        The Rise of New Studies and Approaches in Korean Buddhism

        Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, a major shift has been witnessed in the research topics of Korean Buddhist Studies. Instead of remaining fixated on Buddhism in the Three Kingdoms period, scholars have switched the bulk of their attention towards Buddhism during the Chosŏn dynasty (1392–1910). Moreover, not only has the timeframe of scholarly interest shifted, but scholars have also come to redefine the study of religion more broadly. Rather than continuing to regard Buddhism as only an elitist venture, research now encompasses all human experiences related to the Buddhist tradition, particularly lay Buddhist practices of both male and female commoners. As a result, Buddhist practitioners who previously received very little, if any, scholarly attention are now in the limelight. Of course, we must not forget that such remarkable changes were brought about by both a shift in scholarly interest and more importantly by the discovery of new source materials, both domestically and internationally. Furthermore, the digitization of source materials and archives, along with research projects sponsored by the Korean government, have all contributed to bringing about a series of notable academic works to fruition. In highlighting some of these latest examples, this paper will analyze not only the current trends, but also gauge where and what the field is likely to explore in the future.

        다중선형회귀모형에 의한 지표면 광대역 방출율 산출

        In this study, the surface broadband emissivity (3.0-14.0 μm) was calculated using the multiple linear regression model with narrow bands (channels 29, 30, and 31) emissivity data of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Earth Observing System Terra satellite. The 307 types of spectral emissivity data (123 soil types, 32 vegetation types, 19 types of water bodies, 43 manmade materials, and 90 rock) with MODIS University of California Santa Barbara emissivity library and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission & Reflection Radiometer spectral library were used as the spectral emissivity data for the derivation and verification of the multiple linear regression model. The derived determination coefficient (R 2 ) of multiple linear regression model had a high value of 0.95 (p<0.001) and the root mean square error between these model calculated and theoretical broadband emissivities was 0.0070. The surface broadband emissivity from our multiple linear regression model was comparable with that by Wang et al. (2005). The root mean square error between surface broadband emissivities calculated by models in this study and by Wang et al. (2005) during January was 0.0054 in Asia, Africa, and Oceania regions. The minimum and maximum differences of surface broadband emissivities between two model results were 0.0027 and 0.0067 respectively. The similar statistical results were also derived for August. The surface broadband emissivities by our multiple linear regression model could thus be acceptable. However, the various regression models according to different land covers need be applied for the more accurate calculation of the surface broadband emissivities 이 연구에서는 Earth Observing System Terra 위성에 탑재된 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 협대역 방출율(채널 29, 30, 31) 자료와 다중선형회귀모형을 이용하여 지표면 광대역 방출율을 추정하였다. 다중선형회귀모형 도출 및 검증을 위한 분광 방출율 자료는 MODIS University of California, Santa Barbara와Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer spectral library 의 307종(토양 123종, 식생 32종, 물 19종, 인위적 재료 43종, 바위 90종)을 사용하였다. 도출된 다중선형회귀모형의 결정계수(R 2 )는 0.95 (p< .001)로 높게 나타났고 또한 이 모형 결과와 이론적 광대역 방출율 값의 평균제곱근오차(Root Mean Square Error)는 0.0070이었다. 그리고 이 연구 결과에 따라 계산된 지표면 광대역 방출율을 선행 연구 Wang et al. (2005)의 결과와 비교하였다. 그 결과 아시아, 아프리카, 오세아니아 지역에서 이 연구와 Wang et al. (2005)의 결과에 대한 1월 평균 지표면 광대역방출율의 평균제곱근오차는 0.0054이었고 최소와 최대 편차는 각각 0.0027과 0.0067이었으며 이러한 통계 값은 8월에도 유사하였다. 이 연구에서 다중선형회귀모형에 의하여 계산한 지표면 광대역 방출율은 Wang et al. (2005)의 값과 큰차이가 없이 비교적 정확하게 산출되었으나 산출 정확성 향상을 위해서는 토지피복특성에 따른 차별화된 회귀모형 적용 필요성이 제기된다.

        21년간 한국의 서리발생 시⋅공간 분포 특성과 경향

        In order to actively prepare to frost damage that occurs in the process of growing crops, the spatial and temporal distribution of frost occurrence in South Korea was derived using frost observation data from 20 regions over the past 21 years (2000∼2020). The main products are the number of frost days, first frost day, and last frost day by region. And the climatic trends of these results were identified by performing the Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen’s slope estimator. In South Korea, a lot of frost occurs in the inland area to the west of the Taebaek and Sobaek Mountains. Relatively closer to the coastal area, the number of frost days is small, the first frost day is slow, and the last frost day is early. The east coast region has fewer frost days, the first frost day is later, and the last frost day is earlier than the west coast region. The southern sea, the southeastern sea region, and the island region rarely experience frost. As a result of the annual time series trend analysis, although South Korea is a country where climate warming is progressing, there was no trend in reducing the number of frost days and slowing the first frost day, and it was found that the last frost day is delayed by 0.5 days per year. 농작물 생육 과정에서 서리에 의한 동상해 피해에 능동적으로 대비하기 위해, 지난 21년간(2000∼2020) 20개 지역의 서리관측 자료를 이용하여 한국 서리발생의 시공간적 분포 특성을 살폈다. 지역별 서리분포 특성은 서리일수, 첫 서리일, 끝 서리일로 표현하였다. 그리고 이러한 결과의 기후 경향은 Mann-Kendall trend test와 Sen’s slope estimator를 수행하여 확인하였다. 한국에서 대부분의 서리는 태백산맥과 소백산맥 서쪽 내륙지방에서 발생한다. 상대적으로 해안지역에 가까울수록 서리 발생일이 적고 첫서리일이 느리며 끝 서리일이 빠르다. 동해안지역은 서해안지역보다 서리일수가 적고 첫서리일이 느리며 끝서리일이 빠르다. 남해, 남동해, 도서지역은 거의 서리가 발생하지 않는다. 연간 시계열 추이 분석결과 한국은 기후온난화가 진행됨에도 불구하고, 서리일수가 줄어들거나 첫서리일이 늦춰지는 경향은 나타나지 않았으며, 끝서리일은 1년에 0.5일씩 늦춰지는 것으로 나타났다.

        Pak Chonghong’s Philosophical Analysis of Korean Buddhism and His Steps Towards Establishing an Eastern Philosophy

        Modern expansion in the scope of philosophy began an ongoing philosophicalintrospection into traditional Korean thought and Korean Buddhism, how theycan be defined, and what they mean. Yŏram Pak Chonghong (1903–1976) was aseminal figure who initiated this effort by making a groundbreaking proclamationfor the existence of a distinct Korean thought and identity. By proclaiming that thepast critically informed the present and vice versa, he tried to renew and revitalizethe Korean philosophy of the past, which had been locked away and displayed as anartifact or fossil, transforming it into a relevant, living philosophy of the present. Onthe other hand, he was a dedicated scholar of Korean thought who explored its practicalboundaries and content. He published works on Wŏnhyo and other Korean Buddhistphilosophers, as well as T’oegye and other Korean Confucians. Pak pointed to KoreanConfucianism and Buddhism as treasures awaiting excavation — and the need for anew methodological tool that could integrate Korean thought with the concepts andlogical methods of Western philosophy. These efforts firmly placed Korean thought — andby extension, Eastern philosophy — on the shelf of philosophy as a discipline. Thebreadth of sources and the scrutiny he gave them in his work set the standard of KoreanBuddhist scholarship that was unmatched for some time.
