2000 Journal of Soonchunhyang Medical Science Vol.6 No.2

Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance can provide information needs for empirical therapy of antimicrobial agents and for control of resistance. To determine the trend of antimicrobial resistance in Soonchunhyang Chunan Hospital, we analyzed in vitro susceptibility and identification data in 1998 and 1999. The results showed that cefoxitin-resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae and 3rd-generation cephalosporin-resistant K. pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, and Serratia marcescens were prevalent, that fluoroquinolone-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii had increased, and imipenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa were prevalent. Oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and penicillin-resistant pneumococci were prevalent. An increase of imipenem-resistant P. aeruginosa and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium is a new obvious threat. To prevent the spread of multi-resistant bacteria and the emergence of new resistance, continuous monitoring of antimicrobial resistance, appropriate use of antibiotics, and control of nosocomial infection are necessary.

Vol.65 No.8

Background: The dissemination of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen is of major public health concern as it leads to increased mortality rate, length of hospital stays, and medical expenses. Current Concepts: Korean Government enacted an Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act in 2009, and 6 MDR bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) have been legally declared as infectious diseases. According to the amendment of the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act in 2020, CRE and VRSA were classified as class 2 infectious diseases, and all cases of CRE and VRSA should be reported to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). Methicillin-resistant S. aureus, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa, and multidrug-resistant A. baumannii were classified as class 4 infectious diseases, and cases that occur need to be monitored at KDCA-designated sentinel hospitals to prevent further dissemination. Discussion and Conclusion: In this review, the current antimicrobial resistance status of six types of MDR bacteria, legally declared as infectious diseases, was investigated.. The Korean government is operating national antimicrobial resistance surveillance systems such as the Korean Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System and Korean Global Antimicrobial Surveillance System, as a foundation for preventing the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Certain steps need to be taken, such as establishing a surveillance system for antimicrobial usages, strengthening antimicrobial stewardship and infection control systems, and developing new antimicrobials in order for us to achieve the national goal.

Vol.24 No.3

Fire protection countermeasure were considered on the straw thatched roof and wooden structure. For the fire resistant treatment, rice straw was soaked in the fire resistant liquid with different soaking time. After treatment, some rice straw sample was washed with water then the rice straws were tested to check the fire resistance performance. And the wood was soaked in the fire resistant liquid at an atmospheric pressure, vacuum-pressure condition and painted with brush on the surface. To analyse the fire resistant performance of rice straw, ignition delay time was measured under the radiant heat flux of cone heater. And the fire resistant performance of wood samples were tested with 45 degree fire resistant test apparatus and cone heater. Based on the cone heater test, the rice straw which most easily ignitable material shows the longer ignition delay time than not treated ones and even in the water washed straw show a longer ignition delay time than not treated ones. And fire resistant treated woods of vacuum-pressure treated sample showed the most excellent performance on fire resistance. And the fire resistant treated by brush and soaking showed a longer ignition delay time than not treated ones. From this experiment, it was found that a fire resistant treatment of rice straw and wood of the house can be protected from the fire spread.

Vol.41 No.4

BACKGROUND: Although antibiotics have contributed to treatment of bacterial infection, the antibiotic abuse can lead to antibiotic resistant bacteria. Impact of human activities on distribution of antibiotic resistance has been intensively issued and occurrence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in contaminated environments would not be a surprise. Nonetheless, anthropogenic contamination with the dissemination of antibiotic resistance along uncontaminated environments has been less considered. The aim of this study is to investigate antibiotic resistant bacteria across Ulleungdo, known as antibiotic resistance free and anthropogenic pollution free environment in Rep. of Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: Antibiotic resistant bacteria in coastal seawater of Ulleungdo were investigated in July 2021. Antibiotic susceptibility test using the disk diffusion method was applied with six drugs according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guideline. Total 43 bacterial isolates were tested and 20 isolates among of them showed multidrug resistance. Particularly, the number and ratio of resistant bacteria were relatively high in a densely populated area of Ulleungdo. The bacterial communities were investigated using 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding approach in the coastal seawater and soils of Ulleungdo. In the bacterial communities, Firmicutes were selectively distributed only in seawater, suggesting the possibility of anthropogenic contamination in coastal seawater of Ulleungdo. CONCLUSION(S): We found antibiotic resistant bacteria in a populated area of Ulleungdo. The occurrence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in Ulleungdo seems to result from the recent anthropogenic impact. Consistent monitoring of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the uncontaminated environment needs to considered for future risk assessment of antibiotics.

