Linear Accelerator를 이용한 Stereotactic Radiosurgery

A Modified irradiation technique utilizing a linear accelerator for radiation surgery within the brain was performed in 4 patients. Three of them had brain tumors and one small arteriovenous malformation in midbrain. A Hitchcock stereotactic apparatus and a 10 MeV linear accelerator have been adapted and special computer programs for dosimetry were obtained and studied experimentally with a phantom model. Stereotactic radiosurgery is a valuable tool in the treatment of inoperable, deep seated intracranial lesions, the major advantage being high efficacy and smoothness of the procedure, as well as short hospitalization times.

Recent experimental studies and clinical cases have suggested that grafting tissue from the adrenal medulla into the brain may alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Autologous adrenal medullary grafts into the striatum was performed stereotactically in two patients with Parkinson's disease. Both patients were bedridden preoperatively, but 4 months after the surgery both became ambulatory and one was even capable of returning to his job. Even though the number of cases was small⑵ and the follow-up period was short, this study shows that adrenal medullary transplantation into the striatum may have some beneficial effects in patient with Parkinson's disease. Further experimental and clinical trials are necessary to see whether this procedure will be a recommendable surgical treatment for patients suffering from Parkinson's disease.
Rapid recovery of tissue hypoxia by cotransplantation of endothelial cells

Disruption of blood vessels caused by a spinal cord injury leads to tissue hypoxia. This hypoxic condition reduces the survival of transplanted stem cells, consequentially decreasing the effectiveness of stem cell therapy. In this study, we investigated the correlation between angiogenesis and the survival of transplanted neural stem cells in a spinal cord injury model. Hypoxia-specific luciferase-expressing neural stem cells (EpoSV-Luc NSC) were used as a tool for the detection of hypoxia caused by a spinal cord injury. In vivo, angiogenesis by cotransplantation of endothelial cells quickly recovered tissue hypoxia caused by a spinal cord injury. As a result, cotransplantation of endothelial cells improved the survival of neural stem cells transplanted into the injured spinal cord.
Photoluminescence properties of SrLaMgTaO<sub>6</sub> double-perovskite thin film

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We deposited epitaxial and polycrystalline SrLaMgTaO<SUB>6</SUB> (SLMTO) thin films on SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> (001) and MgO (001) substrates, respectively, using pulsed laser deposition, and investigated the dependence of the structural and photoluminescence (PL) properties on the substrate. The X-ray diffraction patterns were examined to determine the growth behaviors of the SLMTO films on the SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> (001) and MgO (001) substrates. Under the same deposition conditions, the SLMTO films deposited on the SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> (001) substrate were aligned out of the substrate plane, whereas those on the MgO substrate exhibited polycrystalline growth. The PL spectra revealed that the SLMTO films exhibited significantly different visible light emissions. Further, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated differences in the chemical binding states of the TaO and MgO bonds on the surfaces of the thin film samples; these states play an important role in the visible light emission.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The epitaxial SrLaMgTaO<SUB>6</SUB> (SLMTO) thin films were grown for the first time. </LI> <LI> The PL properties in polycrystalline and epitaxial SLMTO films are different. </LI> <LI> Defects in TaO and MgO bonds are closely related to PL properties. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Robotic Resection of Huge Presacral Tumors: Case Series and Comparison With an Open Resection

STUDY DESIGN:: Clinical case series and analysis. OBJECTIVE:: The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of robotic presacral tumor resection compared with conventional open approach. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA:: Conventional open approach for huge presacral tumors in the retroperitoneal space often demands excessive hospitalization and poor cosmesis. Furthermore, narrow surgical field sometimes interrupt delicate procedures. METHODS:: Nine patients with huge (diameter >10 cm) presacral tumors underwent surgery. Five patients among them had robotic procedure and the others had open transperitoneal tumor resection. Operation time, blood loss, hospitalization, and complications were analyzed. RESULTS:: Robotic presacral tumor resection showed shorter operation time, less bleeding, and shorter hospitalization. Moreover, there was no complication related to abdominal adhesion. CONCLUSIONS:: Although robotic resection for presacral tumor still has limitations technically and economically, robotic resection for huge presacral tumors demonstrated advantages over open resection specifically for benign neurogenic tumors.
Lectotypification of the names Scrophularia alata and S. kakudensis (Scrophulariaceae)

According to Article 9.3 of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Shenzhen Code), a lectotype may be selected as the nomenclatural type from the original material, if the name was published without a holotype. While reviewing the genus Scrophularia collected in Northeast Asia, we found that two species, S. alata A. Gray and S. kakudensis Franch., were still untypified. S. alata has three specimens considered as syntypes in two herbaria, Harvard University and the Smithsonian Institution. For S. kakudensis, two specimens considered as syntypes at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris were classified as normal specimens, not type specimens. Therefore, two species of Scrophularia L. namely, S. alata A. Gray and S. kakudensis Franch., are lectotypified. The lectotypes are kept in the Harvard University and the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, respectively. Furthermore, some nomenclatural issues related to these names are discussed, and the photographs of the selected lectotypes are provided.

This paper is to investigate adoptability of the genetic algorithm to the railway traffic conflict resolution problem. We categorize the problem in two cases, one is the specific-boundary case and the other is not. GA is may be used in the first case, but not for second case. For a sample problem, an GA is designed, and the GA is being compared with Ho"s[2,3].
