Vol.25 No.3

Today, the concept of body is protean, that is accommodated and subjected by the late-capitalist society’s production and consumption system. Lookism is rampant and aesthetic capitalism has become faster in our society. Specifically, media messages about body works as socialization mechanism by people to perceive their own body. Therefore, this study examined the causal relation between perceived body surveillance of college students and body management behavior, and the moderator effect of media pressure of this causal relation. The college students who take academic liberal arts course in two different universities were surveyed. Simple regression and hierarchical regression analysis were performed to analyze the collected data using SPSS 18.0 The result showed the perceived body surveillance of college students had significant effect on the body management behavior. Furthermore, the media pressure had significant moderator effect on the causal relation between perceived body surveillance of college students and body management behavior. Suggestions for future research are offered.

Vol.22 No.1

The purpose of sports has recently been changed from ‘mind development’ to promote maturity in character to ‘body development’ for body fitness and wellness through the repetition of desirable body movements. Body development such as diet and bodybuilding are actually popularized at home, work, school and mass media and has academically emerged as a main concern. As a result, an academic field specialized in the body has come up. Therefore, physical education has the mission of the times to set up a new horizon and issues related to the body. Bodybuilding takes a very interesting part of a discourse on the body. The body developed through an exercise called 'bodybuilding' is not only an abstract body controlled by a discourse but also the concrete body realized through active practices called a moving body product. The study discussed three issues, what the philosophical meaning of the body in bodybuilding was, what the substance of bodybuilding as a body project was, and how the identity of bodybuilding could be secured. On the basis of the discussion, it presented three issues related to the identity of bodybuilding as a body project : materialization of a project as the movement to save the body; realization of the meaning of educational anthropology; and the symbol of performative self-management.

Vol.36 No.-

Body Movement Therapy pursuing convergence of body and mind is being developed through more diverse techniques. At present, the techniques that are registered in the International Somatic Movement Education & Therapy Association are about 22 types. These techniques are different according to their approach, but their common goal can be said as awareness of the body and body alignment on the basis of identity theory. Body Movement Therapy attaches great importance to connection and harmony between each part of the body for overall balance of the body rather than treatment or education of only one part of the body. It can be said that while pursing overall balance of the body, the most basic thing is breathing. During daily life or in the midst of performing dance movement, breathing represents the situation of the performer most exactly. Breathing influences not only on physical tension and relaxation but also on mental tension and relaxation. Physiological effects of breathing influence steadily on performance of large or small movements and expressional ability as well as even on stationary condition of movement. The objective of this study is to compare and analyze how diverse techniques of Body Movement Therapy suggest the principle and application of breathing. The techniques of Body Movement Therapy to be compared and analyzed in this study are Bartenieff?Fundamentals,?Pilates and Topf?Technique. These techniques were applied to the field of dance for effective performance of choreography and movements from the beginning of their development. And they are also properly used by dancers requiring convergence of body and mind. In order to achieve the objective of this study, first of all, the researcher intends to study the concept of breathing and then argues the principle and methods being suggested by each technique of body movement therapy. In addition, the researcher also intends to compare and analyze the principle of breathing that appear in the above three techniques.

Vol.45 No.1

This study classified short adult male body types and identified characteristics by body type according to Size Korea's 7th human system measurement data for men in their 20s to 60s. There were four body types for short adult males. Type 1 was a ‘short bird legs-normal body shape’ with an average body size, low body height, short torso length, thin legs, and no sagging shoulders. Type 2 was a ‘short torso thin body’ with a small body size, a slim body, a high body height, a short torso length and no sagging shoulders. Type 3 was a ‘thick leg-overweight body shape’ with a large body size, thick legs, low body height, small shoulder length and obesity. Type 4 was a ‘long bird legs-normal body’ with a normal body size, high body height, thin legs, long torso and sagging shoulders. The development of clothing design and pattern reflecting the body shape characteristics of short adult males should be improved to fit clothing and suitability. It is necessary to increase the satisfaction of ready-to-wear for consumers with various body types by adding the size for shorter men through a subdivision of the ready-made size system.

Vol.48 No.-

Human body had been regarded as the source of evil thereby repressed by the law in male dominated society. At the end of Modernity, however, body, along with other repressed strata such as writing, women, the colored people, and sexuality, began to be arising accompanied with the flowering intellectual movements of Deconstruction, and consecutively the Cultural Studies. Placing the human right of women, race and sexuality in equal position to the established groups, the body plays the crucial role to shift a paradigm. For instance, M. Foucault utilizes Nietzsche's concepts of not only genealogy but Dionysus, the Greek God of body (or pleasure) who is the counterpart of Apollon, a God of law. Foucault rewrites the history of sexuality of the family-oriented modern society in which homosexuality was strategically repressed as evil, while Judith Butler rereads this "materialized body" for the purpose of lesbian movement, so called "Queer." Now in the 21th century, we are revisiting the phenomenology of Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty who enlarged human body in terms of experience to the extend of things, environment, and Nature. This paper is about phenomenological body in the context of Korean poem and fictions. Chunsoo Kim depicts how body becomes a "Flower" with the name designated by a lover. Since we are born from the earth (or thing) into the world, and eventually return to the earth, we need a meaning and a purpose to live in this world. Hence, we give a name to a body and turn a thing to be the absolute Being, but the veil of language cannot hide the trace of body completely, because body is more powerful than language. There is always a surplus of name as Kim expresses it "Flower" which is still transient, yet eternal. On the other hand, the surplus of body becomes a cause of changing direction from home to the city, and vice versa in Chungjoon Lee's fictions. In his works, a narrator who proceeded to the society gets tired and sick but endures it with a fantasy of home-coming. The body or thing(bird or tree) makes the narrator turn the directions for the circulation of life by going and coming back between home and society just like the cycle of Nature.

