Sulfonylureas are widely used as an antidiabetic drug. In the present study, the effects of sulfonylurea administered supraspinally on immobilization stress-induced blood glucose level were studied in ICR mice. Mice were once enforced into immobilization stress for 30 min and returned to the cage. The blood glucose level was measured 30, 60, and 120 min after immobilization stress initiation. We found that intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection with $30{\mu}g$ of glyburide, glipizide, glimepiride or tolazamide attenuated the increased blood glucose level induced by immobilization stress. Immobilization stress causes an elevation of the blood corticosterone and insulin levels. Sulfonylureas pretreated i.c.v. caused a further elevation of the blood corticosterone level when mice were forced into the stress. In addition, sulfonylureas pretreated i.c.v. alone caused an elevation of the plasma insulin level. Furthermore, immobilization stress-induced insulin level was reduced by i.c.v. pretreated sulfonylureas. Our results suggest that lowering effect of sulfonylureas administered supraspinally against immobilization stress-induced increase of the blood glucose level appears to be primarily mediated via elevation of the plasma insulin level.

Abstract

Compelling evidence suggests that far-infrared ray (FIR) possesses beneficial effects on emotional disorders. However, the underlying mechanism conveyed by FIR remains unclear. Recently, we demonstrated that exposure to FIR induces antioxidant potentials via up-regulation of glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-1 gene. The antioxidant potentials might be important for the modulation on the neuropsychotoxic conditions. Exposure to FIR protects from methamphetamine (MA)-induced memory impairments via phosphorylation of ERK 1/2 signaling by positive modulation of protein kinase C δ (PKCδ), M1 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (M1 mAChR), and nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) transcription factor. In addition, exposure to FIR positively modulates MA-induced behavioral sensitization via attenuating mitochondrial dysfunction by down-regulation of dopamine D1 receptor. In this mini-review, we have discussed with the protective potentials mediated by FIR against MA-induced psychotoxic burdens.

Highlights

Far-infrared ray (FIR) protects from methamphetamine (MA)-induced psychotoxicity.

FIR induces antioxidant potentials via up-regulation of glutathione peroxidase-1.

FIR attenuates MA memory loss via ERK 1/2 by modulation of PKCδ, M1 mAChR, and Nrf2.

Nitric oxide suppresses L-type calcium currents in basilar artery smooth muscle cells in rabbits

Nitric oxide (NO) is well known to be a vasodilator, and NO donor compounds are currently used for treating vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage. However, the action mechanism of cerebral vascular relaxation is not yet clear. L-type calcium channels have been determined to play an essential role in smooth muscle contraction. To investigate the role of L-type calcium channels in NO-induced relaxation of basilar smooth muscle cells, we examined the effect of the NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on calcium (Ca2+) currents using smooth muscle cells isolated from a rabbit basilar artery.

Effects of histamine receptors agonists or antagonists administered centrally (supraspinally or spinally) on immobilization stress-induced blood glucose levels were studied in Institute for Cancer Research mice. Mice were pretreated intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) or intrathecally (i.t.) with histamine (H1, H2, H3 and H4) receptor agonists or antagonists 10 min prior to immobilization stress (IMO) stimulation for 30 min. We found that the increased blood glucose level induced by IMO was attenuated by the i.c.v. pretreatment with α-methylhistamine (H3 agonist). However, H3 antagonist, H1, H2 and H4 receptor agonists and antagonists did not affect the blood glucose level. Also, i.t. pretreatment with α- methylhistamine or VUF 8430 attenuated the increased blood glucose level induced by IMO. In addition, cetirizine and carcinine enhanced the increased blood glucose level induced by IMO. However, the blood glucose level was not affected by H1 and H2 receptor agonists, H2 and H4 receptor antagonists. Corticosterone and insulin levels were also measured in α-methylhistamine (i.c.v or i.t) and with VUF 8430, carcinine and cetirizine (i.t.) treated group. We found that the corticosterone level was increased only by i.t treatment with α-methylhistamine, whereas the insulin level was attenuated by i.c.v or i.t. treatment with α-methylhistamine and i.t treatment with VUF 8430, carcinine and cetirizine. Our results suggest the active involvement of histamine receptor in blood glucose regulation in IMO.

Although magnesium is a well-known treatment for vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage, its mechanism of action for cerebral vascular relaxation is not clear. In addition, it is known that L-type calcium (Ca(2+)) channels play a pivotal role in smooth muscle contraction. To investigate the role of L-type Ca(2+) channels in the magnesium-induced relaxation of basilar smooth muscle cells, we examined the effect of magnesium sulfate on L-type Ca(2+) currents using freshly isolated smooth muscle cells from rabbit basilar arteries.

Neural Network Based Hybrid Force/Position Control for Robot Manipulators

This paper presents a neural network based adaptive control scheme for hybrid force/position control for rigid robot manipulators. Firstly the robot dynamics is decomposed into force, position and redundant joint subspaces. Based on this decomposition, a neural network based controller is proposed that achieves the stability in the sense of Lyapunov for desired interaction force between the end-effector and the environment as well as regulate robot tip position in cartesian space. A feedforward neural network is employed to learn the parametric uncertainties, existing in the dynamical model of the robot manipulator. Finally numerical simulation studies are carried out for a two link rigid robot manipulator.
Metastatic carcinoma of cervix mimicking psoas abscess on imaging: a case report
Naveen Kalra,Senthilkumar Aiyappan,Raje Nijhawan,S.C. Sharma,Niranjan Khandelwal 대한부인종양학회 2009 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.20 No.2
Cervical cancer can be presented as an unusual and aggressive manner in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)- positive women. There are case reports of psoas abscess which mimick metastasis from cervical carcinoma in HIV-positive patients. However, such cases are very rare in HIV-negative women with only few case reports available in the literature. We report one case of psoas abscess mimicking metastasis in a HIV-negative woman, which was initially diagnosed as spinal tuberculosis. During a 4-year period (2001-2005) 09 animals were surgically treated because of abdominal wall defects (hernia). Out of 9 animals 8 were bovines and one caprine. In each case the defect was repaired with carbon fibre mesh. All the cases were successfully treated and no complication was observed up to six months postoperatively.
