Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze the effect that oral health literacy of adults has on perceived oral health state and to identify the factors that affect perceived oral health status. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey was distributed to 554 adults who lived in the Daegu or Gyeongbuk areas and visited dental institutions located in the Daegu area. For adults who were 60 years old or older, direct interviews were conducted. Statistical analysis was performed with t-tests, analysis of variance, and multiple regression using SPSS. Results: Between oral health literacy and perceived oral health status, a significant positive correlation was revealed (r=0.142, P<0.01). A significant positive correlation was revealed between oral health literacy and knowledge (r=0.397, P<0.01). A significant but weakly positive correlation was revealed between oral health knowledge and perceived oral health status (r=0.086, P<0.05). To identify factors affecting perceived oral health status, multiple regression analysis was conducted, and the result showed that oral health literacy was a statistically significant factor (b=0.105, P<0.05). Among general characteristics, age was a statistically significant negatively affecting factor, as it showed a negative relationship with perceived oral health status (β=―0.140, P=0.001, adjusted R2=0.049). Conclusions: When these study results are taken into consideration, oral health literacy is a factor affecting perceived oral health status, and as such, oral health literacy of the research targets should be taken into consideration when implementing oral health education to promote oral health.

Relationship between Perceived Oral Symptoms and Oral Health Status

        Seon-Ju Sim,Ji-Yoon Hwang,Yeo-Joo Yoon,Mina Park,Da-woon Jung,Ja-Young Moon 대한임상예방치과학회 2011 International Journal of Clinical Preventive Denti Vol.7 No.3

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived oral health and oral health status. Methods: The oral examination and survey data of 219 subjects over 40 years of age were analyzed. All individuals were interviewed by self-reporting questionnaire that focused on previous diseases, vascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetic mellitus, cardiac disease), smoking and drinking habits, social history, BMI, the frequency of daily tooth brushing and the presence of regular dental visits. Dental survey was conducted in relations to the number of teeth, DMFT index, and the pocket depth. Results: 1. Better perceived oral health status was likely to rate their periodontal conditions as good with more teeth remaining and less dental caries. 2. With increasing DMFT index, perceived oral health and periodontal conditions were rated poorly with a severe dry mouth experience. 3. With high CPITN index, perceived periodontal conditions were rated poorly with less number of teeth remaining and a severe dry mouth condition. 4. In a multivariate analysis adjusted for socioeconomic status, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, frequency of daily tooth brushing and regular dental visits, the better perceived oral health status is, the lower DMFT index is. Conclusion: Self-rated oral health is a simple measure and reflects not only the objective oral status but also the socioeconomic status and the psychological effects of oral health. Thus, we should actively use the perceived oral health criteria to promote the nation's oral health.

Relevance between Self-rated Oral Health and Oral Health Behaviors in Korean Adolescents : 2010 Korea Center for Disease Control

        Jin-Young Park,Seung-Chul Shin,Yong-Duk Park,Jong-Ae Chon,Ja-Won Cho 대한예방치과학회 2013 International Journal of Clinical Preventive Denti Vol.9 No.2

Objective: As health-related lifestyle habits formed in adolescence will determine his or her general health throughout the rest of the life, self-rated oral health formed during this period will also determine lifetime oral health behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine if self-rated oral health differed according to self-reported oral health behaviors in Korean adolescents. Methods: The raw data of 'The sixth Youth Health Behavior Online Survey' carried out by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention were analysed. Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Logistic regression analysis were used to assess the relationships between oral health behaviors and self-rated oral health (n=73,238). Results: Self-rated oral health differed according to self-reported daily toothbrushing habits. Oral health behaviors had stronger influence on daily toothbrushing habits. In particular, participants who brushed their teeth in the morning were 2.578 times more likely to have good self-rated oral health than subjects that did not brush their teeth in the morning (p<.001), and participants who brushed their teeth more than 3 times a day were 2.311 times more likely to have good self-rated oral health than those that brushed their teeth less than 3 times a day (p<.001). Conclusion: Korean adolescents with high self-rated oral health reported practicing good oral health behaviors. These results emphasize the need for the further practicable oral health education programs.

창원시와 함안군 지역주민들의 주관적 구강건강인식수준 조사

        윤현서,Yoon, Hyun-Seo 한국학교ㆍ지역보건교육학회 2018 한국학교지역보건교육학회지 Vol.19 No.1

The purpose of this study was to examine the levels of the subjective oral health awareness of local residents in the city of Changwon and Haman county in an effort to lay the foundation for the development of customized local oral health education programs. The 2015 community health survey data were used, and the data from 864 residents in Changwon and from 719 dwellers in Haman county were analyzed. The Changwon residents brushed their teeth after lunch more, received more oral checkups over the past year and had more scaling experience. The Haman residents had more experience of not receiving dental treatment. The subjective health awareness, subjective oral health awareness, chewing difficulty and periodontal health of the Haman dwellers were all worse, and all the levels of awareness were lower among the respondents who were older and who were diagnosed with hypertension and/or diabetes. The respondents who made use of dentures and who didn't brush their teeth after lunch had experience of not receiving dental treatment, and all the levels of health-related awareness were lower among the respondents who didn't receive dental checkups nor had scaling experience. To remedy the situation, efforts should be made to prevent and manage chronic diseases, and the establishment of a system that guarantees regular dental checkups and scaling is required. And the kind of environments that everybody can receive dental treatment when they want should be prepared. In order to change negative awareness, necessary measures should be taken to provide oral health education that is not temporary but sustainable and tailored to local characteristics and different life stages.
