        반정량 식품섭취빈도조사지를 이용한 한국노인의 영양섭취 실태조사

        The aim of this study was to assess the nutrient intakes of the elderly subjects in Korea. Dietary assessment was carried out using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ) developed by our laboratory, which included 98 commonly consumed food items selected from 1998 National Health and Nutritional Survey for Korean population. Subjects (n = 2,660) aged 50yr and over were recruited in Seoul, 6 metropolitan cities, and 8 mid-size cities. Calcium and riboflavin intakes of the elderly subjects aged 65 yr and over (n = 1,974) were much lower compared with Korean RDA. Nutrient intakes of the three age group (50 - 64 yr, 65 - 74 yr, 75 yr and over) were decreased as age increased in male and female elderly. Nutrient intakes of male elderly, 75 yr and over, were significantly decreased while in female elderly nutrient intakes were gradually decreased as age increased. Over 30% of the elderly subjects did not meet 75% RDA for calcium, iron, vitamin A, and riboflavin. The proportion of the elderly subjects whose intakes were below 75% RDA was much higher than the elderly whose intakes were above 125% RDA, especially among the elderly aged 75 yr and over. This study revealed that the Korean elderly had inadequate intakes for many nutrients. This will cause a serious nutritional problem for the elderly.

        A highly sensitive and selective fluoresence high-performance liquid chromatography using 1-bromoace-tylpyrene as a pre-labelling reagent was applied to the determination of cinnamic acid and glycyrrhetic acid at p mol level. The optimum conditions for the derivatization such as concentrations of KOH, 18-crown-6, and 1-bromoacetylpyrene, reaction temperature and reaction time were investigated. The derivatives were separated on a reversed phase column using the mixture of acetonitrile, methanol and water as the mobile phase. The effluent was menitored by fluorometer. Linearities of calibration curve were obtained between 0.5 p mol and 2.0 p mol. The detection limit of cinnamic acid and glycyrrhetic acid was 0.05 p mol in a 20 ㎕ of injection volume.

      • Prednislolne이 골조직에 미치는 영향에 관한 형태학적 연구

        To study the effects of corticosteroids to the bone tissues, author grouped young(3 weeks affter birth) and adult ICR mouse by dosage, injected intramusculaily prednisolone, a series of corticosteroids, to posterior leg during 6 weeks per day, obtained femurs and tibias, measured the lengths of tibias and femurs. The portions of the distal end of tibial crests were cross-sectioned, general H-E stain was perpormed. The adjacent distal portions of femoral neck were sectioned longitudinally, observed endosteal surface by scanning electron micrscope The results were followings: 1. The adult group injected by large dosage (0.56mg/100g body weight/day) and the young group injected by small dosage(0.14mg/100g body weight/day) from 3 weeks after birth were significantly shorter than the normal group according to statistics. And the adult group injected by small dosage (0.14mg/100g body weight/day) was not different from normal group according to statistics. 2. In the light microscopic sutdy, the adult group injected by large dosage decreased in bone mass of compact bone severely, the adult group injected by small dosage changed a little grade. The young group injected by small dosage from 3 weeks after birth was not severe in bone change, but bone thickness decreased. 3. In the scanning elctron microscopic study, the adult group injected by large dosage and the young group iniected by small dosage from 3 weeks after birth decreased in trabeculae. The trabeculae of the adult group injected by small dosage were decreased slightly. 4. Integrating above all, the changes by prednisolone injection osteoporosis, of young period were more severe than those of adult, too.

        This study aimed to develop Materials for (The Infant Educare Program) (Dept. of Health & Welfare, 1996). Infant educare Materials were developed through following procedures: 1) analysis of reference and other educare materials 2) content analysis of (The Infant Educare Program) 3) developing materials and 4)testing and revising materials by professionals. Infant educare Materials that developed in this study were constituted of 12 kinds in 5 areas - Materials for management of daycare center, the nursery stories for infants, musical materials for infants, play things for infants, and educational materials for parents. First, materials for management of daycare center were considered various conditions whithin daycare centers and were compased of 2 kinds - diary for educare plan and diskettes for documents. Second, the nursery stories for infants were compased of materials for 3 stages-the weaning stage, the toddling stage, and the independent stage. Similarly, musical materials for infants were composed of 3 stages. And play things for infants were composed of 2 kinds - play things to be easily founded and easily making play things. Finally, educational materials for parents were composed of 2 kinds - guide book for parents education and diskettes for communication with parents. It is needed that persistent attention from professionals in developing and testing materials for infant educare. Also, further educational implications were discussed

