신창열,류정수,김학림,강봉수,손의동,허인회 중앙대학교 약학연구소 1997 약학 논총 Vol.11 No.-
The effects of evening primrose oil (EPO). Vit.C and Vit.E on nerve conduction velocity (NCV) in streptozotocin -induced diabetic rats were investigated. 5 weeks- diabetes caused 27±0.5 % reduction in sciatic motor conduction velocity as compared with normal control. Dietary supplement of 5% EPO. 125mg/kg Vit.C. and lg/kg Vit.E prevented significantly the development of the motor nerve conduction velocity deficit about 21±0.5, 21±0.5, 26±0.5% respectively. The total serum cholesterol and triglyceride were decreased by administration 5% EPO. Vit.C, and Vit.E as compared with diabetic control. However, the serum glucose was not decreased by administration 5% EPO. 125mg/kg Vit.C but the serum glucose was decreased by administration lg/kg Vit.E as compared with diabetic control.

A satisfactory range of motion is one of the important goal of total knee arthroplasty. We investigated the factors that may influence the range of motion after total knee arthroplasty in 49 arthroplasties of 36 patients with minimum follow-up of 12 months. For minimizing the effect of other variables we included only osteoarthritic patients who received primary AGC(BIOMET) knees, cemented fixation of all three component by one surgeon. Some factors that may affect final results were verified. These factors include BMI(ratio of weight and height), preoperative range of motion, preoperative X-ray findings such as severity of spur change and varus deformity, early continuous passive motion trial. Statistical analysis was done by Student's t test. The statistically significant factors which influenced the range of motion after arthroplasty were the preoperative flexion deformity and range of flexion, varus deformity, and spur change.

<P>Methyl gallate (MG) was isolated from the bark of Acer barbinerve, which has traditionally been used in Oriental medicine. In the present study, we examined the effects of MG on melanin synthesis in Mel-Ab melanocyte cells. MG decreased melanin pigmentation in a concentration-dependent manner, but did not directly inhibit tyrosinase activity. Further analysis showed that MG had no effect on extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation, but induced phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)3β, which is known to increase β-catenin accumulation. Accordingly, the β-catenin level was increased by MG. However, a specific GSK3β inhibitor did not rescue the MG-induced inhibition of melanogenesis. Additionally, MG decreased the protein expression of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase, which regulate melanin synthesis. Based on these results, we conclude that MG inhibits melanogenesis by decreasing the expression of MITF and tyrosinase.</P>

Kim, Hak-Rim,Jung, Jong-Wook,Shin, Min-Soo,Kim, Myung-Eun,Lee, You-Jin,Kim, Jae-Hoon The Korean Infomation Display Society 2007 Journal of information display Vol.8 No.2
We demonstrate novel soft-lithographic techniques for preparing patterned liquid crystal (LC) orientations at an alignment layer. By controlling patterning conditions such as wetting property and operating temperature depending on polymeric materials, multi-directional or modified LC alignment conditions can be simply achieved.

<P>A simple and rapid liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method has been developed for the determination of BH4, DA, 5-HT, NE, EP, Glu, and GABA in mouse brain using epsilon-acetamidocaproic acid and isotopically labeled neurotransmitters as internal standards. Proteins in the samples were precipitated by adding acetonitrile, and then the supernatants were separated by a Sepax Polar-Imidazole (2.1 mm × 100 mm, i.d., 3 <I>μ</I>m) column by adding a mixture of 10 mM ammonium formate in acetonitrile/water (75 : 25, v/v, 300 <I>μ</I>l/min) for BH4 and DA. To assay 5-HT, NE, EP, Glu, and GABA; a Luna 3 <I>μ</I> C18 (3.0 mm × 150 mm, i.d., 3 <I>μ</I>m) column was used by adding a mixture of 1% formic acid in acetonitrile/water (20 : 80, v/v, 350 <I>μ</I>l/min). The total chromatographic run time was 5.5 min. The method was validated for the analysis of samples. The calibration curve was linear between 10 and 2000 ng/g for BH4 (r2 = 0.995) , 10 and 5000 ng/g for DA (r2 = 0.997) , 20 and 10000 ng/g for 5-HT (r2 = 0.994) , NE (r2 = 0.993) , and EP (r2 = 0.993) , and 0.2 and 200 <I>μ</I>g/g for Glu (r2 = 0.996) and GABA (r2 = 0.999) in the mouse brain tissues. As stated above, LC-MS/MS results were obtained and established to be a useful tool for the quantitative analysis of BH4, DA, 5-HT, NE, EP, Glu, and GABA in the experimental rodent brain.</P>

