For the purpose of investigating the positive rate of rubella antibody and sero-conversion rate after rubella vaccination, 863 high school students of the two regions were studied from April 21st, 1996 to September 20th, 1996. The main results were as follows; 1. Positive rate of IgG in male was higher than in female, and the rate of IgM was also higher in male than in female. 2. Positive rate of IgG by blood type was similar, but positive rate of IgM was higher in AB type than the others. 3. Positive rate of IgG by vaccination was similar to all groups, but positive rate of IgM was higher in which was not vaccinated group. 4. Positive rate of IgG and IgM, having vaccination card, was less than which was not having vaccination card. 5. Those who were vaccinated acquired IgG(+) regardless of an existence of IgG antibody, and 28.3% of IgG(-), IgM(+) male who was not vaccinated became IgM(+), IgG(+) after 3months later. As a result positive rate of male was higher than female. The author conclude that vaccination is necessary to prevent from rubella for them.
Characteristics of Pseudomonas brenneri Isolated from Korean Raspberry

To find unrecorded domestic species, wild-type strains were isolated from Raspberry collected in Daeryong Mountain at Chuncheon. Among the 1,015 isolates, NIB 325 showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus and identified as Pseudomonas brenneri, which had not been domestically reported. The biochemical characteristics of the strains were examined by using an API 20NE and API ZYM KIT. API ZYM KIT results suggested that NIB 325 strain is active in esterase(C4), unlike the previously reported JNP 2044 strain. Esterase is a valuable enzyme used in amino acid synthesis, steroid conversion, and ester synthesis processes. Esterase activity of P. brenneri NIB 325 was qualitatively observed by the activity-staining method. Further study might be followed by characterization of the enzyme activity and optimization of cultivation conditions.

<P>Bisphenol A (BPA) has been reported to possess hepatic toxicity. We investigated the hypothesis that BPA, below the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL), can induce hepatic damage and mitochondrial dysfunction by increasing oxidative stress in the liver. Two doses of BPA, 0.05 and 1.2 mg/kg body weight/day, were administered intraperitoneally for 5 days to mice. Both treatments impaired the structure of the hepatic mitochondria, although oxygen consumption rate and expression of the respiratory complex decreased only at the higher dose. The hepatic levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a naturally occurring product of lipid peroxidation, increased, while the expression of glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPx3) decreased, after BPA treatment. The expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) also increased. In HepG2 cells, 10 or 100 nM of BPA also decreased the oxygen consumption rate, ATP production, and the mitochondrial membrane potential. In conclusion, doses of BPA below the NOAEL induce mitochondrial dysfunction in the liver, and this is associated with an increase in oxidative stress and inflammation.</P>

Ingredients and concentrations of organic solvents in 7 kinds of adhesive sold on the domestic market were qualitatively and quantitatively analysed. Vapor concentrations were also analysed to estimate inhalation concentratins when adhesives were abused to get high. Acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl cyclopenatane, cyclohexane and toluene were identified to be used in domstic adhesives as solvents. When organic solvents of adhesives were vaporized in the vial at the room temprature for 30 mins, concentrations of organic solvents in air were in the range of 5,000~140,000ppm. Among these solvents, toluene, known to have strong hallucination effect, showed 5,000~35,000 ppm. The putative concentration of toluene in case of glue sniffing was estimated to be about 5,000ppm in consideration of glue sniffing circumstances. Toluene was found in all adhesives in this study, even adhesives which toluene was not described in label.

KS, JIS, ASTM 및 OECD의 계면활성제 생분해 공정시험법인 진탕배양법, 반연속식활성오니법, 연속식활성오니법을 이용해 APG의 생분해성을 조사하였다. Foam loss로 측정한 APG의 일차생분해도는 모든 시험법에서 100%인 것으로 나타나, APG는 하수처리장과 표층수의 조건에서 쉽게 분해됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 OECD의 화학물질 생분해 평가법인 closed bottle test법으로 측정한 APG의 최종생분해도는 75% BOD_(28)/COD로, OECD에서 제시한 ready biodegradability limit인 60%를 초과하여, APG는 자연계에서 쉽게 분해되는 readily biodegradable한 물질인 것으로 확인되었다. The biodegradability of alkylpolyglucosides(APGs) was determined by shake culture tests, semicontinuous activated sludge test, and continuous activated sludge test mandated for testing the biodegradability of surfactants in OECD, ASTM, JIS and KS. APGs showed 100% foam loss in all tests. This means that APGs are degraded well not only in sewage treatment plant but in surface water conditions. In closed bottle test for determinating the ultimate biodegradability, APGs exceeded the ready biodegradability limit (60%) of OECD with 75% BOD_(28)/COD. APGs may therefore be considered as readily biodegradable under actual environmental conditions.
