The purpose of this study is to identify factors of the causal attribution of cancer and to determine related variables. Method: Subjects were one hundred and thirty three cancer patients. The tool of the perceived causal attribution used was developed by authors and basically founded on Kim's work(1993). The SAS program was used to analyze the data along with descriptive statistics. t-test. ANOVA. Duncan's Multiple range test, and Principal component analysis and varimax rotation. Results: 1) The perceived causal attribution measurement revealed four factors; overload, destiny, stress, and constitution. The total percentage of variance explained by the four factors was 44.3%. 2) The scores of destiny on women, having religion, unemployed, lower level of education, no spouse, groups of uterine cervix and lung cancer, not receiving an operation and receiving radiation were significantly higher than those other groups. 3) The scores of stress on women, having religion, and not having a job were significantly higher than those on men, without religion, and having a job. 4) The scores of constitution on those in their forties, women, not receiving an operation and receiving radiation were significantly higher than for those in their sixties, men, receiving operation and not receiving radiation. There was no significant difference in the factor scores of overload by any variables. Conclusion: Factors of the perceived causal attribution of cancer among Korean cancer patients were overload, destiny, stress, and constitution. The scores of each factor the perceived causal attribution was significantly different by general and disease related characteristics.

Acinetobacter species is a non-fermentative aerobic gram-negative coccobacillus that is an important pathogen found in nosocomial infections. Recently, multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-AB) infections have been increasing and pose a serious problem. Most such infections present as bacteremia, pneumonia, or a wound infection; however, CNS infections are very rare. We herein present a case of ventriculitis caused by MDR-AB in a 37-year old man after a neurosurgical intervention. The patient was successfully treated with intrathecal colistimethate.

This study report the encapsulation of plasmid DNA in erythrocyte ghosts. The plasmid DNA was encapsulated into erythrocyte ghosts using three methods; osmotic shock, electroporation in isotonic medium, and electroporation in hypotonic medium. Of three methods, electroporation in hypotonic medium resulted in the highest encapsulation efficiency of plasmid DNA. The morpholohy of erythrocyte ghosts prepared by electroporaion in hypotonic medium was similar to that by osmotic shock alone. The circulation time of plasmid DNA in mice was prolonged by administration in erythrocyte ghost-encapsulated forms. These results indicated the potential of erythrocyte ghosts for biocompative nonviral delivery system of therapeutic genes for hematological diseases.

Background : The necessity of unify and standardize codes used at hospital has been emphasized since OCS (Order Communicating System) was adopted. Therefore, the purpose of this study were to standardize operation code by continuous training of the ICD-9-CM code that is used as standard code in OCS program at operating room. Method : In 400 operation data, operation code entered in OCS program at operating room was compared to operation name recorded in medical record. In addition, a matching rate between input data of operation code by medical record department and computing input data of operation code in 3,710 cases was compared for each department. User operation name and operation code were matched and major diagnosis by operation department and operation name were also matched. Results : User operation name was reflected in operation classification code in detail, and operation code entered on user was registered. Input rate and matching rate of operation code were gradually improved after improvement activity. In particular, a matching rate was high at ophthalmology where operation name is segmented. Plastic surgery and orthopedics with a lot of emergency operation and comprehensive operation name show low input rates. Conclusions : As the medical field makes progress in computerlization, awareness of information exchange and sharing becomes higher. Among codes to classified medical institution, codes related to surgical operation are all different by user of hospital and department. Computerlization and standardization is essential. And when efforts of standardization continue in alliance with individual hospital and institution, initiative of preparing medical policy data at a national level will be accelerated.

