Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

The purpose of this study is to examine current status of elderly abuse by their own children. The study was performed with sample group of 385 people over 60 years old(Male: 135, Female: 2-50) Daegu city residents, who attended the senior welfare center. By categorizing specific type of abuse experience, the study showed B.l%(male: 25.2%, female: 22.0%) of verbal * psychological abuse, 4.9%(male: 3.7%, female: 5.6%) of permissive abuse, and 4.7%(male: 5.2%, female: 4.4%) of financial abuse. There was no record of physical abuse experience. In the review of elderly abuse experience following general characteristics, especially in case of female elderly, the difference in verbal psychological abuse experience was observed depending on the existence of spouse and composition of family. And there was also a difference in financial abuse experience related to health condition. In the study of elderly abuse experience according to the financial status, the female elderly who were a pool economic status had experienced comparatively high level of verbal . psychological abuse. In the review of reaction against abuse, direct confrontation(35.0%) was the most dominant among male elderly, however, majority of female elderly(56.5%) was found to be bear with the suffer . The main reason for such endurance was for the sake of own children . There was only one elderly(0.9%) who had ever reported to the police with abuse experience.
춘천에서 2002년 봄철 황사 발생기간 동안에 채취된 미세분진 중 무기성분의 특성

Yellow sand(YS) storms were observed about ten times in the Korean peninsula during March and April in 2002. Twenty four hour fine particle(PM_2.5) samples were collected onto the 47 mm Teflun-coated quartz filters over 9 days during and after the events using the MiniVol Portable Air Sampler at a flow rate of 5 liters per minute. The highest PM_2.5 concentration measured during the YS period was 289 μg/m³, which is 13 times higher than the lowest of the values for the samples collected during the non-yellow said period. The filter samples were analyzed for inorganic ions using the IC, AAS and Autoanalyzer, and for metals using the ICPMS. The results showed that the concentrations of some inorganic ions (e.g., Ca^2+ and SO_(4)^2-) and metals (e.g., Fe, Mn) of soil origin were elevated during the yellow sand events.
Dopamine promotes formation and secretion of non-fibrillar alpha-synuclein oligomers

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by selective and progressive degeneration of dopamine (DA)-producing neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and by abnormal aggregation of ${\alpha}$-synuclein. Previous studies have suggested that DA can interact with ${\alpha}$-synuclein, thus modulating the aggregation process of this protein; this interaction may account for the selective vulnerability of DA neurons in patients with PD. However, the relationship between DA and ${\alpha}$-synuclein, and the role in progressive degeneration of DA neurons remains elusive. We have shown that in the presence of DA, recombinant human ${\alpha}$-synuclein produces non-fibrillar, SDS-resistant oligomers, while ${\beta}$-sheet-rich fibril formation is inhibited. Pharmacologic elevation of the cytoplasmic DA level increased the formation of SDS-resistant oligomers in DA-producing neuronal cells. DA promoted ${\alpha}$-synuclein oligomerization in intracellular vesicles, but not in the cytosol. Furthermore, elevation of DA levels increased secretion of ${\alpha}$-synuclein oligomers to the extracellular space, but the secretion of monomers was not changed. DA-induced secretion of ${\alpha}$-synuclein oligomers may contribute to the progressive loss of the dopaminergic neuronal population and the pronounced neuroinflammation observed in the SNpc in patients with PD.

Effect of cobalt and rhodium promoter on NOx storage and reduction (NSR) kinetics was investigated over Pt/BaO/Al2O3. Kinetics of 2% cobalt loading over Pt/BaO/Al2O3 demonstrated highest NOx uptake during lean cycle, while reduction efficiency during rich cycle appeared most poor. In contrast to this, rhodium showed suppressing effect of NOx uptake during lean cycle and demonstrated an enhanced effect for the higher efficiency of NOx reduction during rich cycle. <P>Abnormal accumulation of alpha-synuclein (alpha-syn) has been linked to several neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the underlying mechanism by which alpha-syn accumulation affects neuronal function and survival remains unknown. Here, we provide data suggesting a possible effect of aggregated alpha-syn on the microtubule (MT) network. Consistent with the MT dysfunction, we also observed other degenerative changes, such as neuritic degeneration, trafficking defects, and Golgi fragmentation, which are common pathological features shared by many human neurodegenerative diseases. Neuritic degeneration and Golgi fragmentation were confirmed in primary cultures of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons overexpressing alpha-syn. This effect of alpha-syn seems to have some selectivity to the MT system, as actin microfilaments and MT-independent trafficking remain unaffected. Within the degenerating neurites, we found numerous spherical co-aggregates of alpha-syn and tubulins, from which actin was excluded. These studies suggest that the MT system is a potential target of alpha-syn, and impairment of this system might have impacts on neuronal structure and function.</P>
Determination of C-Terminal 관-Catenin Responsible for Inducing Dendritic Morphogenesis.

<P>관-Catenin induces dendritic morphogenesis in several cells and it was reported that deletion of C-terminal 207 amino acid of 관-catenin completely abolished the dendritic morphogenesis. However, exact domain responsible for inducing dendritic morphogenesis in C-terminus of 관-catenin was not mapped. Here, we report that expression of ??C47 (lacking 47 amino acid of C-terminus: 1-1200), ??C77 (lacking 77 amino acid of C-terminus: 1-1170) deletion mutants of 관-catenin induced the dendritic morphogenesis of HEK293T and NIH3T3 cells as full-length 관-catenin did. In agreement with previous report, ??C207 deletion mutant did not show the dendritic morphogenesis of the cells. Interestingly, introducing 107 amino acid deletion of C-terminus (??C107 mutant: 1-1140) and 177 amino acid deletion of C-terminus (??C177 mutant: 1-1070) showed limited primary and secondary dendritic process and notable spine-like process formation. These results suggest that 1140-1170 amino acid of C-terminal 관-catenin is required for primary and secondary dendrite-like process formation.</P>
