Background: The role of induction chemotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has been suggested but poorly established in the paranasal sinus and nasal cavity (PNS-NC). Periorbital involvement is frequently observed and need of eyeball exenteration for safe margin is concerned in HNSCC of PNS-NC. We evaluated the treatment outcome of patients with induction chemotherapy focused on eyeball preservation in HNSCC of PNS-NC. Methods: Medical records were reviewed for 21 patients diagnosed with HNSCC of PNS-NC and treated with induction chemotherapy in Seoul National University Hospital from August 2005 to March 2012. Overall survival, response rate, and eyeball preservation rate were analyzed. Results: Of total 21 patients, median age was 57 years old and 15 were male. Tumors were located in paranasal sinus (N=14) and nasal cavity (N=7). Most patients had T4 stage, consists of 10 patients of T4a and 7 patients of T4b. Induction chemotherapy regimens were DFP (Docetaxel plus fiourouracil plus Cisplatin, N=11), FP (N=8), and DP (N=2). Median follow-up duration was 83.1 (range 28.8-109.1) months, and overall survival rate at 3 years was 61.5%. Thirteen patients (61.9%) had partial response by induction chemotherapy, and 15 patients (71.4%) achieved T down-staging. Among patients with T4 stage, which is high risk of orbital exenteration, 14 out of 17 patients (82.4%) eventually preserved the involved eye. Three-year overall survival rate of patients who had partial response to induction chemotherapy was 76.2% compared with 37.5% in those with stable disease or progression to induction chemotherapy. Conclusions: In this single center retrospective analysis, induction chemotherapy could be active for downstaging of T stage, and reasonable option for eyeball preservation in HNSCC of PNS-NC.

A cold forging process for hollow shaft shape was designed by using finite element method in the present study. Hollow shaft products have been widely used for auto transmission parts and other applications. Hollow shaft has been usually fabricated with gun drill machining to lower the weight of final product. However, more cost efficient ways to manufacture hollow type product has been sought since conventional machining usually costs quite much. There have been several ways to make hollow type forgings such as rotary swaging and rotary forging, which cost a lot of initial machine cost. In the present study, a conventional cold forging process was designed to make hollow shaft product using several step forgings.

Compaction grouting is a remediation method of m-situ soil densification by grout injection under pressure for diffential settlements and tilted structures. Recently in Korea, there are major construction projects such as rapid transit, subway, airport, bridge and new city construction. But, inevitably there are many cases constructed in bad ground condition like a soft ground and inhomogeneous soil layer. We have many problems which are differential settlements and negative effect of near structure in such cases. This paper describes compaction grouting technique for lifting structures suffered differential settlement.

Background: Phototrichogram analysis of normal scalp hair characteristics in Asian populations is not well characterized. Objectives: To investigate the normal hair characteristics of South Koreans using a phototrichogram. Methods: We enrolled 674 males and 683 females between the ages of 10 and 69. Hair density, thickness and the white hair percentage were measured via phototrichogram. Six scalp sites, including front, top, the peak between top and back, back, and the right and left sides were targeted. Results: The mean hair density, hair thickness, and the white hair percentage were not significantly different between genders at any scalp site. The mean hair density and thickness were significantly different according to scalp sites. Hair density declined with age, especially at the peak between top and back. Males and females showed different patterns of aging in hair density. Hair thickness changed little with age. But, mean hair thickness generally tended to increase until the 20s, reach a plateau between the 20s and 50s, and decrease after the 50s. The mean white hair percentages were 1.84 ± 4.24% in males and 1.66 ± 4.21% in females. The mean white hair percentages were significantly increased in subjects greater than 40 years of age. Conclusion: We described the normal characteristics and aging patterns of scalp hair in a Korean population.
