Compaction water content is a key variable which controls fundamental properties of compacted clay (permeability, deformation and strength). There are three conditions in compaction water content (i.e. dry of optimum, optimum and wet of optimum). Actually, soil mass by compaction is unsaturated condition before seepage therefore, soil suction is the key which is able to explain properties of compacted clay. This paper used results from compacted Pittsburg sandy clay tested under UU test condition from Duncan and Seed in order to determine hyperbolic parameters and simulated behavior of Soyanggang dam as a example. As the results of analysis, dry of optimum presents higher strength and smaller displacement. Wet of optimum is sensitive to water content. Both dry and wet of optimum, any hydraulic fracturing potential does not appear. But dry of optimum is close to hydraulic fracturing.

Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods : For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results : In 1997. 99 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 45(45.5%) were PPNG. Conclusion : The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 45.5% in 1997.

고층 의료시설의 생물 오염물질 확산에 대한 연돌효과의 영향 분석

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the stack pressure on the interior dispersion of airborne bio contaminants in the high-rise general hospital by conducting the field measurement and numerical analysis according to the outdoor temperature and the releasing vertical point of the tracer gas assumed as a viral contaminant. In the field measurement of the well-known high-rise hospital, the interior airflow was affected by the stack effect that appeared like high-rise buildings. The numerical simulation was verified by comparing its prediction result and the field measurement. In the numerical simulation, there is high possibility that the airborne bio contaminant emitted from the infected patient in the lower floors could be transported to the higher floors through the airflow driven by the stack effect. The concentration distribution of the tracer gas was mainly affected by the outdoor temperature and the vertical release point.

The SARS virus began to appear and spread in North America and Southeast Asia in the early 2000"s, infecting and harming many people. In the process of examining the causes for the virus, studies on the airborne SARS virus and the way it spread were carried out mainly in the medical field. In the field of architecture, studies were done on the diffusion of air pollutants in buildings using gases such as CO₂, N₂O, or SF?, but research on virus diffusion was limited. There were also explanations of only the diffusion process without accurate information and discussion on virus characteristics. The aim of this study is to analyze the physical characteristics of airborne virus, consider the possibility of using coupled analysis model and tracer gas for analyzing virus diffusion in building space and, based on reports of how the infection spread in a hospital where SARS patients were discovered, analyze infection risk using tracer gas density and also diffusion patterns according to the location, shape, and volume of supply diffusers and exhaust grilles. This paper can provide standards and logical principles for evaluating various alternatives for making decisions on vertical or horizontal ward placement, air supply and exhaust installation and air volumes in medium or high story medical facilities.

Spinal angiolipomas are distinct but rare benign lesions composed of mature lipocytes admixed with abnormal blood vessels that vary from capillary to sinusoid or from venular to arterial in size. They account for 0.14% to 1.2% of all spinal axial tumors. 2% to 3% of extradural spinal tumors, and 16% to 35% of spinal lipomas. The tumors are mostly extradural and have a predilection site in the midthoracic region. The symptoms are usually due to cord compression. Magnetic resornance imaging is the diagnostic choice and surgery is universally successful in relieving the symptoms. The authors report a case of spinal angiolipoma in a 35-year-old female which was successfully treated by operation. A review of the literature on this lesion is also presented.

Purpose: This study was conducted to discriminate between normal hulled barley and Fusarium (Fusarium asiaticum and Fusarium graminearum) infected hulled barley by using the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technique. Methods: Fusarium asiaticum and Fusarium graminearum were artificially inoculated in hulled barley and the reflectance spectrum of the barley spike was obtained by using a near-infrared spectral sensor with wavelength band in the range 1,175-2,170 nm. After obtaining the spectrum of the specimen, the hulled barley was cultivated in a greenhouse and visually inspected for infections. Results: From a partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) prediction model developed from the raw spectrum data of the hulled barley, the discrimination accuracy for the normal and infected hulled barley was 99.82% (563/564) and 100% (672/672), respectively. Conclusions: NIRS is effective as a quick and nondestructive method to detect whether hulled barley has been infected with Fusarium. Further, it expected that NIRS will be able to detect Fusarium infections in other grains as well.

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>Formate-dependent proton reduction to H2(HCOO<SUP>−</SUP>+ H2O → HCO3<SUP>−</SUP>+ H2) has been reported for hyperthermophilicThermococcusstrains. In this study, a hyperthermophilic archaeon,Thermococcus onnurineusstrain NA1, yielded H2accumulation to a partial pressure of 1 × 10<SUP>5</SUP>to 7 × 10<SUP>5</SUP>Pa until the values of Gibbs free energy change (Δ<I>G</I>) reached near thermodynamic equilibrium (−1 to −3 kJ mol<SUP>−1</SUP>). The bioenergetic requirement for the metabolism to conserve energy was demonstrated by Δ<I>G</I>values as small as −5 kJ mol<SUP>−1</SUP>, which are less than the biological minimum energy quantum, −20 kJ mol<SUP>−1</SUP>, as calculated by Schink (B. Schink, Microbiol. Mol. Biol. Rev. 61:262-280, 1997). Considering formate as a possible H2storage material, the H2production potential of the strain was assessed. The volumetric H2production rate increased linearly with increasing cell density, leading to 2,820 mmol liter<SUP>−1</SUP>h<SUP>−1</SUP>at an optical density at 600 nm (OD600) of 18.6, and resulted in the high specific H2production rates of 404 ± 6 mmol g<SUP>−1</SUP>h<SUP>−1</SUP>. The H2productivity indicates the great potential ofT. onnurineusstrain NA1 for practical application in comparison with H2-producing microbes. Our result demonstrates thatT. onnurineusstrain NA1 has a highly efficient metabolic system to thrive on formate in hydrothermal systems.</P>
