수도권 매립지에서의 매립가스 발생량 평가를 위해 국내에 적용되었었던 몇 개의 모델을 사용한 결과 SCS model과 국가 온실가스 배출량 조사에 사용되었던 모델이 실제 포집하여 사용했던 양과 비교하였을 때 가장 유사한 결과를 나타내었다. 수도권 매립지의 경우 플라스틱, 합성고무 등 유기성 폐기물이 상당수 존재하기 때문에 예상했던 것 보다 매립가스의 생성속도가 느린 것으로 나타났다. 또한 매립지의 활용방안에 있어서도 기존의 매립장 포화 후 후속 매립장의 운영하는 방안보다, 단계적으로 매립장을 병행 운영하는 방안을 통해 매립가스의 원활한 수습과 매립지의 수명연장에 있어 보다 효율적인 것으로 나타났다.

Background/Aims: Small bowel transit time (orocecal transit time) is an important parameter of intestinal function. The lactulose hydrogen breath test is a relatively simple, sensitive and noninvasive method for measuring orocecal transit time. The small bowel transit time is known to be influenced by many factors such as psychological stress and menstrual cycle. However, it is not obvious how resection or diseases of the stomach and colon affect on small bowel transit time. We compared orocecal transit time of patients with ulcerative colitis and who had received gastrectomy with that of healthy controls. Methods: We investigated orocecal transit time of 18 healthy persons, 12 patients who had received gastrectomy, 11 patients with active ulcerative colitis and 14 patients with inactive ulcerative colitis. After overnight fasting, lactulose 13 g with water 100 cc was ingested. Then, end-expiratory gas was collected every 15 minutes for 4 hours, The amount of hydrogen in the collected gas samples was measured by Trace Gas Analyzer (Quintron^(R)), Results: For normal Korean adults, the mean of orocecal transit time was 95±18.5 minutes (range: 60-135). The orocecal transit time in patients who had received gastrectomy and patients with ulcerative colitis is longer than that of healthy controls (p$lt;0.01). No statistical difference was found between patients with active and inactive ulcerative colitis. However, the orocecal transit time in active stage patients was prolonged by 35 minutes. Conclusions: The lactulose hydrogen breath test is a valuable rnethod to assess orocecal transit time in patients with variable gastrointestinal diseases. The underlying mechanism for these results are unclear, but it is suggested that some regulating factors of gastrointestinal motility are changed due to gastrectomy and inflammation of the colon. Further investigation is needed to elucidate the mechanism of the change of orocecal transit time.

A 68-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with obstructive jaundice. Abdominal CT scan demonstrated a mass at the head of the pancreas. The patient was diagnosed as having obstructive jaundice caused by pancreatic cancer. We tried to relieve the bile duct obstruction by ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography). After several cannulation attempts, we thought that we had achieved deep cannulation of the bile duct and tried to place a biliary plastic stent. During ERCP, however, we noticed massive air in the portal venous system, indicating possible cannulation of the portal vein. The procedure was terminated immedi-ately and abdominal computed tomography revealed air in the portal venous system. Fortunately, there were no subsequent complications. The air in the portal vein had disappeared, ascertained by CT scan taken 5 days later. The patient underwent surgical resection for pancreatic cancer. Isolated portal vein cannulation per se does not usually result in mortality or serious morbidity. (Korean J Med 2014;86:462-465)

<P>The genetic effects of FLT3 polymorphisms on BMD and fracture risk in postmenopausal women were studied. We found that FLT3+13348C>T polymorphism and haplotype 2 were significantly associated with low BMD and high risk of fracture. Introduction: FMS-related tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) has been shown to play a critical role in the development of myelolymphoid progenitors and in the development of osteoclasts, but any possible genetic effect of FLT3 on bone metabolism has not been studied. Materials and Methods: To study a possible genetic effect of FLT3, we directly sequenced the FLT3 gene in 24 Korean individuals and identified 23 sequence variants. Seven polymorphisms were selected and genotyped in Korean postmenopausal women (n = 946). Results: We found that FLT3+13348C>T was associated with low BMD at the lumbar spine (p = 0.04) and femoral neck (p = 0.04). Haplotype analysis revealed that FLT3-ht2 (TTCTT) containing the rare allele in the +13348 position also showed significant association with low BMD in the lumbar spine (p = 0.04) and femoral neck (p = 0.05). Consistent with these results, the FLT3+13348C>T polymorphism and FLT3-ht2 were also significantly associated with high risk of fracture in the vertebrae (OR = 1.44-1.58; p = 0.03-0.04 and OR = 1.45-1.59; p = 0.02-0.03, respectively) and in any sites (OR = 1.34-1.81; p = 0.02-0.03 and OR = 1.34-1.81; p = 0.02-0.03, respectively). Conclusions: These results suggest that FLT3 polymorphisms play a role in determination of BMD and subsequent fractures in postmenopausal women.</P>

<P>In this paper, nano-sized Al2O3 powders are synthesized by a thermal MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) combined with plasma. The effect of reaction temperature on the characteristics of the synthesized Al2O3 powders is investigated. The experimental results demonstrate that while the temperature is increased from 200oC to 1000oC, the mean diameter of Al2O3 powders reaches from 400nm to 10nm. Hence, the increment of temperature can promote the synthesis of fine Al2O3 particle. Furthermore, the powder morphologies and crystallite size are also examined by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and XRD. Based on TEM observation, it is found that the particles are sphere shape. The XRD analysis shows that the particles are typical γ-Al2O3 crystalline phase over 400oC. Lastly, the effect of plasma on the characteristic of Al2O3 synthesized by thermal MOCVD is also considered.</P>
