An elbow orthosis with a pneumatic rubber actuator has been developed to assist and enhance upper limbs movements and has been examined for the effectiveness. The effectiveness of the elbow orthosis was examined by comparing muscular activities during alternate dumbbell curl motion wearing and not wearing the orthosis. The subjects participated in the experiment were younger adults in their twenties. The subjects were instructed to perform dumbbell curl motion in a sitting position wearing and not wearing orthosis in turn and a dynamometer was used to measure elbow joint torque outputs in an isokinetic mode. Orthosis was controlled using contractile muscle force that is measured from force sensor through cDAQ-9172 board. The air pressure of the pneumatic actuator was O.3MPa the most suitable air pressure. For the analysis of muscular activities, Electromyography of the subjects was measured during alternate dumbbell curl motion. The experiment results showed that the muscular activities wearing the elbow orthosis were reduced. With this, we confirmed the effectiveness of the developed elbow orthosis.

In this study, a new bicycle system was developed to improve muscular strength using the Magneto-Rheological(MR) rotary brake. The friction load of the MR rotary brake is adjusted according to muscle strength of the subjects. The characteristic of muscular strength was studied with various friction loads of MR rotary brake. The friction load was occurred with the current, applied to the MR rotary brake. Experiments was composed of several cycling trials for various friction loads. In training programs involving muscle improvement, it is necessary to confirm muscle activity and fatigue. To measure the muscle activity and fatigue, EMG signals of rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), tensor fasciae latae (TFL), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VAS), gastrocnemius (GAS), tibialis anterior (TA) and soleus (SOL) muscles were collected with surface electromyography and analyzed into time and frequency domain. The experimental results showed that the muscle activity according to the applied current to the MR rotary brake was significantly different. The more the current was applied, the higher value of the integrated EMG (IEMG) was obtained. Especially, the magnitude of IEMG of the RF, BF, TFL and VL varied in direct proportion to the current. We have developed the upper limb orthosis with a pneumatic rubber actuator, which is intended for the assistance and the enhancement of upper limb muscular activities. In this paper, we investigated the effectiveness of the upper limb orthosis we developed. To find out the effectiveness of the orthosis, we analyzed muscular activity in the upper limbs of the Alternate Dumbbell Curl motion. Subjects in experiment were young and healthy person of 20`s. The subjects were instructed to the perform Alternate Dumbbell Curl motion in sitting position for motion analysis and we measured muscular activities of the subjects. The subjects were performed the Alternate Dumbbell Curl motion without and with the upper limb orthosis. We made a comparison the muscular activities of the upper limbs between without and with the upper limb orthosis. We compared the muscular activities according to the various load. For the analysis of muscular activities, we measured of the subjects during Alternate Dumbbell Curl motion. The experimental results showed that the muscular activities in with the upper limb orthosis were significantly reduced. As a result of this experiment, we confirmed the effectiveness of the developed upper limb orthosis.