        We experienced three cases of high signal intensity observed by Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in CO₂ are welders of steel-frame manufacturing industry. Case 1 was a 35 years old man who has been an CO₂ arc welder for 10 years, admitted a sudden onset of tonic clonic seizure. He complained fever, chilling and myalgia since 3 days before admission. On admission, in the test of manganese exposure indices, manganese concentrations of blood, urine and scalp hair were 5.17 ㎍/dl, 22.00 ㎍/l and 31.25 ppm respectively. Case 2 was a 35 years old man who has been an CO₂ arc welder for 20 years. On admission, He complained fatigue, numbness and weakness of extremities, and decrease of libido. In the test of manganese exposure indices, manganese concentrations of blood, urine and scalp hair were 6.34 ㎍/㎗, 14.62 ㎍/l and 57.87 ppm respectively. In neurologic examination, Palmo-mentle reflex and Myerson sign were observed. Case 3 was a 33 years old man who has been an CO₂ arc welder for 16 years. On admission, He complained loss of appetite, numbness of extremities, fatigue and decrease of attention. In the test of manganese exposure indices, manganese concentrations of blood, urine and scalp hair were 5.14 ㎍/㎗, 13.79 ㎍/l and 50.08 ppm respectively. In neurologic examination, Myerson sign was observed. In brain magnetic resonance imaging, T1WI showed symmetrical high signal intensity in basal ganglia and midbrain of three cases. Authors argued that they were developed by manganese exposure, and we considered that follow up study would be necessary.

        This study was carried out to understand the brewing and processing methods of rapid-brew alcoholic beverage. In the contents of 45 classical records, there were 68 items about rapid-brew alcoholic beverage and single and double brew alcoholic beverage. Those alcoholic beverage of 68 items above, were made from green grown at that time-rice, glutinous rice, regular rice. Selected 38 items among those brewages, alcoholics from glutinous rice, were distributed into 4 patterns. Four patterns, grounded on rapid-brewing and processing methods, were set one thing to another and analyzed.

        Quercetin intake, MATE1 polymorphism, and metabolic syndrome in Korean population: Hallym aging study

        Multidrug and toxic compound extrusion transporter-1 (MATE1) is a quercetin transporter. We examined the associations of quercetin intake and polymorphism of MATE1 in relation to metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Hallym Aging Study. Quercetin intake and the measurements for MetS were assessed in 2004. Six tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at MATE1 gene were genotyped in 428 Korean adults in 2012. We found a lower prevalence of MetS with quercetin intake; compared to the lowest quartile, odds ratios (ORs, 95% confidence intervals; CIs) were 0.44 (0.24-0.84) for the $3^{rd}$ quartile. Individuals with the minor allele of MATE1, rs2453589, tended to have a lower prevalence of MetS compared to those with the major allele (OR=0.69; CI=0.36-1.34). However, interactions between quercetin intake and six MATE1 polymorphisms in relation to MetS were not significant (p for interaction ${\geq}0.37$). In conclusion, intake of quercetin was associated with MetS in Korean populations.

        <P>Chemoprevention is considered a rational strategy for dietary approaches to prevention of cancer. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that many of our dietary principles are able to intervene in the multistage carcinogenesis process and phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphate, IP6), a phytochemical present in a variety of plant species, has been shown to prevent various cancers, including those of the mammary gland, colon and liver. However, the mechanism of chemoprevention by IP6 has not been fully elucidated. In the present study, we examined the effects of inositol and/or IP6 supplementation on rat hepatocarcinogenesis initiated by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and promoted by partial hepatectomy (PH). Supplementation with either inositol or IP6, or their combination, starting one week prior to administration of DEN, resulted in a significant decrease in both the area and the number of placental glutathione S-transferase positive (GST-P+) foci, a preneoplastic marker for DEN-initiated hepatocarcinogenesis. The administration of inositol and/or IP6 in drinking water caused marked enhancement in the glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity. In addition, the production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and the catalase activity were significantly reduced in rats supplemented with inositol and /or IP6. Based on these findings, it is likely that the chemopreventive effects of inositol and/or IP6 on rat hepatocarcinogenesis initiated by DEN and promoted by PH are associated with induction of GST activity and suppression of lipid peroxidation.</P>

        Protective effect of lanostane triterpenoids from the sclerotia of <i>Poria cocos</i> Wolf against cisplatin-induced apoptosis in LLC-PK1 cells

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity is a serious adverse effect that limits the use of cisplatin in cancer patients. In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of lanostane triterpenoids (<B>1</B>–<B>10</B>) isolated from the ethanolic extract of <I>Poria cocos</I> Wolf against cisplatin-induced cell death in LLC-PK1 kidney tubular epithelial cells. Treatment of cisplatin induced significant cell death, which was suppressed by treatment with dehydroeburicoic acid monoacetate (<B>1</B>) and 3<I>β</I>-acetoxylanosta-7,9(11),24-trien-21-oic acid (<B>9</B>). Compound <B>1</B> exhibited the highest efficacy among the tested compounds and was thus subjected to further mechanistic studies. The increase in the percentage of apoptotic cells induced by cisplatin reduced by 4.3% after co-treatment of cells with compound <B>1</B> (50 and 100μM). Furthermore, phosphorylation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases JNK, ERK, and p38, and caspase-3, which characterize oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis, increased significantly after treatment with cisplatin, and decreased after treatment with compound <B>1</B>. These results indicate that the renoprotective effects of compound <B>1</B> may be mediated by its anti-apoptotic activity.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
