Microstructures in the directionally solidified duplex stainless steels were investigated in order to understand the effect of nitrogen addition. It was found that the addition of nitrogen causes formation of fine precipitates in a matrix and segregation phases of nitrogen in the α/γ interface. Both the fine precipitates and the segregation phases were identified CrN(fcc, a=4.16A˚), which has the coherent phase relationship with bcc α matrix of (200) CrN // (0 1 ̄ 1) α and (1 ̄1 ̄ 1) CrN // ( 3 ̄ 2 ̄ 1) α.

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>A blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with a baculovirus-expressed structural protein was developed for the detection of antibodies to foot-and-mouth disease virus type A. It exhibited 99% specificity with a cutoff of 53% inhibition. Its sensitivity was comparable to the sensitivities of the virus neutralization test and the liquid-phase blocking ELISA, indicating its potential as an alternative assay.</P>

Purpose: Patients with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SLECTS) rarely experience generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) after remission, and post-remission GTCS has not been thoroughly described in earlier studies. Herein, we describe the clinical and electrographic features of GTCS after a substantial period of seizure freedom in patients with SLECTS. Methods: This study included six patients (three boys and three girls) diagnosed with SLECTS who later developed GTCS after or near remission. Medical records, including clinical data and serial electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, were retrospectively reviewed for all patients. Results: Patients’ age at SLECTS onset ranged from 5.2 to 10.2 years (mean, 8.4 years), while seizure cessation was achieved between 8 and 12.2 years. During SLECTS, typical centrotemporal spikes were observed in all patients, and generalized spike-and-wave discharges were observed in three patients. The age at the first episode of subsequent GTCS ranged from 14.4 to 17.3 years (mean, 15.8 years), constituting an average interval of 5.6 years after the last episode of seizures (range, 4.1 to 8.1 years). EEG at subsequent episodes of GTCS revealed generalized discharges in two patients, focal discharges in two other patients, and normal discharges in the remaining two patients. Two patients had multiple episodes of GTCS. Conclusion: Although rare, GTCS may occur near or after remission in patients with SLECTS, and clinicians should be aware of this. Subsequent GTCS may be a manifestation of idiopathic generalized epilepsy. However, large-scale studies are needed to determine the nature of such episodes of GTCS and their associated risk factors.

Messnchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor occurring in both bone and soft tissues and exhibits characteristics of a highly malignant tumor. The authors experienced a case of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma occurring in a 39-year-old man, which had invaded the soft tissues of the chest wall and had been incompletely removed, and recurred in the adjacent 710 vertebra 4 years later. The patient presented with severe back pain and paraparesis at admission. Radiographic studies of the vertebra showed an aggressive osteolysis of the vertebral body, pedicle, lamina, compression of the spinal cord, and soft tissue invasion. The tumor was totally removed by an anterior and posterior combined approach. The removed vertebral body was replaced with a titanium mesh cage, and the thoracic spine was stabilized by both anterior and posterior fixations with instruments. The pathological and the clinical characteristics of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma are discussed.
Separation of Progressive Motile Sperm from Mouse Semen Using On-chip Chemotaxis

<P>We present a novel method for the separation of progressive motile sperm from non-progressive motile and immotile sperm. This separation was accomplished by inducing chemotaxis along a longitudinal chemical gradient in a microchip composed of a biocompatible polydimethysiloxane layer and a glass substrate. In a preliminary experiment using fluorescent rhodamine B as a marker, we verified that a chemical gradient was generated by diffusion within the microchannel. We used acetylcholine as a chemoattractant to evaluate the chemotactic response of sperm. We tested the response to a 1/2 to 1/64 dilution series of acetylcholine. The results of a mouse sperm chemotaxis assay showed that progressive motile sperm swam predominantly toward the outlet at an optimal chemical gradient of 0.625 (mg/ml)/mm of acetylcholine. This device provides a convenient, disposable, and high-throughput platform that could function as a progressive motile sperm sorter for potential use in intracytoplasmic sperm injection.</P>
A Monochromatic Soft X-ray Generation from Femtosecond Laser-produced Plasma with Aluminum

A tabletop ultrafast soft x-ray has been generated from the laser-produce plasma with a femtosec- ond pulsed Ti:Sapphire laser. The estimated total ux of Al Kff is of 2:2 109 photons/sec in 4 radian and the parameters related to the optical performance were obtained. The tungsten/silicon multilayer, at quartz and bent thallium acid phthalate (TLAP) crystal were used for monochrom- atization of soft x-ray to refine the aluminum Kff radiation and compared the respective value of E=E. To estimate the size of the x-ray source beam generated by a fs laser, the approximation using the FWHM obtained from the x-ray beam scan near the focal point was discussed, and the size of the diameter was about 9.76 m.
