        Reconstruction of Rabbit Corneal Epithelium on Lyophilized Amniotic Membrane Using the Tilting Dynamic Culture Method

        <P>Abstract: </P><P>Rabbit corneal epithelium was reconstructed using tilting dynamic culture with a self-manufactured, amniotic membrane (AM) supporter and a lyophilized amniotic membrane (LAM). Rabbit corneal epithelial (RCE) cells were cultured and cryopreserved after isolation from the limbus. The second- and third-passage RCE cells were plated onto the epithelial side of the LAM of Ahn's AM supporter. Two days later, the air–liquid interface culture was maintained with third-passage RCE cells for 6 days and second-passage corneal epithelial cells for 9 days. The average viability of thawed RCE cells, assessed using trypan blue dye exclusion, was 77.42%. The reconstructed corneal epithelium was characterized by histological (hematoxylin and eosin) and immunohistochemical staining (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) for light microscopy, and by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, glucose assay, and transmission electron microscopy. The basal layer of the reconstructed corneal epithelium was well formed, and the epithelium was tightly constructed due to the increase in cell proliferation and differentiation caused by the tilting dynamic culture, as opposed to static culture. Tilting dynamic culture was useful for the reconstruction of the epithelium using easily damaged epithelial cells and resulted in more stratum cell layers. Moreover, cytokeratin (CK3) mRNA expression in tilting dynamic cultured third-passage RCE cells seeded onto AM was greater than in static cultured third-passage RCE cells. The morphology of the reconstructed corneal epithelium on LAM by tilting dynamic culture for 9 days resembled that of the skin epidermis. This was thought to be because the tilting dynamic culture not only accelerated the proliferation and differentiation of cells by physical or mechanical stimulation, but also ensured that the supply of medium was delivered to the basal cells more efficiently. Thus, the reconstruction of the corneal epithelium using LAM and tilting dynamic culture was considered to be a good in vitro model for autologous or allogeneic transplantation of corneal epithelium and skin epidermis in patients with damaged epithelia. </P>

        The applicability of the liquid surfactant membrane process using LIX-841 as an extractant to extraction and concentration copper from waste water solutions was investigated. In this study, it was oberserved that the extraction rate of copper was greatly accelerated by the presence of sodium acetate and with the increase of pH in the aqueous feed solution. The optimum concentrations of LIX 841 and SPAN 80 in the membrane phase were about 7-10 Vol.%, 2.5-3 Vol.% respectively. Experiments also showed that the concentration ratio of copper was greatly enhanced with the decrease of the ratio of Ve to Vw and with the decreasing A/O ratio. After the extraction process, the concentration of copper in the raffinate solution reduced to 1-2 ppm, and the concentration of copper in the internal aqueous solution increased to 20g/l.

        "Blow-out골절"의 임상적 고찰(54례)

        This retrospective study includes consecutive 54 Blow-out fractures patients to whom underwent surgical correction (June 1988-Feb 1994) and 25 patients have been followed up for more than 1 year. The diagnoses of blow out fracture was made through a physical examination, X-ray, and CT and It is confirmed at the time of surgery. Initial physical examination revealed limitation of ocular motion and diplopia in all 25 patients, and infraorbial nerve hypoestesia in 18 patients, and enophthalmos in 1 patient. There were 27 patients who had associated ocular injury including subconjunctival hemorrhage, angle recession and iris sphincter damage. and the three most common causes of blow-out fractures were traffic accident, fist blow and fall down. The latent period between injury and surgical intervention was average of 8 days and the longest time was 12 days. Surgical approach was done by subciliary incision and autogenous (10 cases) or synthetic (37 cases) implant was inserted over the fracture site in 47 patients. The floor and medial wall of orbit were the frequent site of blow-out fracture in this retrospective study. Among 28 patients who have been followed up for more than 1 year, 3 patients had diplopia persistently which developed only when the patient was tired, and 5 patients had late developed enophthalmos. We found that early surgical reduction of blow-out fracture with implant gave a favorable results without any significant complications.

      • 무산소-호기 반응기의 유기물과 질소 제거모델 개발

        본 논문은 무산소-호기 유동상 반응기에서 폐수의 유기물과 질소제거에 관한 것을 나타내었으며, 이 공정은 두 개의 반응기 안에서 질산화와 탈질화로 얻어지는 제거율 결과를 모형화하여 검토하였다. 무산소조의 미생물 농도가 모형식으로 표현되면 -2079.898V2 - 202.2029(H/A) + 1123이고, BOD removal = -0.00613 HRT2 + 0.4014HRT + 46.993 and NO3-N removal = -0.0029 HRT2 + 0.1872 HRT + 77.45 로 각각 표현되어진다. 이러한 실험치는 모형치와 비슷한 값을 가진다고 할 수 있으며, 이 결과는 다른 방법에도 적용이 가능하다고 판단된다. This paper aims to get rid of BOD and nitrogen in wastewater as the anoxic-aerobic fluidized bed. The process for the removal of nitrogen consists of nitrification and denitrification in two reactors. The estimated formula for, Anoxic are Biomass concentration = -2079.898V2- 202.2029(H/A) + 1123, BOD removal = -0.00613 HRT2 + 0.4014HRT + 46.993 and NO3-N removal = -0.0029 HRT2 + 0.1872 HRT + 77.45. The experimental values are similar to values of estimated formula. Therefore, this result is able to adapt the other cases.

