      • <i>CYP2A6</i> and <i>ERCC1</i> polymorphisms correlate with efficacy of S-1 plus cisplatin in metastatic gastric cancer patients

        <P><B>Background:</B></P><P>We evaluated the association between polymorphisms of cytochrome P450 2A6 (<I>CYP2A6</I>)/excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (<I>ERCC1</I>)/X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1(<I>XRCC1</I>) and treatment outcomes of metastatic gastric cancer (MGC) patients treated with S-1/cisplatin.</P><P><B>Methods:</B></P><P>Among MGC patients (<I>n</I>=108), who received S-1 (40 mg m<SUP>−2</SUP> b.i.d., days 1–14) and cisplatin (60 mg m<SUP>−2</SUP>, day 1) every 3 weeks, we analysed the wild-type allele (<I>W</I>) and variants (<I>V</I>) of <I>CYP2A6</I> (<I>*4</I>, <I>*7, *9, *10</I>), and the polymorphisms of <I>ERCC1</I> (rs11615, rs3212986) and <I>XRCC1</I> (rs25487).</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>Patients having fewer <I>CYP2A6</I> variants had better response rates (<I>W</I>/<I>W vs W</I>/<I>V</I> other than <I>*1/*4 vs V</I>/<I>V</I> or <I>*1/*4</I>=66.7 <I>vs</I> 58.3 <I>vs</I> 32.3% <I>P</I>=0.008), time to progression (TTP) (7.2 <I>vs</I> 6.1 <I>vs</I> 3.5 months, <I>P</I>=0.021), and overall survival (23.2 <I>vs</I> 15.4 <I>vs</I> 12.0 months, <I>P</I>=0.004). <I>ERCC1 19442C</I>><I>A</I> (rs3212986) was also associated with response rate (<I>C/C</I>, 46.7% <I>vs C/A</I>, 55.3% <I>vs A/A</I>, 87.5%) (<I>P</I>=0.048) and TTP (4.4 <I>vs</I> 7.6 <I>vs</I> 7.9 months) (<I>P</I>=0.012). Patients carrying both risk genotypes of <I>CYP2A6</I> (<I>V</I>/<I>V</I> or <I>1/*4</I>) and <I>ERCC1 19442C</I>><I>A</I> (<I>C/C</I>) <I>vs</I> those carrying none showed an adjusted odds ratio of 0.113 (<I>P</I>=0.004) for response, and adjusted hazard ratios of 3.748 (<I>P</I>=0.0001) for TTP and 2.961 (<I>P</I>=0.006) for death.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>Polymorphisms of <I>CYP2A6</I> and <I>ERCC1 19442C</I>><I>A</I> correlated with the efficacy of S-1/cisplatin.</P>

        Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis spores in Korean rice: Prevalence and toxin production as affected by production area and degree of milling

        We determined the prevalence of and toxin production by Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis in Korean rice as affected by production area and degree of milling. Rough rice was collected from 64 farms in 22 agricultural areas and polished to produce brown and white rice. In total, rice samples were broadly contaminated with B. cereus spores, with no effect of production area. The prevalence and counts of B. cereus spores declined as milling progressed. Frequencies of hemolysin BL (HBL) production by isolates were significantly (P @? 0.01) reduced as milling progressed. This pattern corresponded with the presence of genes encoding the diarrheal enterotoxins. The frequency of B. cereus isolates positive for hblC, hblD, or nheB genes decreased as milling progressed. Because most B. cereus isolates from rice samples contained six enterotoxin genes, we concluded that B. cereus in rice produced in Korea is predominantly of the diarrheagenic type. The prevalence of B. thuringiensis in rice was significantly lower than that of B. cereus and not correlated with production area. All B. thuringiensis isolates were of the diarrheagenic type. This study provides information useful for predicting safety risks associated with B. cereus and B. thuringiensis in rough and processed Korean rice.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the aspect and degree of female university students' menstruation discomfort and to study how the menstruation discomfort affects their quality of life The subjects consisted of 315 female university students in Seoul City by convenience sampling from July 22 to August 3, 2010. The data was collected by structured questionnaire that included general characteristics, Menstrual Distress Questionnaire and Smith Kline Beecham 'Quality of Life' Scale. To analyze the data, used the following methods: frequency, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients with the SPSS program 15.0. The Results as follows: The participants indicated water accumulation, the ache, negative emotion, conduct change and attention intensive obstacle order to show the women's menstrual discomforts and the quality of life was high competent feeling, body and mental stability, vitality and stability order. The correlation of the women's menstrual discomforts and the quality of life was r=-.605 and p=.000, the women's menstrual discomforts and the quality of life show considerably negative correlation. In the event that the women's menstrual discomforts was high comes to be low appeared the quality of life. As a result, this study showed that the women's menstrual discomforts and the quality of life have negative correlation, and discovered various factors which effect to the menstrual discomforts and the quality of life for the women's college students. Thus in the future, do a research for the middle school girls, the maiden and married women, and the repetition research of the women's college student is necessary. The nursing arbitration program development for relaxation of the women's menstrual discomforts is necessary as well.

