Effects of dietary energy sources on early postmortem muscle metabolism of finishing pigs

Objective: This study investigated the effects of different dietary energy sources on early postmortem muscle metabolism of finishing pigs. Methods: Seventy-two barrow (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire, DLY) pigs (65.0±2.0 kg) were allotted to three iso-energetic and iso-nitrogenous diets: A (44.1% starch, 5.9% crude fat, and 12.6% neutral detergent fibre [NDF]), B (37.6% starch, 9.5% crude fat, and 15.4% NDF) or C (30.9% starch, 14.3% crude fat, and 17.8% NDF). After the duration of 28-day feeding experiment, 24 pigs (eight per treatment) were slaughtered and the M. longissimus lumborum (LL) samples at 45 min postmortem were collected. Results: Compared with diet A, diet C resulted in greater adenosine triphosphate and decreased phosphocreatine (PCr) concentrations, greater activity of creatine kinase and reduced percentage bound activities of hexokinase (HK), and pyruvate kinase (PK) in LL muscles (p<0.05). Moreover, diet C decreased the phosphor-AKT level and increased the hydroxy-hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) level, as well as decreased the bound protein expressions of HK II, PKM2, and lactate dehydrogenase A (p<0.05). Conclusion: Diet C with the lowest level of starch and the highest levels of fat and NDF could enhance the PCr utilization and attenuate glycolysis early postmortem in LL muscle of finishing pigs.

The influence of dietary supplementation with a yeast culture on growth performance, fecal score and nutrient digestibility was evaluated in weaned pigs in a 6-week feeding trial. A total of 50 weaning pigs with an initial average body weight (BW) of 7.46 ± 1.60 kg were randomly allotted into 1 of 2 dietary treatments according to the initial BW. There were 5 replicate pens in each treatment with 5 pigs per pen. The dietary treatments were as follows: 1) control, basal diet (CON) and 2) 0.10% yeast culture, basal diet supplemented with 0.1% yeast culture (YC). The average daily feed intake was significantly improved with the dietary supplementation of the yeast culture compared with the control during phases 1 and 3. Overall (0 to 6 weeks), dietary supplementation with the 0.1% yeast culture had a significant effect on the feed conversion ratio (FCR). There was no significant difference in the fecal score between the CON and YC dietary treatments. In addition, no difference in the apparent total tract digestibility was observed between the CON and YC dietary treatments. Collectively, the results of this study indicate that dietary supplementation of 0.1% yeast only improved the feed intake of weaning pigs; however, yeast culture supplementation did not affect the average daily gain, feed efficiency, total tract digestibility of dry matter, and nitrogen and energy levels as well as the fecal scores.

Microwave assisted sintering has attracted much attention due to the greatly reduced sintering time. In this work, for the first time, hydroxyapatite (HAp)-reinforced magnesium (Mg) composites were prepared by the microwave assisted sintering technique. The as-prepared HAp/Mg composites were characterized by mechanical and electrochemical tests, XRD analysis, and preliminary biological evaluation. Optical microscopy observation confirms the homogeneously distributed HAp particles in the Mg matrix. It is shown that the relative density of HAp/Mg composite with 10 wt% HAp can reach 96.5% after only 10 min microwave assisted sintering. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of HAp/Mg composites are significantly higher than those of pure Mg. The corrosion resistance of HAp/Mg composites evaluated by immersion and electrochemical measurements in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 C reveals significant improvement over pure Mg. It is demonstrated that the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biological behavior can be properly controlled by adjusting HAp content.
ZmFKBP20-1 improves the drought and salt tolerance of transformed Arabidopsis

FK506-binding proteins (FKBPs), which belongto the peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase superfamily, areinvolved in plant response to abiotic stresses. A number ofFKBP family genes have been isolated in plants, but littlehas been reported of FKBP genes in maize. In this study, adrought-induced FKBP gene, ZmFKBP20-1, was isolated frommaize and was characterized for its role in stress responsesusing gene expression, protein subcellular localization,transformation in Arabidopsis, expression patterns of thestress-responsive genes, and physiological parameter analysis. During drought and salt stresses, ZmFKBP20-1 transgenicArabidopsis plants exhibited enhanced tolerance, which wasconcomitant with the altered expression of stress/ABAresponsivegenes, such as COR15a, COR47, ERD10, RD22,KIN1, ABI1, and ABI2. The resistance characteristics ofZmFKBP20-1 overexpression were associated with a significantincrease in survival rate. These results suggested thatZmFKBP20-1 plays a positive role in drought and salt stressresponses in Arabidopsis and provided new insights into themechanisms of FKBP in response to abiotic stresses inplants.
Contact toxicity of a new acaricide, SYP-9625, to the natural predator, Chrysopa pallens

SYP-9625 is a novel acaricide synthesized by using cyenopyrafen as lead compound. It is characterized by high acaricidal activity and low toxicity to mammals and has been widely used in Chinese farming areas. However, to date, the toxicity of SYP-9625 to natural enemy insects remained unclear. Here, we evaluated the effects of SYP-9625 on survival, growth, metamorphosis and reproduction of a common natural predator, Chrysopa pallens. Contact toxicity bioassay revealed that SYP-9625 had no significant detrimental impacts on egg hatchability, larval survival and duration, pupation rate, pupal mass, emergence rate, digestive enzyme activity, reproductive output and offspring quality, but drastically reduced adult survival rate, adult lifespan, secondary follicle size and vitellogenin (Vg) transcripts by 27.8%, 15.4%, 33.4% and 59.4%, respectively, suggesting a low contact toxicity of SYP-9625 to C. pallens. This study will strengthen the compatibility of chemical acaricide and natural enemy insects in integrated pest management.
A Novel Multiobjective Optimization Method Based on Improved Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm

In order to improve the convergence and diversity of multiobjective optimization algorithms, the harmonic average distance is employed to improve the aggregating function combined L-rank value. Selection model and searching scheme of artificial bee colony algorithm and diversity maintaining scheme are improved in this paper. This novel many objectives optimization method based on improved artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC) in this paper is compared with other three many objectives optimization methods on 3 to 8 objectives DTLZ. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to other algorithms in the diversity and convergence of solutions.
LINC00703 Acts as a Tumor Suppressor via Regulating miR-181a/KLF6 Axis in Gastric Cancer

Purpose: Long noncoding RNA 00703 (LINC00703) was found originating from a region downstream of Kruppel-like factor 6 (KLF6) gene, having 2 binding sites for miR-181a. Since KLF6 has been reported as a target of miR-181a in gastric cancer (GC), this study aims to investigate whether LINC00703 regulates the miR-181a/KLF6 axis and plays a functional role in GC pathogenesis. Materials and Methods: GC tissues, cell lines, and nude mice were included in this study. RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) and pull-down assays were used to evaluate interaction between LINC00703 and miR-181a. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot were applied for analysis of gene expression at the transcriptional and protein levels. A nude xenograft mouse model was used to determine LINC00703 function in vivo. Results: We revealed that LINC00703 competitively interacts with miR-181a to regulate KLF6. Overexpression of LINC00703 inhibited cell proliferation, migration/invasion, but promoted apoptosis in vitro, and arrested tumor growth in vivo. LINC00703 expression was found to be decreased in GC tissues, which was positively correlated with KLF6, but negatively with the miR-181a levels. Conclusions: LINC00703 may have an anti-cancer function via modulation of the miR-181a/KLF6 axis. This study also provides a new potential diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for GC treatment.