Purpose: This study summarizes the satisfactory results obtained using a composite fixation method for the surgical treatment of long bone fractures in elderly patients with osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 10 cases of long bone fractures, that were treated by composite fixation, involving patients over 60 years of age that presented with radiological osteoporosis. Composite fixation was applied incorporating, traditional plate and screw fixation in conjunction with bone graft, plate or intramedullary bone cement at four cases of humeral shaft fractures, three cases of femur supracondylar fractures, two cases of femur shaft fractures, and one case of tibia shaft fracture. Results were evaluated in methods of ambulation, range of motion, bony union and complications Results: Satisfactory ambulation and range of motion was observed in all cases, which showed bony union without early implant failure. No re-operation were necessary due to nonunion. No medical complication was noted. Conclusion: The results shows that the composite fixation method provided a stable reduction and a rigid fixation, which facilitated bony union, and allowed elderly patients with osteoporosis an early range of motion and mobility after the surgical treatment of long bone fractures.

The exponential increase in the use of mobile communication has triggered public concerns about the potential adverse effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) emitted by mobile phones on the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we explored the relationship between calcium channels and apoptosis or autophagy in the hippocampus of C57BL/6 mice after RF-EMF exposure with a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 4.0 W/kg for 4 weeks. Firstly, the expression level of voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs), a key regulator of the entry of calcium ions into the cell, was confirmed by immunoblots. We investigated and confirmed that pan-calcium channel expression in hippocampal neurons were significantly decreased after exposure to RF-EMF. With the observed accumulation of autolysosomes in hippocampal neurons via TEM, the expressions of autophagy-related genes and proteins (e.g., LC3B-II) had significantly increased. However, down-regulation of the apoptotic pathway may contribute to the decrease in calcium channel expression, and thus lower levels of calcium in hippocampal neurons. These results suggested that exposure of RF-EMF could alter intracellular calcium homeostasis by decreasing calcium channel expression in the hippocampus; presumably by activating the autophagy pathway, while inhibiting apoptotic regulation as an adaptation process for 835 MHz RF-EMF exposure.

The authors investigated the distribution of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype in blood donors with positive for anti-HCV (n=34), health check up examinees with positive for anti-HCV (n=29), and in patients with various chronic liver diseases positive for anti-HCV (n=63) in Pusan, Korea. HCV genotype was determined by using the molecular typing method through the reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT - PCR) with four type specific primers. Among 116 anti-HCV positive study subjects, 66.4% were positive HCV RNA by RT-PCR. The major HCV genotype was type Ⅱ (31.9%) and it was followed by type Ⅲ (27.6%). Two cases were type Ⅳ (1.7%). Double infection with two different HCV genotypes (mixed type) was found in three cases (2.6%). Three cases (2.6%) were not determined by the four type specific primers, it may have different subtype. Type Ⅱ was more prevalent than type Ⅲ in the blood donors and health check-up examinees, but the reverse was true in the chronic liver diseases patients including hepatocellular carcinoma patients, Type Ⅱ was more prevalent than type Ⅲ among the anti-HCV positive subjects with risk factors such as acupuncture history, surgical operation history, and transfusion history. In contrast type Ⅲ was more prevalent than type Ⅱ among the subjects without the above risk factors. It is supposed that the pathogenicity of different kind of HCV genotype might be different. The results of this study suggest that the type Ⅱ and type Ⅲ may be the major HCV genotype in Korea. The differences of HCV genotype distribution between the study groups support that the clinical significance according to the HCV genotype may be different.