        The inability of Bacillus licheniformis perR mutant to grow is mainly due to the lack of PerR-mediated fur repression

        <P>PerR, a member of Fur family protein, is a metal-dependent H2O2 sensing transcription factor that regulates genes involved in peroxide stress response. Industrially important bacterium Bacillus licheniformis contains three PerR-like proteins (PerR(BL), PerR2, and PerR3) compared to its close relative Bacillus subtilis. Interestingly, unlike other bacteria including B. subtilis, no authentic perR (BL) null mutant could be established for B. licheniformis. Thus, we constructed a conditional perR (BL) mutant using a xylose-inducible promoter, and investigated the genes under the control of PerR(BL). PerR(BL) regulon genes include katA, mrgA, ahpC, pfeT, hemA, fur, and perR as observed for PerR(BS). However, there is some variation in the expression levels of fur and hemA genes between B. subtilis and B. licheniformis in the derepressed state. Furthermore, katA, mrgA, and ahpC are strongly induced, whereas the others are only weakly or not induced by H2O2 treatment. In contrast to the B. subtilis perR null mutant which frequently gives rise to large colony phenotype mainly due to the loss of katA, the suppressors of B. licheniformis perR mutant, which can form colonies on LB agar, were all catalase-positive. Instead, many of the suppressors showed increased levels of siderophore production, suggesting that the suppressor mutation is linked to the fur gene. Consistent with this, perR fur double mutant could grow on LB agar without Fe supplementation, whereas perR katA double mutant could only grow on LB agar with Fe supplementation. Taken together, our data suggest that in B. licheniformis, despite the similarity in PerR(BL) and PerR(BS) regulon genes, perR is an essential gene required for growth and that the inability of perR null mutant to grow is mainly due to elevated expression of Fur.</P>

        Pb(Zr,Ti)O<sub>3</sub>-Pb(Mn<sub>1/3</sub>Nb<sub>2/3</sub>)O<sub>3</sub> piezoelectric thick films by aerosol deposition

        <P>Piezoelectric thick films of Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3-Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PZT-PMnN) with Zr:Ti ratios ranging from 0.45:0.55 to 0.60:0.40 were fabricated on a platinized silicon wafer by aerosol deposition (AD). All the films were deposited with a thickness of 10 mu m with high density. By adding PMnN to 57:43 PZT, a dielectric constant as low as similar to 660 was achieved while the effective piezoelectric constant was over 140 pC/N. PZT-PMnN with a Zr:Ti ratio of 57:43 thus showed a maximum piezoelectric voltage constant (g(33)) of 23.8 x 10(-3) Vm/N and is a good candidate for high quality thick films for application to high-energy density or high sensitivity, piezoelectric energy harvesters and sensors.         Area-selective chemical vapor deposition of Co for Cu capping layer

        <P>Selective chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of Co on Cu interconnect lines is an advantageous method because it can simplify unit process and suppress side effects resulting from the metal etching process. Density functional theory calculations show that CoCp(CO)(2) has a relatively higher kinetic barrier (36.2 kcal/mol) on SiO2 than that of Co-2(CO)(8) (22.9 kcal/mol). This indicates that CoCp(CO)(2) could be a promising candidate as a Co precursor for selective CVD. Selective CVD of Co films is demonstrated experimentally by deposition on SiO2 and Cu substrates at 200 and 300 degrees C. To reduce C contents in the deposited film, a NH3 plasma process is adopted into conventional CVD in a cyclic CVD process.         Effect of Crystallization Treatment on the Magnetic Properties of Amorphous Strips Based on Co-Fe-Ni-B-Si-Cr Containing Nitrogen

        Co-Fe-Ni-B-Si-Cr based amorphous strips containing nitrogen were manufactured via melt spinning, and then devitrified by crystallization treatment at the various annealing temperatures of $300^{\circ}C{\sim}540^{\circ}C$ for up to 30 minutes in an inert gas $(N_2)$ atmosphere. The microstructures were examined by using XRD and TEM and the magnetic properties were measured by using VSM and B-H meter. Among the alloys, the amorphous ribbons of $Co_{72.6}Fe_{9.8}Ni_{5.5}B_{2.4}Si_{7.1}Cr_{2.6}$ containing 121 ppm of nitrogen showed relatively high saturation magnetization. The alloy ribbons crystallized at $540^{\circ}C$ showed that the grain size of $Co_{72.6}Fe_{9.8}Ni_{5.5}B_{2.4}Si_{7.1}Cr_{2.6}$ alloy containing 121 ppm of nitrogen was about f nm, which exhibited paramagnetic behavior. The formation of nano-grain structure was attributed to the finely dispersed Fe4N particles and the solid-solutionized nitrogen atoms in the matrix. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the nano-grain structure of 5nm in size could reduce the core loss within the normally applied magnetic field of 300A/m at 10kHz.

