.001) of papillary carcinomas. S100A4 expression was also observed more frequently in the peripheral area (p=.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that S100A4 and S100A2 contribute to the progression and local invasion of thyroid carcinoma. (Korean J Otolaryngol 2007 ;50 :319-26)
Background : Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma is a category of renal cell carcinoma composed of histologically characteristic tumor cells. E-cadherin is an intercellular adhesion protein that has been correlated with tumor aggressiveness in many carcinomas, including clear cell renal cell carcinoma. However, the significance of an E-cadherin expression in chromophobe renal cell carcinoma is not known. Methods : We evaluated the E-cadherin expression status of 65 chromophobe renal cell carcinomas by performing immunohistochemical staining with the tissue microarray method. The percentage of positively stained tumor cells was evaluated and this was then classified into two categories: a low expression where 0 to 25% of the cells are positive, and a high expression where more than 25% of the cells are positive. Results : Among 65 cases, 11 cases (17%) showed a low expression, and 54 cases (83.0%) showed a high expression. The tumors with low expression were more likely to have a higher stage but this was not significant (p=0.056). On the survival analysis, a low Ecadherin expression was significantly associated with poor cancer-specific survival (p=0.005) and progression-free survival (p=0.003). Conclusions : The E-cadherin expression is a good prognostic marker for survival in patients with chromophobe renal cell carcinoma.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the functional effects of Dried Distiller's Grains with Solubles (DDGS) as an ethanol-based byproduct in order to find the applicability of DDGS as a cosmetic material and to improve its value. In the anti-oxidation test, based on DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay, anti-oxidation activity was found, and ABTS radical scavenging activity was improved. Given that, anti-oxidation effects seemed to be attributable to hydrophilic substances, rather than hydrophobic substances. According to the whitening effect analysis through Tyrosinase inhibition assay, a 25% inhibition activity was found using a concentration of 10㎎/㎖. In the collagenase inhibition activity test, for the analysis on the wrinkle-care effect, a 70% inhibition activity was found using a 6㎎/㎖ concentration; in the elastase inhibition activity test, a 96% inhibition activity was found using the 100㎎/㎖ concentration. The water extract from the DDGS sample did not have better whitening or wrinkle-care effects than the positive control group arbutin and EGCG (epigallocatehin gallate). However, when it was compared with brown rice and barley, its anti-oxidation, whitening, and wrinkle-care effects did not fall much. It indicates that DDGS, mainly used as animal feed, is applicable as a cosmetic material.
Malaria is a protozoan disease transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. Since Plasmodium vivax malaria reemerged in the north west areas of South Korea in 1993, many cases with various manifestations have been reported, Clinicians should be aware of the rare and severe complications as well as the common complications. Splenic complications such as hematoma formation rupture, torsion, cyst formation, and infarction are unusual manifestations of tertian malaria: therefore we present two cases of P. vivax malaria with severe splenic complications with review of literature. One had a splenic infarction and the other had a splenic rupture, which was diagnosed by computed tomography. Both patients were successfully treated with a conservative approach.
