Dissolved Pb Concentrations and Stable Pb Isotope Ratios in the Ulleung Basin, East/Japan Sea

The spatial distributions of dissolved lead (Pb) concentrations and stable Pb isotope ratios in the Ulleung Basin, East/Japan Sea, were investigated to identify the Pb source, the behavior of Pb in seawater, and the relationship between Pb isotopes and water masses. The Pb concentrations showed a surface maximum and rapidly decreased with increasing water depth. In the slope area, Pb concentrations increased near the seafloor due to diffusive flux from the sediments. The Pb concentrations in the surface layer were higher than in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and western Philippine Sea due to the proximity and downwind location of the sampling site from a Pb source area. The bottom Pb concentrations were lower in the study area than in the open ocean, indicating a higher scavenging rate due to the presence of well-developed bottom boundary layers from the continental slope to the basin. The Pb isotope ratios obtained from the continental slope and basin area were relatively constant among water masses. The Pb isotope ratios in the surface layer were similar to those of coal from northern China, which may indicate Pb supply from coal combustion in China. Meanwhile, Pb in the bottom water had a similar isotopic signature to Russian ore deposits and coal, indicating that bottom Pb is associated with thermohaline circulation in the East/Japan Sea. The Pb isotope ratios of the intermediate layer were constant across the depths of East Sea Central Water (ESCW) and were similar to aerosols measured previously (in 2003–2004) around Ulleung Island, which may indicate the timing of ESCW formation.
Expressions of Uroplakins in the Mouse Urinary Bladder with Cyclophosphamide-Induced Cystitis

Even though uroplakins (UPs) are believed to serve a strong protective barrier against toxic materials, cyclophosphamide (CP) causes extensive cystitis. We investigated the expression of UPs in the urothelium in CP induced mouse cystitis. A total of 27 ICR female mice received a single intraperitoneal injection of 200 ㎎ CP/㎏. Nine CP-treated mice and 6 controls were sequentially killed at 12, 24, and 72 hr post injection. Extensive cystitis and an increased vesical weight were seen. These all peaked within 12 hr post injection and they tended to decrease thereafter. The level of all the UPs mRNA, the protein expressions of UP II and III on immunoblotting study, and the expression of UP III on immunolocalization study were maximally suppressed within 12 hr; this partially recovered at 24 hr, and this completely recovered at 72 hr post CP injection. In conclusion, CP reduced the expression of UPs. The reduction of the UPs mRNA and protein was time dependent, and this peaked within 12 hr after CP injection. However, the damage was rapidly repaired within 24 hr. This study demonstrates a dynamic process, an extensive reduction and rapid recovery, for the UPs expression of the mouse urinary bladder after CP injection.

This paper describes about the printed character segmentation and recognition system for slabs in steel manufacturing process. To increase the recognition rate, it is important to improve success rate of character segmentation. Since Slabs' front area surface are not uniform and surface temperature is very high, marked characters not only undergo damages but also have much noise. On the other hand, since almost marked characters are very thick and the space between characters is only about 10 ~ 15 ㎜, there are many touching characters. Therefore appropriate character image preprocessing and segmentation algorithm is needed. In this paper we propose a multi-local thresholding method for damaged character restoration, a modified touching character segmentation algorithm for marked characters. Finally a effective Multi-Class SVM is used to recognize segmented characters.

Recently, algorithms for character segmentation mainly deal with trouble about segmenting touching character or overlapping character[1]. The trouble often occurs in handwritten text regions. To overcome this problem, many researchers have proposed various algorithms, but these previous invented algorithms are not suitable to apply to handwritten text regions on the slabs in steel images. Because the text regions are affected by strong illumination, noise and loss of character. It is necessary to the algorithm for gaining high success rate in various case. This paper proposes robust character segmentation and recognition algorithm for various handwritten text regions of product number marked on slab in steel images. We use min-path-profile for segmenting overlapping character, and water reservoir concept[2] for segmenting touching character. The proposed algorithm is proper to segmentation and recognition of the handwritten text region on the slab in steel image.

There are many algorithm about character segmentation[1]. Many people have been making researches in segmentation of touching and overlapped character up to now, but most of algorithms cannot apply to test region on the slab in steel image. Because, text regions of product number marked on slab in steel images are irregular such as touched character by strong illumination and by trouble of nozzle in marking machine, and loss of character. It is difficult to gain high success rate in all cases. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm of character segmentation. In pre-processing step, contrast and brightness information are used. Then, we use combined profile to find character segmentation in the points by using multi-stage graph search algorithm[2]. The last, we decide real characters based on recognition. The proposed algorithm is effective for character segmentation of text region on the slab in steel image.
Use of Pb Isotopes to Track the Sources of Sediment Metals in Youngilν Bay, Korea and Offshore

Metals contaminating coastal sediments can be transported offshore, which is important to consider when devising management plans. This study investigated whether sediments in Youngil Bay contaminated by metals from industries along the coast were transported offshore. Heavy metals, stable Pb isotopes, and 210Pbex were analyzed in six box core samples. Two groups of core samples were distinguished based on their metal profiles and Pb isotopes. Core sediments in the southern region (EC8 ~ EC10) originated from the Nakdong River and Chinese rivers, and admixed with metals from nonferrous refineries in Ulsan Bay. Core sediments in the northeastern region samples (EC11 and B05) were the same as in the inner bay sample (EC12), in terms of both metal enrichment and the Pb isotopes in their upper layers (sediments deposited after 1970). This suggests that Pb isotopes can be used to determine whether contaminants in the inner bay are transported offshore, and where they are transported to.