Vol.14 No.4

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between body-image discrepancy and psychological well-being in female college students. 200 female college students were recruited. The results showed that most of female college students belonged to thin-normal range, however, 92.5% of participants assessed that thin body is ideal. As female college students internalized the standard of thin body image, body-image discrepancy was also caused. Correlation analysis showed that body-image discrepancy has negative correlation with body-esteem, and psychological well-being. Also, as previous studies BMI and body-esteem have negative correlation with psychological well-being. Especially, in this study we conducted hierarchial regression analysis to assess the unique contribution of body-image discrepancy to psychological well-being. The results of hierarchial regression analysis demonstrated that body-image discrepancy has unique contribution to psychological well-being after controlling BMI, body-esteem, and stress. In addition, according to the level of body-image discrepancy, we investigated group differences. The group of ‘discrepancy is large’ showed psychological well-being and body-esteem is low, and stress level is high compare to the group of ‘discrepancy is small’.

      • Body Type Classification of Korean Female for Designing Driver’s Seat

        Yu Shin Lee,Donggun Park,Yong Min Kim,Juhee Park,Seungwon Baek,Woojin Park,Myung Hwan Yun 대한인간공학회 2015 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2015 No.10

Objective: This study aims to investigate body type classification of Korean female according to their age for designing driver’s seat. Background: Driver’s seat has major impacts on comfortable driving, driving performance, and purchase decision. Therefore, it is important to design the seat with consideration of body type of drivers. However, there is a lack of studies for the body type of female drivers. Method: First of all, 43 dimensions, which are related to driver’s seat design, among 125 static body dimensions were selected from a sample of 2180 Korean female anthropometric data. The 43 dimensions were factorized. Lastly, clustering analysis was conducted based on three age groups of 20s, 30s and 40s, and 50s. Results: Four factors were found from the factor analysis; thickness of torso, length of torso, length of arms and legs, size of hip. Each age group showed four major body types from the cluster analysis. Conclusion: The four major body types were different across the age groups. The age group 20s had dominant body type of relatively bigger upper body compared to lower body. The dominant body type of rest two groups were a balanced type over both upper and lower bodies. Application: It can be helpful for understanding important factors of drivers’ body type on designing comfortable driver’s seat. Further it is expected to be applied on designing other products which require the understanding of characteristics of body type.

Vol.39 No.1

This study examines the body profile culture led mainly by people in their 20s and 30s in South Korea. Firstly, this study aims to investigate that the style of female body profile with body exposure involves sexual objectification which can be understood in the context of European nude painting and sculpture tradition. Secondly, it aims to reveal that sexual objectification in female body profiles is also related to the algorithm of Instagram, where body profiles are mostly posted and shared. For this purpose, female body images which have been posted on Instagram accounts of photographic agencies specialized in taking body profile photos, were analyzed with iconographical viewpoint to reveal the tendency of objectification of women in the culture. This approach presupposes that the convention of western nude paintings and sculptures that were characterized by Contrapposto and Venus Pudica, has been reflected in female body profile photos. The results of this study were as follows. Most of the women who take part in the body profile culture, monitor their bodies on a daily basis to keep their bodies in shape internalizing male gaze, control their weights, postures, facial expressions and so on and photoshop the photos of them according to ideal aesthetic standards. With these efforts, they try to show off their thin body shape, the curves from the breasts to the waist and buttocks, and some sense of shame of their body. In other respects, posting and sharing their body profiles on SNS can be seen as an attempt to acquire capital in the attention economy. It was revealed that Instagram algorithm tends to reproduce and reinforce the idea of female body as an unequal “place” by allowing more feeds with body exposure of women to be widely seen and shared. When it comes to the phenomenon, this study suggests that Instagram should make its community guidelines more effective and specific, and actively intervene and cooperate with police investigations at the platform level for sexual harassment, discrimination and so on that occur on Instagram. In addition, it is necessary to educate people about media literacy and to encourage body positivity movements etc. at the user level.

Park, Sang-Chan. 2008. A Study on the Body of Yi Sang's Poems. Dongnam Journal of Korean Language & Literature 25. This study is going to regard Yi Sang's poems as one book of body and analyze his poems in terms of body. First of all, his poems show the body of anxiety and nervousness. Born in the colonial modern days in Korea, Yi wrote some poems regarding the genealogical table in his family, which showed a great anxiety and traumatic feelings of his youth. His way of writing is not a hidden, covert one, though. Rather, it is an overt and obvious exposure of anxiety. Secondly, Yi's poems show the body of architecture and geometry. He studied architecture and had a wide knowledge of mathematics and science, too. This knowledge of science enabled him to have a renewed and creative understanding of the world. In many of his poems, one can see many poetic dictions of mathematics, physics, architecture and biology. Thirdly, Yi shows the body of disease in his poems. He often faced death through tubercular hemoptysis and he experimented the writing facing death. The body in his poems is a sick and dead body, but it is a body yearning for the return to the womb of the mother. Likewise, the aspects shown in the Yi's poems are not one-sided and simple ones but ones with various spectra.