To design gene delivery systems which can deliver higher amounts of genes into stem cells, we studied the expression of receptors involved in the receptor-mediated endocytosis of bone marrow stromal stem cells. Bone marrow was isolated from ICR mice, and bone marrow stromal stem cells were isolated based on their plastic adherence property. Several cultrure conditions were screened for effective and continuous culture of marrow stromal stem cells. MesenCult medium was finally used to cultivate marrow stromal stem cells in vitro. As candidate receptors, various chemokine receptors were studied. Both bone marrow cells and marrow-derived stromal stem cells showed expression of CC chemokine receptors (CCR) and CXC chemokine receptors (CXCR). Marrow stromal stem cells showed higher expression of CCR5 and CXCR4 chemokine receptors as compared to other types of chemokine receptors. Moreover, though the expression chemokine receptors generally decreased in most chemokine receptors with the cultivation of marrow stromal stem cells, CCR5 and CXCR4 chemokine receptors retained the higher lever of receptor expressions over prolonged periods. These results suggest that the ligands exhibiting specific binding to CCR5 or CXCR4 might be used to modify gene delivery systems for increased level of receptor-mediated gene delivery into stromal stem cells.
HBx형질전환 생쥐에서 발생한 간세포암종에서 H-ras 및 c-myc의 발현에 관한 연구

<연구목적> HBx형질전환 생쥐에서 발생한 간세포암종의 발암과정에 종양유전자(H-rgs, c-myc)의 발현 정도를 조사하고자 하였다. <연구방법> 정상생쥐 12마리(4-18개월) 및 HBx 형질전환 생쥐 44마리(4-18개월)를 대상으로 포르말린에 고정하고 파라핀에 포매한 간 조직을 이용하여 면역조직화학적염색을 실시하였다. 실험군은 정상 부위, 이형성 부위 및 종양 부위로 구분하였으며, 종양 부위는 소결절성병변 부위와 간세 포암종 부위로 구분하였고, 이형성병변 부위는 이형성병변만 발견되는 부위, 소결절성병변과 동반된 이형성병변 부위 및 간세포암종과 동반된 이형성병변 부위로 구분하였다. <연구결과> H-rgs의 발현은 정상 간조직에 비하여 이형성병변 부위(P<0.05) 및 종양 부위(P<0.01)에서 증가하였으며, 소결절성병변 부위과 간세포암종 부위 사이에서는 간세포암종 부위에서 증가된 경향이었으나 통계학적으로 유의한 차이가 없었으며, 각 이형성병변 부위 사이에서도 유의한 차이는 없었다. c-myc의 발현은 정상 간조직 및 이형성병변 부위에 비해 종양 부위에서 증가하였으며(P<0.001), 소결절성병변 부위와 간세포암종 부위에서는 비슷하였고, 각 이형성병변부위 사이에서도 비슷하였다. <결론> HBx형질전환 생쥐에서 발생하는 간세포암종의 발생에 H-rgs는 이형성 변화를 일으키는 시기에 관여하며, c-myc은 이형성병변에서 암으로 이행하는 시기에 관여할 것으로 생각한다. Background: This experiment was designed for the expression of H-ras and c-myc in hepatocarcinogenesis of the HBx transgenic mice. Methods: Immunohistochemical stains in the paraffin embedded tissue of the liver were used for the detection of H-ras and c-myc in the 12 normal mice and 44 HBx transgenic mice of the 4-18 month old. Results: Expression of the H-ras was significantly increased in the dysplastic area (P<0.05) and tumor area (P<0.01) than in the normal liver. But there were no differences of H-ras expression between areas of microscopically identified hepatocellular carcinoma (MI-HCC) and grossly identified hepatocellular carcinoma (GI-HCC) and dysplastic areas among the only dysplastic areas, dysplastic areas with MI-HCC and GI-HCC. Expression of the c-myc was significantly increased in the tumor area (P<0.001) than in the normal liver and dysplastic area. But there were no differences of c-myc expression between areas of MI-HCC and GI-HCC, and dysplastic areas among only dysplastic areas, dysplastic areas with MI-HCC and GI-HCC. Conclusions: Our study suggests that H-ras is related to the dysplastic change and c-myc is related to the neoplastic change in the hepatocarcinogenesis of the HBx transgenic mice.
