Electron microscopy of morphological changes in Staphylococcus aureus induced by penicillin and vancomycin which interfere with cell was synthesis revealed morphological alterations which correlated well with their mechanism of action. And the studies also were undertaken to investigate alterations in surface morphology resulting from the action of gentamycin known to interfere with intracellular protein synthesis. Cultures of Staphylococcus aureus were exposed to penicillin G(1/2 MIC), vancomycin(1/2 MIC) and gentamycin(1/2 MIC) for 5 hours at 37℃. The following results were obtained; 1. Subinhibitory concentration of penicillin G(1/2 MIC) do not kill Staphylococcus aureus, they were induced the cell surface depression, large and small cell formation. 2. In the exposure to 1/2 the MIC of penicillin G, the cross wall was much wider than in the control, 1/2 the MIC of penicillin G have appeared to inhibit cross wall lysis in Staphylococcus aureus. 3. The effects of 1/2 MIC of vancomycin on Staphylococcus aureus revealed the small surface depression, but the cross wall are normal appearance. 4. Specific abnormalities of Staphylococcus aureus by 1/2 MIC of gentamycin are not evident.

A successful treatment of infants and children with congenital heart defects depends upon several factors: diagnosis must be accurate, the operative technique, including techniques of perfusion and myocardial preservation, must be suited to the needs of patients and intensive cares, including accurate anesthesia, must be applied through all stages of investigation and treatment, i.e. before, during and after the operation. Recently we performed a open heart surgery successfully for a six-years old girl who had suffered from frequent upper respiratory tract infection and mild to moderate exertional dyspnea with congenital heart defects (ventricular septal defect, Kirklin type II, with patent foramen ovale). The operation and postoperative course were very smooth. And now we report this with review of literatures.

An Ac-type Plasma Display Panel (PDP) operating with Ne-Ar(0.1%) Penning mixture gas is fabicated. The characterics of the panel with electrodes covered with thin and thick dielectric layers are studied. The brightness of the Neon-orange light emitted by the panel measured as function of applied voltage and frequency. As an application, a graphic display system equipped with PDP showing still and moving pictures is made.
Effects of Cell Cycle Inhibitors on Cell Death of Human Cancer Cell Lines

Genotoxic agents are known to cause cell death mostly by apoptosis in susceptible cells and this action plays an important role in tumor regression after chemotherapy. It has been thought that the apoptotic process may be associated with cell cycle. In the present study, the effect of aphidicolin and nocodazole, reversible cell cycle inhibitors, on the apoptosis or cell death induced by actinomycin D was studied in 3 cell lines. HeLa, SiHa and NIH/3T3 cells were treated with actinomycin D(100 nM)alone or in combination with cell cycle inhibitors for 20 hours; or presynchronized cells were treated with actinomycin D for 4 hours and further incubated for 20 hours in fresh medium. The synergistic effect of IBMX(5 or 10 μM)on the apoptosis or cell death induced by actinomycin D was also studied. The results were as follows; Majority of HeLa cells showed apoptotic changes after actinomycin D treatment. Aphidicolin or nocodazole blocked neither initiation nor progression of actinomycin D-induced apoptosis in HeLa cell. Aphidicolin pretreatment enhanced the actinomycin D-induced apoptosis of HeLa cells and cell death of SiHa cells and nocodazole pretreatment enhanced cell death of SiHa cells. IBMX moderately enhanced actinomycin D-induced cell death of NIH/3T3 and to less extent that of SiHa cells. These results show that neither initiation nor progression of actinomycin D-induced apoptosis or cell death can be blocked by cell cycle arrest, and that cAMP is partly responsible for actinomycin D-induced apoptosis in certain types of cells.
저온 열처리가 탄소 음극재의 물리·화학적 특성 및 이차전지 성능에 미치는 영향

본 연구에서는 저온 열처리 탄소의 물리·화학적 특성이 이차전지 음극재로서의 전기화학적 거동에 미치는 영향에 대하여 고찰하였다. 석유계 핏치의 코크스화를 위하여 600 ℃ 열처리를 수행하였으며 제조된 코크스는 700~1500 ℃로 탄화 온도를 달리하여 저온 열처리 탄소 음극재로 제조되었다. 탄소 음극재의 물리 화학적 특성은 N2 흡·탈착 등온선, X-ray diffraction (XRD), 라만 분광(Raman spectroscopy), 원소 분석 등을 통하여 확인하였으며,저온 열처리 탄소의 음극 특성은 반쪽 전지를 통한 용량, 초기 쿨롱 효율(ICE, initial Coulomb efficiency), 율속, 수명 등의 전기화학적 특성을 통하여 고찰하였다. 저온 열처리 탄소의 결정 구조는 1500 ℃ 이하에서 결정자의 크기와 진밀도가 증가하였으며 비표면적은 감소하였다. 저온 열처리 탄소의 물리화학적 특성 변화에 따라 음극재의 전기화학 특성이 변화하였는데 수명 특성은 H/C 원소 비, 초기 쿨롱 효율은 비표면적, 율속 특성은 진밀도의 특성에 기인하는 것으로 판단되었다. In this study, effects of the physical and chemical properties of low temperature heated carbon on electrochemical behavior as a secondary battery anode material were investigated. A heat treatment at 600 ℃ was performed for coking of petroleum based pitch, and the manufactured coke was heat treated with different heat temperatures at 700~1,500 ℃ to prepare low temperature heated anode materials. The physical and chemical properties of carbon anode materials were studied through nitrogen adsorption and desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis. Also the anode properties of low temperature heated carbon were considered through electrochemical properties such as capacity, initial Coulomb efficiency (ICE), rate capability, and cycle performance. The crystal structure of low temperature (≤ 1500 ℃) heated carbon was improved by increasing the crystal size and true density, while the specific surface area decreased. Electrochemical properties of the anode material were changed with respect to the physical and chemical properties of low temperature heated carbon. The capacity and cycle performance were most affected by H/C atomic ratio. Also, the ICE was influenced by the specific surface area, whereas the rate performance was most affected by true density.

N/A l2 patients who have survived more than 3 years after transarterial embolization with and without I-131 Lipiodol or chemotherapeutic agents from Feb. 1985 were analyzed:in terms of factors of tumor size, type, treatment method and cause of death. The tumors were less than 6.0 cm, nodular or multinodular presentitions. 10 patients were in criteria of Child class A and partal vein thrombosis was not identified at initial treatment. Five patients died due to hepatic failure and longest survival was 4 year and 6 months. Recurrent tumors were identified in nine patients within one year and multiple TAE proeedures were perfvrmed. Karly rercognition of recurrent tumors with perioidic serum AFP and uItrasound examinatiene artd prompt TAE should be performed to get lorg term survival.