        A new acetophenone glycoside from the flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum (cloves)

        <P>A new acetophenone, 2,4,6-trihydroxy-3-methylacetophenone-2-O-beta-D-glucoside (1), together with 21 known compounds; one acetophenone (2), four chromone glycosides (3-6), six phenylpropanoids (7-12), six sesquiterpenoids (13-18), two triterpenoids (19 and 20), one sterol (21), and one tannin (22) were isolated from the flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum (cloves). The structure of the new compound 1 was determined by spectroscopic analyses including 1D-, 2D-NMR and HRMS interpretation. Among the isolates, one acetophenone (2), three phenylpropanoids (10 - 12), and one sesquiterpenoid (13) were isolated from the flower buds of S. aromaticum for the first time in this study. All the isolates (1 - 22) were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against human ovarian cancer cells (A2780) using MU assays.         DRUM impactor를 이용한 대기 입자상 물질 중 원소성분의 입경분포 특성 : 제주도 고산지역의 2002년 봄철(3.29 ~ 5.30) 측정 연구 Measurements in Springtime 2002

        Size-segregated measurements of aerosol composition using X-stage DRUM impactor are used to determine the transport of natural and anthropogenic aerosols at Gosan site from 29 March to 30 May in 2002. Separation of ambient aerosols by DRUM impactor offers many advantages over other standard filtration techniques. Some of the most important advantages are the ability to segregate into details by particle size, to better preserve chemical integrity since the air stream doesn't pass through the deposit, to collect samples as a function of time, and to have a wide variety of impaction surfaces available to match analytical needs. Although the transport of Yellow sand is a well-known phenomenon in springtime, the result of measurement shows that not only soil dust but also anthropogenic aerosols, including sulfur, enriched trace metals such as Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cr, As, Se, Hr, are transported to Gosan in springtime. This study combines the size- and time- resolved aerosol composition measurements with isentropic, backward air-mass trajectories in order to identify some potential source regions of anthropogenic aerosols. As a result, during the NYS period, the average concentration of PM_(10) was 46 ㎍/㎥. Si, Al, S, Fe, Cl, K, Ca were higher than 1,000 ㎍/㎥ and Ti was about 100 ㎍/㎥. The concentrations of Zn, Mn, Cu, Pb, Br, Rb, V, Cr, Ni, As, Se ranged between 1 and 70 ㎍/㎥. More than 50% of typical soil elements, such as Al, Si, Fe, Ca, Ti, Cr, Cu, Br, were distributed in a coarse particle range (5.0 ∼ 12μm). In other hand, anthropogenic pollutants, such as S, N, Vi, were mainly distributed in a fine particle range (0.09 ∼ 0.56μm). During the YS period, PM_(10) increased about 8 times than NYS period, and main soil elements, such as Al, Si, S, K, V, Mn, Fe also doubled in coarse particle range (1.15 ∼ 12μm). But Zn, As, Pb, Cu and Se, which distributed in the fine aerosols (0.09 ∼0.56μm), were on the same level with or decreased than NYS period. Finally, except the YS period, coarse particles (2.5 ∼ 12μm) arc inferred to be influenced by soil, coal combustion, waste incineration, ferrous and nonferrous sources through similar pathways with Yellow Sand. But line particles have different sources, such as coal combustion, gasoline vehicle, biomass burning, oil or coal combustion, nonferrous and ferrous metal sources, which are transported from China, Korea peninsula and local sources.

        Size-segregated measurements of aerosol composition are used to estimate the transport of natural and anthropogenic aerosols at Gosan site during May 2002. The results of measurement show that not only soil dust but also anthropogenic aerosols, including sulfur and enriched trace metals such as Pb, Zn, Cu, are transported to Gosan. This study combines the size- and time-resolved aerosol composition measurements with factor analysis in order to identify some source materials. As a result, coarse particles (2.5 ㎛~12㎛) are influenced by soil, sea-salt, coal, coal combustion, and nonferrous sources. But fine particles have different sources. The fine particles, which the diameter is from 0.56㎛ to 2.5㎛, are more affected by road dust, oil combustion, industry. municipal incineration, and ferrous metal sources. The very fine particles, from 0.09㎛ to 0.56㎛, mainly supplied by biomass burning, oil combustion, nonferrous and ferrous metal sources.