      • 경추 추간판 탈출증의 치료

        We would like to compare the case of treatment using surgical operation with the case of treatment using conservative method to the patients who are diagnosed as cervical disc herniation. This study has been done with each 21 and 83 patients who were available for 1 year -100 patients who had cervical disc herniation were treated with surgical operation and 175 patients were treated with conservative treatment in Chungnam National University Hospital. Each of convalescence were compared to odom's criteria along with the age of outbreak of illness, numbers of diseased segments, which is calculated by loss of radiating pain, subjective satisfaction, and return to their job. The group who are over 60 years old, surgical treatment had positive result. Also the group who are under 60 years old, conservative treatment had positive result. Radiculopathy due to cervical disc herniation had good result by surgical treatment when the patient is over 60 years old and has a few diseased segments. Therefore, it is considered that we should take a cautious attitude in choice of treatment.

      • 接觸安定法을 이용한 糞尿處理에 관한 硏究

        本 硏究에서는 연구책임자의 學述的 硏究經驗을 토대로 하여 보다 나은 處理工程을 다음과 같이 개발하였다. 旣存의 糞尿處理場 1次處理工程인 好氣性消化槽를 接觸槽와 安定槽로 분리하고 2次沈澱池에서 배출되는 返送슬러지를 全部 安定槽로 流入시켜 安定化시킨후 接觸槽로 보내는 接觸安定法의 工程으로 改造하고 流入糞尿 1對 稀釋水8의 比率로 糞尿를 流入시키며 實驗考察한 결과 97%이상의 處理效率을 얻었고 惡臭가 거의 발생하지 않은 쾌적한 環境이 되었다. In this study, the researchers found the better treatment process of nightsoil treatment plant on the basis of the responsible researcher's academic experience. The first treatment process, that is, aerobic digester of the existing nightsoil treatment plant is separated into the contact tank and the stabilization tank. And all the return sludge which discharge from the final sedimentation tank is folloed in the stabilization tank and is kept the stabilization situation there Afterwards, it is sent to the contact tank. The researchers remodeled as these contact stabilization processes and put in the contact tank at rate of inflow nightsoil one to diluted water eight. The results of above practical experiences showed the effective treatment above 95 percents and the comfortable environment with few foul ordor.

        사비의 교정에 있어서 내시경의 이용

        Owing to the complexity of the deviated structures and the septal deformities accompanying the external nasal deformities, the complete correction of the deviated nose is regarded as a difficult one. The approach to the nasal bone and osteotomy in classic corrective rhinoplasty is almost blind technique, where the results depends on the feeling by surgeon's hand. To overcome these drawback, endoscopic-assisted corrective rhinoplasty and septoplasty performed for 8 cases of deviated nose between January 1996 and May 1997. Average follow-up period was 10 months. All patients were evaluated by symmetrical nasal pyramid, recurrence of the bony deflection and septal deviation. The postoperative courses were satisfactory in most of cases with few complications. It appears that endoscopic control during corrective rhinoplasty and septoplasty is a big step toward obtaining better results in bony and cartilage resection with extreme precision under monitor control and magnification. This technique is not an open approach but permits one to see more of the nasal skeleton and bony septum what is causing deformity, and the immediate effect of the corrective measures used. The use of endoscope in corrective rhinoplasty will provide expanded field of vision, direct manipulation of lesions, and better aesthetic an6 functional results.

        내시경을 이용한 관골궁골절 정복술

        Although the zygomatic arch can be employed as a key landmark to the accurate alignment of a displaced zygoma fracture, it has been traditionally avoided because of the need for a bicoronal incision. Exposure of the zygomatic arch by means of the conventional bicoronal incision has several possible disadvantages, including an increased risk of blood loss, alopecia, loss of sensation posterior to the incision, and traction palsy of the facial nerve. Endoscopic-assisted exposure of a zygomatic arch can largely obviate the disadvantages of a bicoronal incision and yield this site accessible to reduction and internal fixation in the routine treatment of displaced zygoma fractures. 9 cases of endoscope-assisted open reduction of zygomatic arch fracture and 3 cases of internal fixation of a moderately displaced zygoma fracture are presented. To accomplish this technique, a rigid 4 mm, 30 degree down-angled endoscope, trocar and cannula, endoscopic forehead lift instrument were used. The postoperative courses were satisfactory with few complications. The use of endoscope in the treatment of zygoma reduction provided an expanded field of vision, direct manipulation of lesions, minimal postoperative scar. In particular, exposure and fixation of the zygomatic arch were performed without the need for a bicoronal incision.
