The 1.06㎛ Neodymium-YAG Laser(800 micron hemisherical) is revealed a useful tool for percutaneous laser disc decompression(PLDD). Especially PLDD would be applied to the management of lumbar disc herniation with minimal intervention. Total irradiated energy to one level of disc space was bout 1000 to 2000 joules. We performed this method at 10 levels, in 7 cases of patients, consisting of 4 males and 3 females with an average age of 37.7 years. Five cases showed excellent and good results, were observed. In two cases, open surgery was required because of unsatisfactory results. The best results were obtained in the protrusion type of disc herniation. We have summarized some advantages of PLDD: a) safe and simple procedure in an outpatient setting, b) avoiding general anesthesia, late spinal instability, c) possibility of repetitive use.

Three compartment stool tank system was established in March, 1965 to each of the houses . of Yongheungri, Cheju-do. The trend of parasites prevalence, faithfulness of the people to paractice the system and effectiveness of the system for destruction of ascaris eggs were examined. 1. Only 22 houses among 65 utilized the system for 3 years. The remained 43, gave up to practice; 10 because of the destruction of the cemented tank and 33 due to the shortage of. food stuffs, for hogs. In this island, the people have been raised hogs with human excrets. 2. The prevalence of ascaris infection in the village and in Sinwom-ri, a control village where the human feces were used as food stuffs for hog, were as follows: Yongheung(%) Sinwom(%) March 1965 before medication 52.0 43.0 Dec. 1965 after medication 15.1 21.2 Feb. 1968 22.7 30.8 3. Ascaris eggs in the 3rd compartment, were destroyed 94-100%, whereas the eggs in semi-formed feces in hog sty survived 94%.

Satellite data analysis of the China Coastal Waters in the Seas surrounding Jeju Island, Korea

China Coastal Water (CCW) usually appears in the seas surrounding Jeju Island annually (June-October) and is very pronounced in August. The power spectrum density (PSD), sea level anomalies (SLAs), and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were found to peak annually and semiannually. The peaks at intervals of 80-, 60-, and 43-days are considered to be influenced by CCW and the Kuroshio Current. Generally, low-salinity water appears to the west of Jeju Island from June through October and gradually propagates to the east, where CCW meets the Tsushima Current. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of SLAs and SSTs indicated that the variance in SLAs and SSTs was 55.70 and 98.09% in the first mode, respectively. The PSD for the first mode of EOF analysis of SLAs was stronger in the western than in the eastern waters because of the influence of CCW. The PSD for the EOF analysis of SSTs was similar in all areas (the Yangtze Estuary and the waters to the west and east of Jeju Island), with a period of approximately 260 days.

<B>BACKGROUND.</B><P>The authors investigated whether ABCB1, ABCC2, and ABCG2 genetic polymorphisms affect pharmacokinetics (PK) of irinotecan and treatment outcome of patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC).</P><B>METHODS.</B><P>Blood samples from 107 NSCLC patients treated with irinotecan and cisplatin chemotherapy were used for genotyping ABCB1 (1236C > T, 2677G > T/A, 3435C > T), ABCC2 (−24C > T, 1249G > A, 3972C > T), and ABCG2 (34G > A, 421C > A) polymorphisms. Genotypes were correlated with irinotecan-PK, toxicity, tumor response, and survival.</P><B>RESULTS.</B><P>Among 8 polymorphisms, 3435TT and 2677TT were associated with AUC<SUB>SN-38G</SUB> and CL<SUB>SN-38G</SUB>. When haplotypes are assigned, 2677TT/3435TT carriers showed significantly lower AUC<SUB>SN-38G</SUB> (P = .006), whereas 2677GG/3435CC carriers showed significantly higher AUC<SUB>SN-38</SUB> (P = .039). These findings suggest that 2677TT and 3435TT variants are associated with higher efflux activity. In toxicity, the 2677G/T or A was associated with grade 4 neutropenia. The 2677GG carriers showed significantly lower absolute neutrophil count during the 1<SUP>st</SUP> cycle (P = .012) as well as entire course of chemotherapy (P = .042). The 3435TT was associated with higher frequency of grade 3 diarrhea (P = .047). In tumor response, ABCC2 −24TT and 3972TT genotypes were associated with higher response rates (P = .031 and .046, respectively) and longer progression-free survival (P = .035 and .038, respectively), which was sustained in haplotype analysis.</P><B>CONCLUSIONS.</B><P>Specific polymorphisms of ABCB1 and ABCC2 can influence disposition and tumor response to irinotecan by regulating transporter activity. These findings may help to individualize irinotecan-based chemotherapy in patients with advanced NSCLC. Cancer 2007. © 2007 American Cancer Society.</P>