Mode of Action of Streptomycin Resistance in the Citrus Canker Pathogen (Xanthomonas smithii subsp. citri) in Jeju Island

2012 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.28 No.2

It has been known that streptomycin resistance in bacteria can occur as a results of chromosomal mutation or through gene acquisition or both. Chromosomal mutations for resistances are point mutations in the rpsL gene, which alter ribosomal protein S12. Acquired resistance has occurred when an SmR plasmid carrying transposon Tn5393 with tandem strA-strB gene is transferred by conjugation. A total of 686 isolates of Xanthomonas smithii subsp. citri causal agent of citrus canker disease were collected from 26 citrus orchards in Jeju Island in 2003 and 2004 seasons. Forty-nine of 111 isolates from streptomycin non-sprayed orchards in 2003season were resistant to streptomycin. Of 107 isolates from orchards sprayed one time with streptomycin, 58isolates were resistant, and 166 of 221 isolates from orchards sprayed two times with streptomycin were resistant. In 12 orchards sprayed three or more times with streptomycin, 219 of 247 isolates were resistant to streptomycin. Twenty-five isolates of X. smithii subsp. citri were surveyed to identify the mechanisms of streptomycin resistance in this study. Twenty-one of these 25isolates were resistant to streptomycin, and it was proven by PCR assay that 18 of the 21 streptomycin resistant isolates have the strB gene. In sixteen of the 21streptomycin resistant isolates, it was occurred a point mutation altered codon lysine (AAG)-41 of rpsL gene to arginine (AGG). The streptomycin-sensitive isolates easily acquired the resistance by mixed culture with resistant isolates. The strB gene was amplified from the isolates that acquired the resistance by mixed culture, and one isolate of them was also point-mutated in codon 41 of rpsL gene to be resistant. In this study, most of the streptomycin-resistant isolates of X. smithii sub sp. citri in Jeju island expressed the resistance by both chromosomal point mutation and gene acquisition, and the resistance was easily acquired through conjugation by culture mixed with streptomycin resistant and sensitive strains.

      • Resistance-breaking ability and feeding behavior of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, recently collected in Korea

        Bo Yoon Seo,Jin Kyo Jung,Byeong-Reol Choi,Hyung Man Park Vol.2008 No.05

Resistance-breaking ability of wild brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, on resistant rice cultivars has been reported in many Asian countries. To understand the development of resistance-breaking ability of wild BPH in Korea, we conducted the nymphal survivorship test and the electrical penetration graph (EPG) on susceptible and resistant rice cultivars with four different BPH populations, which were collected in the early 1980s (S-BPH), 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively. The S-BPH showed low survival rates on resistant rice cultivars carrying Bph1 and bph2, respectively. On the other hand, recent(2005~2007) wild BPH populations seemed to have high resistance-breaking ability because they maintained elevated survival rates on most other resistant rice cultivars except Gayabyeo (Bph1 and bph2) and Rathu Heenati (Bph3). In the EPG monitoring, however, wild BPHs could not easily feed on the phloem sap of resistant rice cultivars, Cheongcheongbyeo (Bph1), ASD7 (bph2), and Gayabyeo. Wild BPHs spent more time on reaching the phloem sieve elements of resistant cultivars. Ph waveform duration and honeydew excretion amount of wild BPHs also decreased. From the results, we suggest that though recent wild BPHs collected in Korea have high resistance-breaking ability simultaneously on rice cultivars carrying Bph1 and bph2 through the increase of survivorship, they still have to pay some cost to feed on the phloem sap of resistant rice cultivars.

      • Drug resistant gastric cancer cells and their resistant mechanisms

2009 The Medical Journal of Chosun University Vol.33 No.S

Gastric cancer is the second leading cause of death from malignant disease over the world. The combination chemotherapies have been empirically selected without considering drug resistance. Therefore, it is necessary that we have to think about rationales of combination chemotherapies on the basis of drug resistance. A large number of cancer cells have been selected for resistance to various drugs and characterized with respect to drug resistant mechanisms for long time. Nevertheless, there is so far no review that has summarized human drug resistant gastric cancer cells and their resistant mechanisms in details. Here we summarize drug resistant gastric cancer cells with references in terms of tissue origin, publication year, nationality of an author, names of parental and drug resistant cells, resistance fold if possible and selecting drugs, and then discuss resistant mechanisms.
